Campgrounds near Au Sable, Michigan
Au Sable sits on Lake Huron's Sunrise Side, where the Au Sable River meets the lake between Oscoda and Tawas. The area is a practical base for RV travelers looking to combine Great Lakes beaches, river paddling, and the Huron National Forest. Most campgrounds cluster along the US-23 corridor within a short drive of the river mouth.
Tawas Point State Park occupies a sand spit that forms Tawas Bay along Lake Huron and serves as a well-known stopover for migrating birds in spring and fall. To the north, Harrisville State Park is set along the sandy shores of Lake Huron, with a day-use area in a stand of pine and cedar trees, a modern campground, a designated swim beach, and trails, and it is one of Michigan's oldest state parks, established in 1921.
Private options in the corridor include Oscoda / Tawas KOA Holiday, Tawas River RV Park, and Brown's Landing RV Park, which offer full hookups and typically suit larger rigs and longer stays.
Things to do near Au Sable
The Au Sable River is the region's centerpiece for paddling, fishing, and shoreline drives. The Lumbermen's Monument and River Road Scenic Byway follow the river's high banks west of Oscoda and connect to trailheads and overlooks in the Huron National Forest.
On Lake Huron, families use the shallow, warm waters of Tawas Bay for swimming, and rock hunters comb the beaches near Harrisville State Park. Cyclists can ride paved paths in the Tawas area, part of the broader Iron Belle Trail system.
Other stops include the Tawas Point Lighthouse, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse north of Harrisville, and birdwatching along the point during spring and fall migrations.

The core camping season on the Sunrise Side runs from mid-spring through late fall. At Harrisville State Park, camping facilities are open from April 15 to November 1, and other Michigan state park campgrounds in the area follow a similar seasonal window. Private parks operate on longer schedules; Tawas River RV Park sits on the banks of the Tawas River about six miles from the state park, is operational year-round, and can house RVs up to 35 feet.
Summer is peak season, and lakeside sites book out quickly for weekends and holidays. Booking well in advance is advisable, especially for summer weekends and holidays, as the campground is very popular and fills quickly, so target prime dates like the Fourth of July several months out.
Spring brings cool nights, active bug season by late May, and strong bird migration. Fall offers quieter campgrounds, color along the Au Sable, and cold Lake Huron water. Winters are cold and snowy, and most state park campgrounds are closed.
How to book campgrounds near Au Sable
Michigan state park sites at Tawas Point State Park and Harrisville State Park are reserved through the state's central system. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle access to state parks and recreation areas, state-managed boating access sites, state forest campgrounds, thousands of miles of trails and other outdoor spaces.
The reservation window typically opens 6 months before your planned stay date on a rolling basis, so prime lakefront and holiday weekends should be targeted the day they open.
Private parks such as Oscoda / Tawas KOA Holiday, Tawas River RV Park, and Brown's Landing RV Park are booked directly through each operator, often with deposit and cancellation policies distinct from the state system.
What to expect on-site
State park campgrounds in the area are modern, with electric hookups, potable water fills, and shared bathhouses. Harrisville State Park features 195 campground sites, one modern bathhouse, and two mini-cabins with electricity, a fire ring, and an outdoor grill. Sites are wooded and moderately close together, with a handful along the lakeshore.
Restrooms with showers and running water at Tawas Point are located within the modern campground and are open year-round, and pets are welcome on leash with restrictions on certain beaches and trails. Cell service is generally reliable in Oscoda and Tawas but can be spotty inside the Huron National Forest.
Bring firewood purchased locally, bug protection for late spring and early summer, and layers for cool Lake Huron nights even in July.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Au Sable, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Au Sable, Michigan?
An RV rental in Au Sable is one of the most affordable ways to experience Michigan's Sunrise Coast. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range $175 to $275, and larger Class A units sit around $250 to $400. Summer weekends along the Au Sable River book fastest, so renting Sunday through Thursday or visiting in late May or September can save you 20 to 30 percent. Use the price filter on RVezy to compare quickly. Many local hosts bundle generator use or outdoor gear into the nightly rate, so look for listings near Oscoda for the best value on your Au Sable RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Au%20Sable%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Au Sable, Michigan?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Au Sable. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers. RVezy's approved driver guidelines require renters to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the booking flow, so there's no DMV trip needed. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit. Then it's just hitch up, or have the host deliver, and head for the River Road National Scenic Byway.

