Campgrounds and RV parks near Barnes Lake, MI

Barnes Lake is a small lake community in Deerfield Township, northern Lapeer County, roughly 15 minutes from the city of Lapeer and about 35 minutes from Flint. The area sits in the rolling farmland and mixed hardwoods of the Thumb region, with several inland lakes, county parks, and state recreation areas within a short drive. Access to Barnes Lake itself is restricted to lake club members, so RV travelers typically use nearby public and private campgrounds for their base. RV renters have a mix of options within a 30-minute radius. Washakie Campground and Golf in North Branch pairs full-service sites with an 18-hole course and a private lake. Genesee Otter Lake Campground and Hilltop Campgrounds serve family RV travelers, while Elba Equestrian Complex offers rustic horse camping inside the Holloway Reservoir Regional Park. Covenant Hills Camp and Retreat rounds out the local group and church-camp options. State-managed camping is also close by: Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area sits about eight miles south of Lapeer, and Ortonville Recreation Area covers roughly 5,400 acres of Hadley Hills terrain a bit further southwest.

State-managed sites at Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area and Ortonville Recreation Area are booked through the Michigan DNR reservation system at midnrreservations.com or by contacting the DNR central reservations call center. Campsites can be reserved up to six months ahead of the arrival date, and a Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to state parks, boating access sites, and state forest campgrounds. Private parks handle reservations directly. Washakie Campground and Golf takes nightly, weekly, monthly, and seasonal reservations by phone, and reservations are required. Elba Equestrian Complex is booked online or by phone through the Genesee County Parks reservation office. For summer weekends and holiday stretches, book state park sites at the six-month opening if possible; popular loops fill within minutes on prime dates.
