Campgrounds near Benton Harbor
Benton Harbor sits on the St. Joseph River where it meets Lake Michigan in Berrien County, roughly 90 minutes from Chicago and about an hour from South Bend. Benton Harbor and the neighboring city of St. Joseph developed on opposite sides of the St. Joseph River and are commonly referred to as the Twin Cities. The area anchors southwest Michigan's fruit belt and beach corridor, and RV travelers use it as a base for Lake Michigan shoreline, orchards, and wineries.
Camping options range from private RV parks to municipal beachfront campgrounds. Eden Springs Park at the House of David sits inside the city itself, while Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday offers full-service sites a short drive north. Dune Lake Campground lies inland toward Coloma, and two Lake Michigan beachfront options, Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman and Covert Park Beach and Campground in Covert, bracket the city to the south and north.
Most dune-adjacent parks are seasonal and fill quickly on summer weekends, so trip planning typically means booking well ahead and pairing a beachfront stay with an inland backup.
Things to do near Benton Harbor
The main draw is Lake Michigan itself: swimming, paddling, and sunset walks on wide sand beaches. Warren Dunes State Park sits just south in Sawyer and is a major day-trip destination, with three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, dunes reaching about 260 feet above the water, and six miles of hiking trails through oak savannas. Sandboarding is allowed on designated dunes, and hang gliding is permitted with a park permit.
In town, families use the Silver Beach Carousel, the Curious Kids Museum, and the Krasl Art Center on the St. Joseph side of the river. Paved paths along Lake Michigan and the Paw Paw and St. Joseph rivers link waterfront parks in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. Fruit picking, cider mills, and the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail round out an easy shoulder-season itinerary, and paddlers can put in along the Paw Paw River.

The camping season in southwest Michigan is short and concentrated. Weko Beach Campground offers 68 camp sites and 7 rustic cabins available May through mid-October, and Covert Park's camp season runs May 15 through October 15, with reservations opening April 1. Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday follows a similar spring-to-fall window, while Eden Springs Park at the House of David is the local outlier and offers year-round RV camping.
July and August are peak. Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest times at Warren Dunes, so arriving early or visiting midweek helps avoid crowds. Lake Michigan warms slowly, so late June through early September is the reliable swim window. September brings smaller crowds, cool nights, and orchard season.
Winter is harsh along the lake. Benton Harbor has a humid continental climate, and lake-effect snow drives high snowfall totals from November into April. Most beachfront campgrounds close entirely by mid-October.
How to book near Benton Harbor
Reservation systems vary by operator, so plan ahead by campground. Warren Dunes State Park is booked through the Michigan DNR: campsites, lodging and harbors can be reserved up to six months in advance, and a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds. Popular summer weekends at Warren Dunes book out the moment the six-month window opens.
Municipal parks use their own booking pages. Reservations for Weko Beach can be made online at www.bridgman.org or by email at [email protected]. Covert Park Beach and Campground takes online bookings at covertpark.com, Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday uses the KOA reservation system, and Eden Springs Park at the House of David books directly with the campground office. For summer weekends, holding a site eight to twelve weeks in advance is realistic for private parks.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near the dunes are sandy and often not level, which matters for RV setup. Most sites lack level ground, so bringing levelers proves essential for RV campers. Bigger rigs should confirm length limits: the City of Bridgman maintains sites across two RV loops and one primitive area, with electric and water hookups available for RVs up to 30 feet, and Covert Park can accommodate most RVs up to 32 feet in length.
Amenities cluster at the private parks, where the KOA typically layers on a pool, playground, camp store, and organized activities. Municipal campgrounds are simpler: fire rings, picnic tables, shower buildings, and short walks to the beach. Cell service is inconsistent close to the shoreline, and at Covert Park there is no cell service on the campground. Dogs are welcome in most campgrounds but not on all beaches, so check pet rules per park before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Benton Harbor, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Benton Harbor, MI?
RV rental in Benton Harbor is one of the most affordable ways to experience Michigan's southwest coast. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and Class A motorhomes from $250 to $400 per night. Hosts set their own pricing, so you can filter by your budget and see real-time rates. Want a cheap RV rental in Benton Harbor? Book midweek, travel in May or September shoulder season, and look for travel trailers with delivery included. Many local hosts offer multi-night discounts for 5+ night stays, which pairs perfectly with a beach week at Warren Dunes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Benton%20Harbor%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Benton Harbor?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Benton Harbor for virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most Class A rigs. RVezy approved drivers must be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and ID is verified right through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. The only quirky Michigan rule, the Recreational Double R endorsement, only applies if you're towing a fifth wheel plus an extra trailer, which is extremely rare for renters.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Benton Harbor RV rental?
