Campgrounds and RV parks near Allegan, MI

The Allegan State Game Area anchors most outdoor plans, with hiking trails, birding, and fishing spread across tens of thousands of forested acres. Spring and fall bring migrations of waterfowl and warblers through the area, and an equestrian trail system inside the game area supports horseback riding and day-use riding from Ely Lake. On the water, Ely Lake has a swimming beach and a no-motor rule, so paddlers bring canoes or rowboats. Lake Allegan and the Kalamazoo River carry most of the fishing and paddling traffic closer to town. Families staying at Sandy Pines RV Resort and Campground often stay on-property much of the time: the resort features a 262-acre lake, sandy beach, indoor and outdoor pools, mini golf, a playground, and a chapel. Saugatuck and the Lake Michigan beaches sit within a short drive to the west.

The core RV season around Allegan runs from late spring through mid-fall. Private resorts follow that window closely: Sandy Pines RV Resort and Campground opens in spring and closes in October, and other family parks in the area operate on similar schedules. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book heaviest, especially at family-focused resorts, and holiday weekends often sell out weeks in advance. Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler weather. Late spring brings warbler and waterfowl migration through the state game area, while October delivers hardwood color across the forest but is also the wettest month of the year on average. Nights turn cold quickly after mid-October, and many private parks close for winter. Winter camping remains possible on the public side. Ely Lake Campground within the Allegan State Game Area is open year-round and offers fall and winter camping, though sites are primitive and access depends on plowing and snow cover. Hunters use the game area heavily in November, so campers should check seasonal dates before booking.

The camping experience shifts noticeably between public and private sites. Ely Lake Campground offers a backcountry feel close to town, with 73 primitive sites, 16 of them open to equestrian camping, vault toilets, hand-pump water, and a swimming beach on a non-motorized lake. Expect no hookups and limited cell coverage inside the forest. Private resorts run the opposite direction. Sandy Pines features 813 wooded acres with paved roads, large sites with water, electricity, and cable TV hookups, plus 13 heated restrooms with hot showers, laundry, and 24-hour security. Smaller family resorts like Tri Ponds Family Camp Resort and Dumont Lake Campground fall between the two extremes with standard hookups and lake access. Roads into the game area are a mix of pavement and hard-packed dirt. Larger Class A rigs should confirm site length and turn-in clearance before arrival, especially at the primitive campground.
