Camping near Au Gres, Michigan
Au Gres sits on the western shore of Saginaw Bay in Arenac County, at the mouth of the Au Gres River. The area is a compact fishing and boating town on Lake Huron's Sunrise Side, with sandy beaches, a working marina, and quick access to the Rifle River watershed inland. RV renters use it as a base for walleye fishing on Saginaw Bay, river paddling, and beach days without the crowds of the larger west-Michigan resort towns.
Campground options split into two groups. Waterfront properties like Pt Au Gres Marina and Campground and Brown's Landing RV Park focus on bay access, boat launches, and RV hookups. Inland along the Rifle River, Whispering Pines Campground And Canoe Livery, Big Bend Campground, and Riverbend Campground and Canoe Rental cater to paddlers, tubers, and families who want a wooded setting.
Most sites near Au Gres accommodate rented Class C and travel-trailer rigs, with a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and rustic options depending on the property.
Things to do around Au Gres
Fishing drives the local calendar. Saginaw Bay is one of the top walleye fisheries in the Great Lakes, and charters leave from the Au Gres marina throughout the open-water season. Perch, smallmouth bass, and pike round out the mix, and ice fishing takes over once the bay freezes.
Paddling is the other main draw. The Rifle River runs from the Rifle River Recreation Area down to Lake Huron, and liveries at Whispering Pines Campground And Canoe Livery and Riverbend Campground and Canoe Rental rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes with shuttle service. Standard float trips run two to four hours.
Beyond the water, families use the sandy Lake Huron beaches, ride the region's rail-trail network, and take day trips north to Tawas Point State Park's lighthouse.

The camping season on the Au Gres side of Saginaw Bay is short. Pt Au Gres Marina and Campground is open May 1 to October 1, and other private properties near town run roughly May through October as weather allows. Rifle River liveries and campgrounds generally follow a similar warm-season calendar.
July and August are peak season. Water temperatures on the bay are warm enough for swimming, walleye fishing is in full swing, and river tubing trips run daily. Waterfront sites and full-hookup pads book out well in advance for summer weekends and holidays.
Late spring and September deliver cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall walleye action. Winter closes most campgrounds. Snow falls from November through April, roads narrow, and only a handful of private parks stay open for ice fishing or hunting season.
Booking a campsite near Au Gres
Reservation systems vary by operator. Pt Au Gres Marina and Campground sits directly on Saginaw Bay with 75 campsites and 80 boat docks, ranging from primitive to full hook-up with 30 and 50 amp service, and takes bookings directly through the operator by phone or its own website.
Private campgrounds along the Rifle River, including Whispering Pines Campground And Canoe Livery, Big Bend Campground, Riverbend Campground and Canoe Rental, and Brown's Landing RV Park, also take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends fill first.
When booking with a rented RV, confirm site length, hookup type (full, electric-only, or rustic), and whether the site is pull-through. Some Rifle River properties are electric-only with a central dump station rather than sewer at the site.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Au Gres is flat, with sandy soils near the bay and mixed pine and hardwood inland. Bay-side campgrounds have open, sunny sites close to the water; river campgrounds are shadier and quieter. Expect biting insects in early summer, particularly in the woods along the Rifle River.
Amenities are practical rather than resort-style. Hookups, clean restrooms, playgrounds, boat launches, and fish-cleaning stations are common at bay-side properties, and Pt Au Gres Marina and Campground has a modern bathhouse with hot showers and all-grass sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and spotty at the more remote inland sites.
Au Gres itself is small. Groceries, bait, ice, and propane are available in town, but RV renters heading to inland campgrounds should stock up before leaving the US-23 corridor. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Michigan's rules on moving wood.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Au%20Gres%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Au Gres, Michigan?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Au Gres. midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an Au Gres RV trip?

May and September are quieter, cooler (50s to 70s), and great for walleye fishing without weekend crowds. Most local campgrounds, including the City of Au Gres Riverfront Campground, operate roughly from mid-April through mid-October. Winter rentals are rare here because of cold temperatures and snow. Insider tip: time your visit for the late-June walleye tournament weekends and downtown comes alive.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never rented an RV before. Is Au Gres a good place to start?
Au Gres is one of the easiest places in Michigan for a first-timer because traffic is light, US-23 is flat and well-marked, and many campgrounds have pull-through sites you'll never need to back into. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, showing you the water, electric, propane, slide-outs, and dump valves before you drive away. You can also message the host with questions before booking. michigan.org/article/trip-idea/us-23-heritage-routeWhat should I budget for fuel on an Au Gres RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but it is very predictable. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes typically run 8-12 MPG, and Class A coaches around 6-10 MPG. Towable trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 9-13 MPG combined. Michigan gas prices generally track a few cents under the national average. For a 200-mile weekend loop from Au Gres to Tawas Point and back, plan on roughly $60-$110 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Standish or West Branch where prices tend to be lowest along the I-75 corridor.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Au Gres?
For peak summer weekends, book your campsite as soon as you book your motorhome rental in Au Gres, ideally 4 to 6 months out. Michigan state parks like Tawas Point release reservations up to six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system, and lakeside electric sites disappear fast for July 4 and Labor Day. The City of Au Gres Riverfront Campground handles bookings directly through the city, including online reservations. Midweek arrivals (Sunday to Thursday) are far easier to snag, and shoulder-season trips in May or late September often have walk-in availability.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Au Gres?
Driving an RV around Au Gres is refreshingly stress-free. US-23, the main artery through town, is a flat two-lane highway with wide shoulders and very little big-city traffic, ideal for a campervan rental in Au Gres or a 30-foot Class C. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk along wooded stretches between Au Gres and Omer, and slow down in summer when boat trailers turn into and out of marinas along the Au Gres River. Snow and icy conditions can hit the Sunrise Coast from November through March, so most RV trips stay between April and October when roads are clear.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Au Gres?
Most campgrounds near Au Gres offer the essentials you need for a smooth stay. Tawas Point State Park has electric sites, modern restrooms with showers, and a sanitation station. For potable water and dumping mid-trip, the Au Gres harbor and most local marinas have public fill stations. Pack a 50-to-30-amp dogbone adapter and a 25-foot freshwater hose just in case.

Many Class C motorhomes include a TV, and some hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots. Generator availability and outdoor gear vary, so check each listing's amenities. Walleye fishing on Saginaw Bay? rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Au%20Gres%2C%20MichiganHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit card, not directly to the host, so there are no parking-lot cash handoffs in Au Gres. At booking you'll see the rental cost, service fee, taxes, and any add-ons broken out clearly. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment a few days before pickup (the amount varies by RV) and released after the host confirms the rig comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the mileage and generator policies on the listing, and return with a clean interior and the same fuel level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat is the local insider move for an unforgettable Au Gres trip?
Here's the local secret: time your Au Gres RV trip around sunrise on Saginaw Bay. Au Gres calls itself the gateway to Michigan's Sunrise Coast for a reason, and the boardwalk along the Au Gres River into Saginaw Bay is one of the best free seats in the house. Grab a bakery treat downtown, walk or bike the path to the river mouth, sample a flight at a local tasting room in the afternoon, and finish with a Friday fish dinner at a downtown pub. Book a riverfront site at the City of Au Gres Riverfront Campground and you're walking distance to all of it.
