Campgrounds near West Chatham, Massachusetts
West Chatham sits at the elbow of Cape Cod, and most RV camping in the area is clustered a short drive north and west of town, in Brewster, Dennis, and East Falmouth. The closest major public campground is Nickerson State Park in Brewster, which offers wooded trails, ponds, and hundreds of campsites in pine and oak forest. Private options fill in around it, and together they give renters a range of choices from state-park loops to full-hookup resorts.
Brewster anchors the local campground map. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort spreads wooded sites across acreage with frontage on Snow's Pond, and Shady Knoll Campground sits one mile from Cape Cod Bay and half a mile from the Cape Cod Rail Trail, with hookup and no-hookup sites, cable TV at most sites, restrooms, showers, Wi-Fi, and a playground.
Further west, Sun Retreats Cape Cod covers acreage in East Falmouth with RV and tent sites and vacation rentals, while Old Chatham Road RV Campground has wooded sites in South Dennis, within a short drive of both the Atlantic and Cape Cod Bay.
Things to do near West Chatham
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is the backbone of outdoor activity in this stretch of the Cape. A paved bike path from Nickerson State Park connects to the roughly 26-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, which passes through several Cape towns, making it easy to ride from a campsite to a village center or a beach. Chatham itself offers a working fishing pier, the Chatham Light, and beaches on both the Atlantic and Nantucket Sound sides.
Freshwater swimming and paddling are common on-site perks. Nickerson State Park contains eight freshwater ponds with trout and other species, hiking trails, and non-motorized boating. Families based at private parks also get pools, playgrounds, and camp stores, and Cape Cod National Seashore beaches are within day-trip range to the north.
Day trips to Provincetown, Hyannis, and the Woods Hole ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are all doable from a West Chatham base.

Most Cape Cod campgrounds run a defined seasonal calendar rather than year-round operations. Shady Knoll is seasonal and closed from October 11 to May 15, while Sweetwater Forest, Sun Retreats Cape Cod, and Old Chatham Road RV Campground operate on similar spring-to-fall schedules. Nickerson State Park's camping season generally runs from spring through mid-fall.
Summer is peak season and books earliest. Reservations for Nickerson campsites are often necessary due to the park's popularity, especially during the summer months, and private full-hookup and waterfront sites at Brewster parks fill quickly during peak weeks.
Shoulder seasons trade warm ocean swimming for quieter loops and easier bookings. Late May and September to early October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and open sites, though some amenities such as pools and camp stores may run reduced hours as parks approach their closing dates. Fall is also the wettest stretch of the year on the outer Cape, with October averaging the most rainfall.
How to book campgrounds near West Chatham
Nickerson State Park uses the Massachusetts DCR reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months prior to the arrival date, and walk-in registrations are not permitted, though advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on date of arrival. Out-of-state campers incur a per-night surcharge that funds long-term preservation and maintenance of Nickerson State Park.
Private parks book directly. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort, Shady Knoll Campground, Sun Retreats Cape Cod, and Old Chatham Road RV Campground each accept reservations through their own websites or by phone.
For summer weekends and holidays, reserve several months out. Full-hookup and pond-view sites at the private Brewster parks are the first to sell out, and watching for cancellations is often the most reliable way in when a preferred site is full.
What to expect on-site
Sites in this area tend to sit under pine and oak canopy on sandy Cape Cod soil. Nickerson's campsites are set in pine and oak forests that slope down toward the banks of freshwater ponds, and private parks nearby share the same wooded character. Site sizes vary widely, so RV renters should confirm length limits before booking: Shady Knoll accommodates tents, pop-ups, and RVs up to 38 feet, and private parks in the area generally list per-site length limits on their reservation pages.
Hookups differ by park. State-park loops at Nickerson are non-hookup, though a dump station is available, while private resorts typically offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer at most sites.
Cell signal can be inconsistent under tree cover, and beach parking in Chatham and Brewster fills early on summer days, so plan to leave the campground before mid-morning.
