Campgrounds and RV parks near West Yarmouth, MA

Beach days drive most itineraries. Nantucket Sound beaches along the West Yarmouth and Dennis shoreline have warmer, calmer water than the outer Cape's Atlantic side, which suits families with younger kids. Most town beaches charge daily parking during peak season, so arriving early or biking in helps. Biking is the other headline activity. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs 26 miles and connects to an eight-mile bike path inside Nickerson State Park. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort and Shady Knoll Campground put riders within easy reach of the trail. Other options include ferry trips to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard from Hyannis, freshwater swimming and trout fishing in Nickerson's ponds, which are stocked year-round, and the shops and restaurants along Route 28 and in Hyannis.

Most Cape Cod campgrounds operate seasonally from April through October and close for winter. DCR reservations run for campgrounds beginning in April and running through October, and private parks in the area follow a similar window. Winter RV camping options on the Cape are effectively nil. July and August are peak season. Sites fill fast, traffic on Route 6 and Route 28 backs up on Friday and Sunday afternoons, and beach parking lots reach capacity by mid-morning. Late June and the first two weeks of September are the sweet spot for RV renters: warm water, open campgrounds, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Spring is cool and often wet, with ocean temperatures still cold into May. Fall brings mild days into October, though nights turn sharp. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through early September, and Cape Cod's south-facing shoreline is exposed to storm surge when systems track up the coast.

Expect wooded, sandy-soil sites rather than open desert-style RV pads. Private Cape Cod campgrounds range from full-hookup resort layouts with pools and activities to quieter, no-frills wooded parks. Nickerson State Park has spacious sites but limited electric hookups at standard sites, so plan for battery, generator windows, or a shorter stay if boondocking isn't your setup. Pets are permitted at most DCR campgrounds with a limit of four per site, a rabies certificate is required at check-in, pets must be leashed at all times, and they are not allowed in state buildings, yurts, or cabins. Roads in the mid-Cape are narrow with low tree canopies in places, and towns like Chatham and Provincetown have tight village centers. Larger Class A rigs should plan routes and avoid summer Friday and Sunday travel on Route 6 whenever possible.