Every RV rental in Benton Harbor booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Red Arrow Highway or I-94 with real peace of mind. Protection plans cover most damages to the RV during your trip and you choose your coverage level during checkout, picking the package that best fits your trip and comfort level, not the host. If a tire blows on the way to Warren Dunes or you need a tow on US-31, roadside assistance is one phone call away. That safety net makes a first time renting an RV here feel a whole lot easier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Benton Harbor RV trip?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not the host), and there's a grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and RVezy also has provisions for major disruptions, which matter in a lake effect region like southwest Michigan. The exact policy details are reviewed during the checkout process. If you're unsure, message the host with questions first, then book once you're ready. With Lake Michigan summer weekends filling up fast, locking in your campervan rental Benton Harbor early is the smart play.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Benton Harbor RV rental?
Absolutely, southwest Michigan is a dream for dogs, and many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Benton Harbor. Just toggle the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where pups are welcome (some hosts charge a small pet fee, which is shown upfront). Once you're here, head to Warren Dunes State Park, which has dog-friendly shoreline north of the swim buoy with pets on a 6-foot leash. Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor allows leashed dogs on the bluff trails (not the main swim beach), and Rocky Gap County Park is another off-the-radar favorite. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet rules, then pack a beach towel for sandy paws.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/parks-petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Benton Harbor?
Yes, RV delivery in Benton Harbor is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Warren Dunes State Park, Coloma/St. Joseph KOA, or Eden Springs, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the awning on your own. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this. Delivery fees vary by distance, but most hosts within 30 miles of Benton Harbor charge a flat rate that's well worth it for a stress-free start to your motorhome rental Benton Harbor trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Benton%20Harbor%2C%20Michigan&Delivery=trueHow does the mileage policy work for a Benton Harbor RV rental?
Mileage is straightforward: each host sets their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100-150 free miles per day), and additional miles run roughly $0.30-$0.50 each. Some hosts even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer RV road trip from Benton Harbor. To put it in perspective from Benton Harbor: Chicago is about 95 miles, Holland is 60 miles, Grand Rapids is 90 miles, Saugatuck is 45 miles, and Sleeping Bear Dunes is roughly 220 miles. For a beach week parked at Warren Dunes you'll barely use any miles. For a big loop up the Lake Michigan shoreline, filter for unlimited mileage listings. Ask the host upfront so the math is clear before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Understanding-mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Benton Harbor for an RV?
You've got fantastic options for RV camping in Benton Harbor, all within easy reach of downtown. Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer, about 15 miles south, is the headliner with modern sites, full beach access, and the iconic Tower Hill dune. Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday on Coloma Road offers full-hookup sites, a pool, and is open spring through fall. Eden Springs Park at the historic House of David site right in Benton Harbor has year-round sites and a charming miniature train. Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman puts you steps from Lake Michigan. Book Warren Dunes the moment the 6-month booking window opens on MiDNRReservations.com, summer weekends sell out quickly.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Benton Harbor?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Benton Harbor RV trip, with July and August delivering peak Lake Michigan beach weather (highs in the low 80s, warm water temps). June is a sweet spot for fewer crowds and the start of berry season, while September and early October bring crisp air, harvest festivals, and stunning fall color along the Red Arrow Highway. Mid-November through March can be challenging for new RVers as lake effect snow is common and most campgrounds shut water service. The Blossomtime Festival in early May and the late-September Apple Cider Century cycling event are local favorites worth planning around.
weather.gov/iwx/I've never driven an RV before. Is Benton Harbor a good place to start?
Benton Harbor is honestly one of the easier places in the Midwest for a first time renting an RV. Roads in Berrien County are flat, wide, and well-maintained, I-94 runs straight through town with easy on/off ramps, and most campgrounds (Warren Dunes, KOA Coloma, Weko Beach) have generous pull-through sites. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and tanks, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Want zero driving stress? Pick the Delivery filter and the host brings the RV to your campsite. Do a slow practice loop in the campground before your first trip out, then head to Silver Beach in St. Joseph, an easy 10-minute drive with simple parking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with a protection plan, so a flat tire on I-94, a dead battery at Warren Dunes, or a lockout at Eden Springs is one phone call away. Help is dispatched directly to your location anywhere in southwest Michigan. Your host is also a message away for quick questions about the rig (how the water heater works, where the fuse panel lives), and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. When you do your walkthrough at pickup, snap photos of the breaker panel and propane valves so any late-night call is quick and easy. That backup is why so many guests feel confident on their first RV road trip from Benton Harbor.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailHow far can I travel from Benton Harbor on an RV road trip?
