Camping near Allendale, Michigan
Allendale sits in Ottawa County in western Michigan, roughly halfway between Grand Rapids and the Lake Michigan shoreline at Grand Haven. The town is home to Grand Valley State University and functions as a base for RV travelers who want inland campgrounds within a short drive of both a mid-sized city and the coast.
Private parks dominate the immediate area. Allendale/W Grand Rapids KOA Holiday operates on forested terrain with full hookups and sites large enough to handle most big rigs, sitting between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. Chapel in the Pines Family Campground LLC, Baldwin Oaks Campground, Conestoga Grand River Campground, and Steamboat Park Campground round out the closest options, ranging from wooded family parks to riverfront sites along the Grand River.
The area sits roughly 25 minutes from Grand Haven and Lake Michigan beaches, making it a staging point for day trips to the lakeshore. That mix of inland forest camping and quick beach access is the main reason RV renters choose Allendale over campgrounds directly on the coast, which book out far earlier.
Things to do around Allendale
Water access shapes most itineraries. The Grand River runs through the region, and campgrounds such as Conestoga Grand River Campground and Steamboat Park Campground provide river frontage for kayaking, tubing, and fishing. On-site recreation at Allendale/W Grand Rapids KOA Holiday includes a seasonal heated pool open from late May to early September, two playgrounds, multiple fishing ponds, horseshoes, basketball, and weekend hay wagon rides, plus kayak access to the nearby Grand River.
Day trips are the other half of the plan. Grand Haven State Park stretches along a half-mile of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline with scenic views of the pier and two lighthouses, and includes a designated swim beach, picnic areas, and a boardwalk along the Grand River that is a popular fishing destination. Downtown Grand Rapids, roughly 30 minutes east, adds breweries, museums, and Frederik Meijer Gardens for rainy afternoons.

The core RV season runs from mid-May through mid-October. Summers typically last from late May to early September, with average highs near 80°F (26°C), while winter daytime temperatures often sit near freezing and overnight lows drop well below. July and August are the busiest months, driven by Lake Michigan beach traffic and the Coast Guard Festival in nearby Grand Haven, held during the first week of August. Sites fill quickly during that stretch, particularly waterfront and pond-side spots.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for renters who want cooler nights and easier bookings. Fall color in western Michigan typically peaks in mid-October, and inland parks around Allendale often stay open later than many coastal campgrounds.
Winter is not a practical RV season for most travelers. Allendale averages roughly 79 inches of snow per year, well above the US average of 28 inches. Most private parks reduce services or close entirely between November and April.

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our camper immensely. The owner was very helpful and accommodating. Thank you
Brenda S. - Jul 2026
The camper is well taken care of, has everything you would need for a camping trip, and the host was really easy to communicate with and make time arrangements. We had it delivered and everything was very smooth and easy. We have two small boys who shared the oversized bottom bunk. This is a great RV for families, not too tight of quarters but still a very manageable towing size. I would definitely recommend this RV.

How to book campgrounds near Allendale
Private campgrounds in the Allendale area, including Allendale/W Grand Rapids KOA Holiday, Chapel in the Pines Family Campground LLC, Baldwin Oaks Campground, Conestoga Grand River Campground, and Steamboat Park Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or call-in lines. For summer weekends and any holiday, book two to three months ahead at minimum. Pond-side and riverfront sites go first.
State park sites are handled separately through the Michigan DNR. Campsites, overnight lodging, and harbor slips can be reserved up to six months ahead of the arrival date on a rolling window, through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks and forest campgrounds.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland with pockets of mature hardwood and pine. Most private parks near Allendale offer full or partial hookups, and big-rig access is generally good. Sites at the KOA are large enough to handle most big rigs, with 30 and 50-amp service and full water and sewer connections on many sites, and tenting sites within walking distance of the bathhouse.
Expect standard Midwest campground amenities: dump stations, laundry, camp stores stocking firewood and propane, and family-oriented activity schedules on summer weekends. Cell coverage is reliable across the area given the proximity to Grand Rapids.
