Campgrounds near Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor sits in southeast Michigan, roughly 45 minutes west of Detroit and within easy reach of a cluster of state recreation areas, private RV parks, and inland lakes. The surrounding landscape is glacial, with rolling moraines, kettle lakes, and mixed hardwood forest, plus shorefront sites and full-hookup options within a 30 to 45 minute drive of downtown.
The closest destination-style campground is the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday, a private park with hookups and family amenities. To the north, Brighton State Recreation Area offers two rustic options usable by RV travellers: Murray Lake - Brighton State Recreation Area, a small wooded loop on a quiet fishing lake, and the Equestrian Camp - Brighton State Recreation Area, geared to horse trailers but also open to general campers when sites are available.
Additional options within a short drive include K C Campgrounds, a long-running private park, and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley, a larger resort-style property with cabins and full hookups. Together these form the core of the RV inventory for trips based out of Ann Arbor.
Things to do around Ann Arbor
Downtown Ann Arbor centres on the University of Michigan campus, with walkable streets, museums, and a dense restaurant scene. Football Saturdays at Michigan Stadium drive heavy demand for nearby campgrounds, so families planning a game weekend should book early.
Outdoor activity concentrates in the lake belt north and west of the city. Brighton Recreation Area has swimming beaches, mountain-bike trails, and paddling on several kettle lakes, including direct trail access from the Murray Lake loop. Kensington Metropark, adjacent to Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley, offers a nature centre, boat rentals, and a paved loop around Kent Lake that works well for kids on bikes.
Day trips are easy. Hudson Mills and Dexter-Huron Metroparks sit along the Huron River for tubing and fishing, and the Pinckney Recreation Area offers longer hiking loops. Detroit and Toledo are both within about an hour.

The camping season in southeast Michigan runs primarily from late April through mid-October. Michigan state park modern campgrounds typically open in April and close in late October or early November, with a shorter shoulder window on either end when water systems are winterized. The rustic Murray Lake loop at Brighton has a tighter schedule, operating only on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, active thunderstorms, and full campgrounds on most weekends. Independence Day and Labor Day weekends sell out months ahead. September delivers the best balance of weather and availability, with warm days, cool nights, fewer bugs, and shorter reservation lead times.
Spring can be muddy and cool, and black-fly and mosquito activity peaks in late May and June near wetlands. Winter camping is limited, and RV travellers visiting between November and March should confirm hookup availability, plowed roads, and dump-station access before arriving.

Vanessa was a fantastic host! We appreciated the helpful walk through. The RV was fantastic and really made our vacation a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!!!
Zachary R. - Sep 2026
My wife and I had a fantastic first-time RV rental from Vanessa. We attended a 3-day music festival and our accommodations were everything we had hoped for. Right from the start we were able to totally enjoy our trip. Vanessa's associate did a fantastic job orienting us to the RV and covered everything that we needed to know; nothing was missed. We were able to level the RV and set it up for three days of fun with no problem at all. Vanessa thought of everything that we would need to be self sufficient; from garbage bags to paper towels, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, salt and pepper, dish soap, hangers, fly swatter, etc., etc. We had EVERYTHING we needed, all we had to pack was our clothes and food. We had no issues with the RV at all. We couldn't have asked for a better RV rental experience than we had with Vanessa. When we rent again, it will be through Vanessa for sure!!! Thank you Vanessa!!!

How to book near Ann Arbor
Michigan state park campgrounds, including Murray Lake - Brighton State Recreation Area and Equestrian Camp - Brighton State Recreation Area, are reserved through the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com. Bookings open on a six-month rolling window, and popular summer weekends at Brighton are often claimed the day they become available. A Recreation Passport is required on the vehicle for park entry in addition to the site fee.
Private parks use their own systems. Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday books through KOA.com or the KOA app, and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley books through the Sun Outdoors website. K C Campgrounds typically takes reservations by phone.
For Michigan football weekends, graduation in early May, and Art Fair in mid-July, book at least two to three months out across all properties.
What to expect near Ann Arbor
Sites near Ann Arbor range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private resorts to rustic back-in sites at state park loops. Murray Lake - Brighton State Recreation Area has 25 wooded sites in an oak forest, vault toilets, and a hand pump for potable water, but no electricity, showers, or dump station on site. The Equestrian Camp is similarly rustic and geared to horse trailers, so amenities are thin.
Cell coverage is generally strong across Washtenaw and Livingston counties, though it can be spotty inside Brighton. Shade varies, with mature hardwoods at state park loops and more open, sunnier sites at private resorts.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from May through September, so pack repellent and check for ticks after hiking. Firewood must be sourced locally to comply with Michigan's rules on transporting wood, and quiet hours are enforced at state parks.