Benton Harbor is a launch pad for some of the best RV road trip routes in the Midwest. Chicago is about 95 miles (under 2 hours), Holland and Tulip Time is 60 miles north, Saugatuck and Douglas (artsy beach towns) sit 45 miles up the coast, Grand Rapids is 90 miles, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 220 miles north, a stunning 4-hour drive along US-31. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many RVezy listings (message the host to confirm and bring your passport), but trips to Mexico are not permitted since insurance does not extend there. The Lake Michigan Circle Tour signs make navigation a breeze once you leave town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Expect realistic numbers: Class B campervans get 18-22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8-12 mpg, Class A rigs 6-9 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer roughly 10-14 mpg. Michigan gas prices vary by season but you'll find plenty of large-rig-friendly stations along I-94 near Bridgman, Stevensville, and Benton Harbor. For a 5-day trip parked mostly at Warren Dunes with a few short drives, most renters spend a modest amount on fuel. Fill up at a major travel station off I-94 before heading north on US-31, as gas often gets pricier in the small lakeshore towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Benton Harbor?
For summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book the day reservations open, 6 months in advance, on MiDNRReservations.com. Warren Dunes and other Michigan state parks often sell out for July and August weekends within minutes. Private campgrounds like Coloma/St. Joseph KOA, Weko Beach, and Eden Springs typically need 2-3 months lead time for peak summer but have more midweek flexibility. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for state park entry (a small annual fee for Michigan residents and a daily fee for non-residents). If a state park is fully booked, set a free cancellation alert tool, sites open up constantly as plans change.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like around Benton Harbor?
Driving is refreshingly easy here. Berrien County is flat with gentle rolling terrain, no mountain passes, and I-94, US-31, and the scenic Red Arrow Highway are the main routes, all well-suited to RVs. Watch for two location-specific quirks: lake effect snow squalls between November and March can drop visibility fast (another reason to RV here in summer), and Lake Michigan beach traffic on summer Saturdays can back up the Warren Dunes exit, so arrive before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Downtown St. Joseph has some tight streets and a low railroad underpass, so check your RV height clearance before routing through the historic core.
michigan.gov/mdot/travelWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Benton Harbor?
Local campgrounds near Benton Harbor are well equipped. Warren Dunes Mt. Randall Modern Campground offers 50-amp and 30-amp electric, shower and restroom buildings, a dump station, and potable water fills near the entrance. Coloma/St. Joseph KOA has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), a heated pool, WiFi, and propane refills on site. Eden Springs Park has full hookups year-round. For dump stations and fresh water between trips, the KOA and Hidden Ponds RV Resort both offer paid drop-in dumping for non-guests. Bring a 25-foot fresh water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, as some Warren Dunes sites have utility hookups farther from the pad than expected.
midnrreservations.com/What's typically included inside an RVezy rental in Benton Harbor?
Most RVs on RVezy come move-in ready. You can expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/sofa sleepers, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, basic cookware and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both AC and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many Class C and Class A rigs include a TV and a generator for off-grid use. WiFi varies by host (Lake Michigan cell coverage is solid on major carriers, spottier inland). Each listing page shows exactly what's included, plus add-ons like bedding and linen packages, camp chairs, kayaks, bikes, and outdoor grills. Filter by Sleeps Count to match your group, and message the host if you need a specific feature like roof solar or a backup camera.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Benton%20Harbor%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for RV rentals in Benton Harbor?
Hosts make customizing your trip easy. Popular Benton Harbor add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generators, propane refills, camp chairs, fire pits, bikes, kayaks, beach gear, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's location in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Stevensville, or Bridgman, but many hosts offer delivery to Warren Dunes, KOA Coloma, or your driveway for a flat fee. Drop-off mirrors pickup unless you arrange one-way logistics with the host directly through messaging. Mileage allowances and generator-hour limits are spelled out on each listing. Bundle delivery, setup, and linens on your first trip, then graduate to a self-pickup on trip two once you know the ropes. It's the easiest way to rent an RV in Benton Harbor.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Benton%20Harbor%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host in cash. A security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged unless there's damage or excess cleaning at return. Once the host confirms a clean return, the hold drops off your card within a few business days. To avoid any deposit issues: do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, snap photos of any pre-existing dings, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a dump station before drop-off (or pay the host's dump fee, also clearly listed). That's all there is to it, no surprises on your Michigan RV rental.