A few practical notes for renters. Mosquitoes are active from late May through August, especially near the river. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Michigan emerald ash borer rules. If the plan includes a day at Grand Haven State Park, arrive before mid-morning on summer weekends: the day-use lot fills fast.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Allendale,MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Allendale, Michigan?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Allendale, MI. Michigan does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or trailers driven on a standard license. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and we'll verify your identification through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra trip to the Secretary of State office. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home country license. That's it, you're cleared to cruise M-45 toward Lake Michigan.
michigan.gov/sos/license-id/types-of-licensesIs my RV rental in Allendale protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Allendale booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-96 with confidence. During checkout you'll choose from different protection plan tiers, giving you control over the level of coverage that fits your trip, whether you're heading to Grand Haven for the weekend or making a longer loop up the Lake Michigan shoreline. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV and provides financial peace of mind on the road. Combined with the host's pre-trip walkthrough, you'll feel ready before you ever turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Allendale RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates without stress. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. You'll see the specific cancellation details on the RVezy website during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy provides a full refund or travel credit. Reserve early for July and August (peak Lake Michigan season), knowing you have clear cancellation protections if your schedule shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Allendale?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Allendale is easy to find. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their motorhomes and travel trailers. Once you arrive, your pup will have plenty of room to roam: Allendale Township's Knowlton Family Park has open trails, and Hager Park in nearby Jenison is a local favorite for leashed walks. Many area campgrounds, including the Allendale / West Grand Rapids KOA, have dedicated pet areas. Heading to the coast? Grand Haven City Beach allows leashed dogs in designated stretches outside peak summer hours. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits.
koa.com/campgrounds/allendale/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Allendale?
Yes, RV delivery in Allendale is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-time renter. Many RVezy hosts in the Allendale and Grand Rapids area offer delivery and setup directly to local campgrounds like the Allendale / West Grand Rapids KOA on Warner Street, Grand Haven State Park, or Hoffmaster State Park. Your host will park the rig, level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp shore power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just filter for Delivery on the search page and enter your destination's address. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you'd rather not tow or drive a big rig along I-96.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parksHow many miles can I drive on my Allendale RV trip?
You've got options. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies for each listing, and many Allendale rentals include a generous daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), with additional miles available at a per-mile rate. Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect if you're planning a bigger loop. From Allendale you're only about 20 miles to Grand Haven, 30 miles to Holland, 40 miles to Muskegon, and around 175 miles up to Traverse City. Check the Rules and Mileage section on each listing, and message the host if you're planning a longer haul. Most are happy to customize an allowance.

www2.midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an Allendale RV trip?
Late June through early September is prime time for RV camping in Allendale, with average highs of 79 to 83°F and warm Lake Michigan water perfect for swimming. May and early June are quieter and cooler (highs in the 60s and 70s) and great for trails without the crowds. September and early October are the local insider's pick: comfortable 65 to 75°F days, fewer mosquitoes, and stunning fall color along the Grand River. Winter RVing is doable too (the Allendale KOA stays open year-round), but expect lows around 21°F in January and roughly 79 inches of annual snowfall. Pro tip: book mid-September weekends for the sweet spot of weather and availability.
weather.gov/grr/climateI've never rented an RV before. Is renting in Allendale beginner-friendly?
Allendale is a fantastic spot for your first time renting an RV. The area's roads are wide, flat, and well-marked (think M-45, Lake Michigan Drive, and rural county roads), with very little of the steep mountain driving you'd face out west. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, and dump procedures. You can also message your host anytime before booking with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every trip. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer delivered to the Allendale KOA or a smaller Class C motorhome rental in Allendale. You'll get the full experience without the learning curve of a 35-foot coach.
michigan.gov/msp/divisions/cvedWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Allendale trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on I-96, run out of fuel near Coopersville, or have a battery issue at your campsite, help is one phone call away. You'll also have your host's direct contact for vehicle-specific questions like resetting the inverter or troubleshooting the fridge, plus RVezy's customer support team before, during, and after your trip. West Michigan is well-serviced by RV repair shops in Grand Rapids and Hudsonville if anything more involved comes up. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate before you leave the driveway.
michigan.gov/mspCan I take an RV road trip from Allendale to other states or into Canada?