The protection plan covers most damages to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind while exploring the Huron-Manistee National Forests or driving the River Road byway. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Au Sable RV trip?
You can book your Au Sable RV trip with confidence because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy across every listing. There is a grace period after booking when you can cancel for a full refund, and additional protections apply for qualifying situations. The exact terms depend on how far out your trip is and the circumstances, so review the current cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. Locking in a summer weekend along the Au Sable River early is low risk, and you'll have the pick of the best riverfront motorhomes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Au Sable?
Absolutely. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental in Au Sable on RVezy and you'll see plenty of travel trailers and motorhomes that welcome dogs, often with no extra fee. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: dogs are allowed on a 6-foot leash throughout the Huron-Manistee National Forests, at Tawas Point State Park, and along the Highbanks Trail above the Au Sable River. The Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center grounds are also leash-friendly. Message the host before booking if you have more than one dog, and pack a towel because the Lake Huron shoreline is irresistible.
fs.usda.gov/hmnfCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Au Sable?
Yes, RV delivery in Au Sable is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at places like Old Orchard Park Campground, Monument Campground, or Rollways Recreation Area, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter listings by Delivery to see which hosts offer it and how far they will go, with most covering Oscoda, Tawas, Mio, and along the River Road byway. You drive your own vehicle, they handle the rig: it's the easiest way to enjoy an Au Sable RV trip without towing a trailer yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Au%20Sable%2C%20MichiganHow many miles do I get with my Au Sable RV rental?
You'll have plenty of range to explore. Most hosts in the Au Sable area include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for an extra daily fee, which can be smart if you're planning a longer loop. For perspective: Oscoda to Mackinaw City is about 130 miles, Au Sable to Traverse City is around 145 miles, and a full River Road National Scenic Byway out-and-back is roughly 44 miles. The exact mileage allowance is listed on each RVezy listing under the pricing section, so you can compare at a glance before booking.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/hmnf/recarea/?recid=18713Where are the best campgrounds near Au Sable, Michigan?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Au Sable. Top picks include: Old Orchard Park Campground in Oscoda, a township-run park where the Au Sable River meets Lake Huron, with full hookups; Monument Campground on River Road in the Huron-Manistee National Forests near Lumberman's Monument; Rollways Campground near Hale, with bluff-top views over the Au Sable; Tawas Point State Park about 15 miles south with Lake Huron beachfront sites; and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Tawas City for families. Old Orchard's riverfront loops book up months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your RVezy dates are locked in.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/tawas-pointWhen is the best time to visit Au Sable in an RV?
Late June through mid-September is prime time for an Au Sable RV trip, with daytime highs typically in the upper 70s to low 80s F and warm Lake Huron swimming by mid-July. May and early June are quieter and cooler, perfect for trout fishing the Holy Waters of the Au Sable. Don't sleep on fall: late September through mid-October brings spectacular hardwood color along River Road, fewer crowds, and crisp days in the 50s to mid-60s F. Winters here are cold with lake-effect snow, so most hosts pause bookings November through April. Aim for the AuSable River Canoe Marathon in late July for an unforgettable local scene.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Au Sable?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, and Au Sable is one of the friendliest places in Michigan to learn. Roads like US-23 along Lake Huron and River Road are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked outside of summer holiday weekends. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, hookups, and dump procedures before you drive a mile. You can message the host any time during your trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking. Choose delivery if you'd rather skip driving the rig entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Au Sable RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on M-65 near Hale, parked at Foote Dam, or rolling north on US-23. The service handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also a quick message away in the RVezy app and knows the rig inside and out. Cell coverage is generally solid along US-23 and in Oscoda, though it can get patchy deep in the Huron National Forest, so screenshot key info before heading to remote campsites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are good road trip destinations from Au Sable?
You're perfectly positioned for an RV road trip from Au Sable. Top routes: Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge (about 130 miles north on US-23, around 2.5 hours) for ferries to Mackinac Island; Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (about 175 miles west, 3.5 hours) for towering Lake Michigan dunes; Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula (around 250 miles, 5 hours) for sea caves and waterfalls; Traverse City wine country (about 145 miles, 2.5 hours); and Hartwick Pines State Park near Grayling (about 50 miles, 1 hour) for old-growth white pines. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval, but Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
nps.gov/slbe/index.htmHow much will fuel cost on an Au Sable RV trip?
