Campgrounds near Benton Heights, Michigan
Benton Heights sits in Berrien County in southwest Michigan, just inland from the Lake Michigan shoreline and adjacent to the twin cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. The area combines sandy Great Lakes beaches, dune formations, and rolling fruit-belt farmland, giving RV renters a mix of beachfront parks, wooded county campgrounds, and full-service private resorts within a short drive.
Close-in options include Eden Springs Park at the House of David, a historic property in Benton Harbor with full-hookup RV sites and primitive tent areas, and Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday, a family-oriented private park with standard KOA amenities. Along the lakeshore, Dune Lake Campground, Covert Park Beach and Campground, and Covert / South Haven KOA Holiday put beach access, swimming, and small-town waterfronts within easy reach.
Most RV renters use Benton Heights as a base for South Haven, St. Joseph, and the wineries and orchards along the Red Arrow Highway corridor.
Things to do near Benton Heights
Lake Michigan is the main draw. Sandy beaches, piers, and lighthouses in St. Joseph and South Haven anchor most trips, and the dune systems south of Benton Heights are popular for hiking and swimming. Silver Beach County Park in St. Joseph offers a wide public beach, a playground, and picnic areas, and the Silver Beach Carousel and Whirlpool Compass Fountain sit steps away.
Cyclists can ride the Van Buren Trail State Park from South Haven and connect to the Kal-Haven Trail State Park, a crushed-limestone rail trail that runs about 33.5 miles east from South Haven to Kalamazoo.
Families staying at Eden Springs Park at the House of David can ride the historic miniature trains on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Orchards, u-pick berry farms, and Southwest Michigan wineries round out rainy-day and shoulder-season plans.

The core RV camping season along this stretch of Lake Michigan runs from late spring through early fall. Most private parks near Benton Heights, including Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday, operate from mid-April into mid-October, while Michigan state park campgrounds in the area typically open in April and close in the fall, with modern bathhouse facilities available from mid-spring into late fall.
July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures, the busiest beaches, and the highest demand for sites. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and the South Haven Blueberry Festival book out well in advance. May, June, September, and early October are quieter and generally cooler, with fewer crowds and better site selection.
Winter is cold and snowy, with lake-effect snow common off Lake Michigan. Eden Springs Park at the House of David is one of the few nearby options that stays open year-round; most other campgrounds close for the season.
How to book a campsite
Michigan state park campgrounds, including Van Buren State Park south of South Haven, are reserved through the MiDNRReservations system online or by phone at 1-800-447-2757. Campsites can be booked up to six months in advance of the arrival date, and popular loops near Lake Michigan sell out quickly for summer weekends. All state park visitors also need a Michigan Recreation Passport.
KOA properties such as Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday and Covert / South Haven KOA Holiday accept reservations directly on the KOA website or by phone. Eden Springs Park at the House of David takes reservations by contacting the campground directly, and county-run sites at Covert Park Beach and Campground are handled through Van Buren County parks.
For July, August, and holiday weekends, book two to three months out at minimum.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of full-hookup private resorts and simpler public campgrounds. KOA parks and Eden Springs Park at the House of David offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, gravel pull-through sites, and modern bathhouses. Van Buren State Park sites include electricity, a picnic table, and a fire ring, with modern restroom and shower buildings and a dump station on site, but no direct lake views from the sites themselves.
Cell service is generally reliable near the highways but can drop off inside dune-shaded loops. Mosquitoes and stable flies are typical near the lake in mid-summer, so bring repellent.
Roads into most parks are paved or well-graded gravel and handle larger rigs without issue, though sites at older public campgrounds can be tight for slide-outs.

Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at Warren Dunes State Park, Weko Beach Campground, or a private driveway in Benton Harbor or St. Joseph. Delivery fees vary by distance but often pay for themselves in fuel savings and reduced stress. Pro tip: request setup at a full-hookup site so you can enjoy the trip without ever towing.

midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Benton Heights?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV trip in Benton Heights, with the sweet spot being mid-June to late August when Lake Michigan water warms into the 70s F and daytime highs sit around 80 to 85 F. September is the insider favorite: warm days near 75 F, cool sleeping nights, fewer crowds, and harvest season along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail. Winters are cold with lake-effect snow and lows often in the teens, but some hosts offer winterized RVs for ice-fishing trips. Pro tip: plan an August visit to take advantage of peak beach weather and weekend events along the lakeshore.
weather.gov/grr/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect. Your RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slides, water systems, propane, and dump procedures. You can also message the host with questions before booking right from the listing page. Benton Heights is an ideal launchpad: roads are flat, traffic is light outside of summer beach weekends, and you are minutes from large state park campgrounds with pull-through sites. Pro tip: choose a travel trailer or Class C for your first trip since they are easier to handle than a 35-foot Class A, and ask your host for a printed cheat sheet.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002237993-RentersWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a quick message away and knows their RV inside and out. Benton Heights sits right off I-94, so help can usually reach you fast whether you are at Warren Dunes, South Haven, or down a quieter road near Coloma. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone and snap a photo of your RV's plate and VIN before leaving the host's driveway.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Benton Heights RV rental to Indiana, Illinois, or Canada?
Yes to many neighboring road trips, just confirm with your host first. Most RVezy hosts in Michigan allow travel across state lines, so you can run down to Indiana Dunes National Park (about 45 minutes south), into Chicago (about 2 hours via I-94), or up to Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 3.5 hours north). Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: an RV road trip from Benton Heights to Indiana Dunes and back makes a great weekend loop with two distinct shoreline experiences.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Benton Heights?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it is predictable. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A coaches average 6 to 8 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but usually pull 10 to 13 MPG. Michigan gas prices generally hover near the national average, and you will find plenty of stations along I-94 and US-31 around Benton Heights and St. Joseph. A typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C costs roughly $100 to $150 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: Costco in Stevensville (about 10 minutes south on I-94) usually has the cheapest fuel in the area, fill up before heading north.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Benton Heights?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can. Michigan State Parks like Warren Dunes and Van Buren open reservations six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system, and prime July and August Friday-to-Saturday sites can sell out within minutes. Private campgrounds like Weko Beach and Dune Lake often open 9 to 12 months ahead. Midweek and shoulder season (May, September, October), you can often grab a site 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 8:00 a.m. six months before your target date, log into midnrreservations.com a few minutes early, and have your preferred site numbers picked out in advance.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Benton Heights?
Driving an RV around Benton Heights is straightforward. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, I-94 and US-31 are wide and well-maintained, and there are no mountain passes or significant grades. Watch for summer Friday afternoon traffic heading to Lake Michigan beaches, and lake-effect snow squalls from November through March, which can reduce visibility quickly. Most state highways have generous shoulders, and downtown St. Joseph has a few low-clearance bluff roads, so stick to designated truck routes in a tall Class A. Pro tip: leave Chicago before 2 p.m. on Fridays to beat the beach rush on I-94.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Benton Heights?
Campgrounds throughout Southwest Michigan are well-equipped. Warren Dunes State Park offers electric hookups on modern sites, a sanitary dump station, and potable water fill-ups. Van Buren State Park has electric hookups and modern restrooms with showers. Private parks like Dune Lake Campground and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Bridgman offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric) on many sites, plus laundry and Wi-Fi. Most state parks have a shared dump station near the exit. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before pulling into a state park site since pads are typically electric-only, and dump on your way out to skip the morning line.

Many hosts also offer delivery and setup as a flat fee plus per-mile rate, the easiest way to skip towing entirely. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Benton Harbor or St. Joseph area, with flexible dropoff windows. Mileage policies vary, look for unlimited mileage if you are heading up to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Pro tip: ask about a dump and refill add-on to save the chore on your final morning.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Benton%20Heights%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV and host), which protects against issues like excessive cleaning, missed dump fees, or mileage overages. Assuming you return the RV in the condition you received it, your deposit is released shortly after the trip. The amount is shown on the listing before booking, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: take dated photos and a short video at pickup and dropoff, and refill propane and fuel to the level noted on your rental agreement to ensure your full deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Benton Heights in the winter?
Yes, and winter can be memorable here. Some RVezy hosts in Benton Heights offer winterized motorhomes for cold-weather trips, perfect for ice fishing on Paw Paw Lake, snowshoeing at Warren Dunes, or seeing the famous St. Joseph lighthouse ice formations along Lake Michigan. Look for listings with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore power compatibility, and ask the host about cold-weather prep before booking. Winter temperatures range from highs near 32 F to lows in the teens, with regular lake-effect snow. Pro tip: book a site with full electric service so you can run the furnace continuously, and pack a heated water hose if you plan to stay connected to city water below freezing.