Yes, and Allendale is a great launchpad. Popular RV road trip from Allendale routes include the Lake Michigan Circle Tour (a 1,100-mile loop through Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula), a 3-hour drive south to the Indiana Dunes National Park, or a 2.5-hour cruise to Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge. Cross-border travel into Canada (Sarnia or Windsor crossings are roughly 3 hours away) may be allowed depending on the host and the protection package, just confirm with your host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: build in time for the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore about 3.5 hours north. It's a bucket-list stop.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and you'll be fine. Most Class C motorhomes in the Allendale area average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers typically drop your tow vehicle to 9 to 13 MPG. Michigan gas prices in 2025-2026 have generally hovered between $3.10 and $3.70 per gallon, with stations in Allendale, Coopersville, and along I-96 usually a bit cheaper than downtown Grand Rapids. A typical 4-night, 300-mile trip in a Class C will run about $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fuel up at the Meijer or Costco in Grandville before heading out, often the lowest prices in the region.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Allendale?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can. Michigan state parks like Grand Haven, Holland, and Hoffmaster open reservations six months in advance through the official Michigan DNR reservation system, and the lakeshore parks often sell out within minutes for July and August Fridays and Saturdays. Private campgrounds like the Allendale / West Grand Rapids KOA usually have more flexibility but still fill up fast for Coast Guard Festival weekend in Grand Haven (early August) and Tulip Time in Holland (early May). Midweek availability is much easier across the board. Set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark, and keep checking the DNR site for cancellation openings closer to your dates.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Allendale?
Driving in and around Allendale is refreshingly low-stress. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, M-45 (Lake Michigan Drive) is a wide, RV-friendly route straight from Allendale to Grand Haven, and I-96 east connects you to Grand Rapids in about 25 minutes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads, and stay alert for sudden lake-effect rain or snow squalls coming off Lake Michigan, especially November through March. Summer brings occasional severe thunderstorms, so check the National Weather Service Grand Rapids forecast before long drives. Pro tip: avoid downtown Grand Rapids during Friday rush hour and ArtPrize (late September), traffic gets tight on US-131 for taller rigs.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities do campgrounds near Allendale offer?
You'll find excellent facilities across the area. The Allendale / West Grand Rapids KOA offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, a pool, laundry, propane refill, and a dump station. Michigan DNR state parks like Grand Haven and Holland provide modern sites with electric hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, potable water fill stations, and dump stations (most don't have sewer at the site, so you'll dump on departure). Many private parks add cable TV, fire rings, and camp stores. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you leave the campground, and use the free dump station at Hoffmaster State Park or the KOA if you're staying somewhere more rustic on the way home.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/amenitiesWhat's included inside the RVs available in Allendale?
More than you might expect. Most motorhome rental Allendale listings (Class A, B, and C) come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted travel seats. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts without the cab. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware; some offer Wi-Fi hotspots or onboard generators for off-grid stays. Each listing's photos and amenities list spell out exactly what's included. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match your group, families of four often do great in a 24 to 28-foot Class C.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons can I get with my Allendale RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer a smart menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options for a campervan rental Allendale or motorhome booking include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator use (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond a daily allowance), bike racks, kayak racks, portable grills, and outdoor patio sets. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on locally, with hosts driving the RV right to the Allendale KOA, Grand Haven State Park, or your driveway. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's home in Allendale, Coopersville, Hudsonville, or Grand Rapids. Pro tip: bundle linens and delivery on your first trip, it's the fastest path from booking to relaxing at the campfire.
michigan.org/article/trip-idea/family-rv-tripHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Allendale through RVezy, you pay online with a credit or debit card, and the platform holds your payment safely until your trip begins. A separate refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup (amounts vary by RV type and host). As long as you return the RV in the same condition, with no damage, no smoking, and within the agreed mileage and generator hours, your deposit is released after the trip. Take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff. It's the easiest way to ensure a smooth deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Allendale during the winter months?
Yes, winter RV rental in Allendale, Michigan is absolutely possible. Some local hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and upgraded insulation, ideal for ice fishing on nearby lakes, snowshoeing at Pigeon Creek Park, or catching a Grand Valley State University hockey weekend. The Allendale / West Grand Rapids KOA stays open year-round and plows sites, though water is typically shut off in winter and you'll rely on the RV's fresh tank plus shore power. Expect January lows around 21°F and lake-effect snow, so pack accordingly. Ask your host about a heated water hose, extra propane, and skirting. These three upgrades turn a chilly trip into a cozy winter adventure.