Budgeting is straightforward. Class C motorhomes around Au Sable average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. Michigan regular unleaded has recently run roughly $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon. For a typical 4-night loop covering Oscoda, Tawas, and a run up to Alpena (roughly 200 miles total), plan on $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Oscoda or Tawas City before heading inland, because stations along M-65 and M-72 are sparse and often a few cents pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Au Sable?
Book earlier than you think. Riverfront and Lake Huron sites at Old Orchard Park, Monument Campground, and Tawas Point State Park often fill 4 to 6 months ahead for July and August weekends. Michigan state park sites are reserved through the Michigan DNR reservation system up to 6 months in advance. National forest sites along the Au Sable River are booked via Recreation.gov, also 6 months out. For a holiday weekend like Fourth of July or Labor Day, set a calendar reminder. Weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often have openings even mid-summer, so flex your dates and you'll snag a riverfront gem.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Au Sable?
Driving around Au Sable is refreshingly easy. US-23 (the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway) runs along Lake Huron with gentle curves, wide shoulders, and minimal hills, comfortable for any size RV. River Road National Scenic Byway is paved and well-maintained with scenic pull-offs that fit motorhomes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round in Iosco County, and slow down on M-65 and county roads where gravel shoulders are common. In summer, motorcycle traffic picks up. Winter brings lake-effect snow and ice, which is why most hosts close November through April. Stick to summer or early fall and you'll have smooth, scenic driving the whole trip.
michigan.gov/mdotWhat amenities do campgrounds near Au Sable offer?
You've got real range. Full-service parks like Old Orchard Park in Oscoda and Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Tawas typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer hookups, dump stations, hot showers, and Wi-Fi. State forest and national forest sites such as Monument Campground and Rollways are more rustic with vault toilets, hand-pump or well water, fire rings, and no hookups, so you'll rely on your RV's freshwater tank, batteries, and generator. You can usually top off freshwater at most Iosco County parks. A Michigan Recreation Passport ($14 for residents, $45 for non-residents at time of writing) gets you into state parks and state forest campgrounds.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passportWhat's included inside a typical Au Sable RV rental?
You'll be set up to live comfortably from day one. A typical motorhome rental in Au Sable on RVezy comes with a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunks (sleeps 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for all designated passengers. Most rigs include a TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or a generator for boondocking along the Au Sable River. Kitchen kits, linens, and camp chairs are often included or available as add-ons. Check each listing's amenities tab to see exactly what's packed before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Au%20Sable%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for RV rentals in Au Sable?
Hosts in the Au Sable area love making your trip easy. Common add-ons include kayaks and paddleboards (perfect for the Au Sable River's calm sections), bikes, generators for off-grid sites, bedding and kitchen packages, outdoor grills, and propane fills. Delivery to specific campgrounds like Old Orchard Park, Monument Campground, or Tawas Point State Park is the most popular extra, often billed per mile from the host's home base. Pickup typically happens in the late morning or afternoon, with same-day drop-off mid-morning, but many hosts flex on times if you message ahead. All add-ons, fees, and mileage policies are spelled out clearly on each RVezy listing, so there are no surprises at checkout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Au%20Sable%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work for an Au Sable RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your booking protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is held a few days before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid hold-ups, take time-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and tanks at pickup and again at drop-off, return with the fuel and propane levels the listing requires, and message the host immediately if anything comes up. Then enjoy your Au Sable family RV trip stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cheap RV rental options in Au Sable for budget travelers?
Plenty. A cheap RV rental in Au Sable usually means a well-loved travel trailer from around $85 to $120 per night or a compact campervan rental in Au Sable from $110 to $150. To stretch your budget further, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), travel in late May, early June, or September when summer rates ease, look for hosts offering free local delivery within Iosco County, and pick rustic state forest sites like AuSable State Forest Campground instead of full-hookup parks. Sort listings by price low-to-high on RVezy and focus on rigs near Oscoda or Tawas City. Many hosts also give a weekly discount of 10 to 15 percent if you stay 7 nights or more.
