Camping near Brooklyn, Michigan
Brooklyn sits in the Irish Hills region of southeast Michigan, a rolling landscape of glacial hills and interconnected lakes across Lenawee, Jackson, and Washtenaw counties. Campgrounds near Brooklyn span from rustic sites with limited amenities to full-service facilities with modern conveniences, across terrain that features rolling hills and multiple inland lakes. The town is best known as the home of Michigan International Speedway, a two-mile oval just south of the village of Brooklyn.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Juniper Hills Campground and Irish Hills Resort Campgrounds sit close to the speedway on US-12, Apple Creek Campground and RV Park and Ja Do Park Campground offer private hookup sites nearby, and Hayes State Park anchors the public-land options on Wamplers and Round lakes.
Michigan International Speedway is the largest registered campground in Michigan, with roughly 1,400 acres and thousands of campsites across multiple lots, which means race weekends and the Faster Horses festival dramatically reshape availability at surrounding parks.
Things to do around Brooklyn
Water dominates the itinerary. The 654-acre Hayes State Park offers a modern campground, a large swimming area, two boating access sites, a fishing pier, trails, picnic areas, and interpretive programs, with opportunities for boating, paddling, fishing, and camping. Wamplers Lake is an all-sports lake known for largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill, while the no-wake Round Lake is a kettle lake popular for pan fishing.
Off the water, US-12 is the main sightseeing corridor, with Michigan International Speedway, Hidden Lake Gardens, antique stores, wineries, and golf all within reach. Cambridge Junction Historic State Park is home to the Walker Tavern Historic Site, and Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve offers a quiet setting for wildlife viewing and hiking.
For motorsports fans, MIS hosts NASCAR race weekends in June and August, plus the Faster Horses country music festival in July.

The Brooklyn camping season runs roughly late April through mid-October, matching most private campgrounds in the Irish Hills. Hayes State Park operates a modern campground with electric hookups, and most private parks in the area operate seasonally with peak availability from May through October. Spring and fall bring mild weather and colorful scenery, summer is busy and warm, and winter typically closes modern camping facilities.
Summer is the most volatile stretch for booking. The NASCAR Cup Series race weekend in June, the second Cup weekend in August, and the mid-July Faster Horses Festival draw large crowds to Brooklyn, and campgrounds within a 20-minute radius fill months ahead of those dates.
Shoulder-season trips in May, early June, September, and early October generally offer easier bookings, cooler nights, and better fishing on Wamplers and Round lakes. Ice fishing draws local anglers in winter, though most campgrounds are closed.

How to book a site near Brooklyn
Hayes State Park uses the Michigan DNR reservation system. Campsites, lodging, and harbors can be reserved up to six months in advance, and shelters up to 12 months in advance. When the booking window opens, inventory becomes available Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
Private campgrounds such as Juniper Hills Campground, Irish Hills Resort Campgrounds, Apple Creek Campground and RV Park, and Ja Do Park Campground book directly through each property. For NASCAR weekends and Faster Horses, book as soon as festival and race dates are announced, since inventory near the track is limited.
Larger RVs over 40 feet may find limited suitable sites at Hayes, so check site specifications when booking a bigger rig.
What to expect on the ground
Site styles vary widely. Family-oriented campgrounds predominate, with amenities ranging from basic primitive sites to full-service facilities with electric hookups, modern bathhouses, and recreational features. Swimming beaches, fishing opportunities, and boat launches are frequent highlights, and most established campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, with water and electric hookups available at select locations.
At Hayes State Park, the modern campground is set along Round Lake and is divided into west and east loops, with 180 campsites plus mini cabins and tiny houses. Every site has electric hookups, sites include fire pits and tables, and amenities include a fishing pier, dog run, playground, and organized activities. Outer loop sites tend to be more wooded and shaded, while some inner sites sit in full sun.
Check-in for camping is 3 p.m. with checkout at 1 p.m., and quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Summer highs in the Irish Hills sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid-80s F (June to August), with warm lake water great for swimming at Wamplers Lake. Winters drop into the 20s with regular snow, and most local campgrounds (including Hayes State Park modern loops) close from late October through April. Insider tip: target the two weeks after Labor Day for warm days, cool nights, and your pick of waterfront sites at Hayes.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Brooklyn?
You are going to do great, and Brooklyn is honestly one of the easier places in Michigan to learn. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to the propane stove to dumping the tanks. Rural roads around Brooklyn like US-12 and M-50 are wide, straight, and lightly trafficked outside race weekends, perfect for getting your feet under you. Smaller Class C motorhomes and Class B campervans drive a lot like a tall pickup truck. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery to Hayes State Park or your MIS campsite so your very first miles behind the wheel are zero miles, and you can just enjoy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Brooklyn RV trip?
You are never on your own out there. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's make, model, and VIN at pickup so any service call goes faster, and you are back to the campfire sooner.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Brooklyn, MI?
An RV road trip from Brooklyn opens up some of the Midwest's best driving. Top picks: cruise the Heritage Route US-12 west to Warren Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan (about 2.5 hours, 140 miles); head north to Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes (4 to 5 hours, 250 miles); loop the 'thumb' through Port Huron and Frankenmuth (3 hours, 180 miles); or drop south to Hocking Hills, Ohio (3.5 hours, 200 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada via the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron is allowed with many hosts (Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals). Pro tip: message the host before booking a cross-border trip so they can confirm insurance coverage extends into Ontario.
michigan.org/article/trip-idea/us-12-heritage-trailWhat is the realistic fuel cost for an RV trip around Brooklyn?
Easy to budget for. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Regular gas in the Brooklyn and Jackson County area generally runs close to the Michigan statewide average, and you will find convenient fill-ups along US-12 and in nearby Brooklyn and Jackson. For a typical 3-night Irish Hills weekend with 150 miles of driving, plan roughly $50 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Brooklyn or Jackson before heading deeper into the state parks, where gas stations thin out fast.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Brooklyn, MI?
The earlier the better, especially for the Irish Hills hot spots. W.J. Hayes State Park opens reservations 6 months in advance through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com (or 1-800-44-PARKS), and prime weekend sites for July and August often go within hours of release. Michigan International Speedway camping for NASCAR weekends and the Faster Horses Festival in July sells out months in advance through mispeedway.com. For midweek summer trips or September shoulder season, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually fine. Pro tip: a Michigan Recreation Passport is required for state park vehicle entry (a modest annual fee for Michigan-plated vehicles or a small daily fee for non-resident vehicles), grab one when you reserve.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Brooklyn and the Irish Hills?
Driving here is genuinely relaxing compared to most of Michigan. The Irish Hills around Brooklyn feature gentle rolling terrain along US-12 and M-50, two-lane country highways with good shoulders and minimal stoplights, which is ideal for a motorhome rental Brooklyn first-timers can handle confidently. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Lenawee and Jackson counties have high crossings) and slow down on the curves near Hidden Lake Gardens. Race weekends at MIS bring heavy traffic on US-12 and M-50, so plan to arrive Thursday or early Friday. Winter (December to March) brings snow and ice, which is why most local rentals are seasonal. Insider tip: avoid driving big rigs through downtown Brooklyn at school dismissal time on Main Street.

Old US-12 Campground on US-12 has full hookup sites (water, electric, sewer) and a bath house. MIS campgrounds range from full-hookup Turn 2 areas to dry-camping Infield sites with shared restrooms. For dumping en route, the Hayes State Park sanitation station is a regional favorite. Pro tip: fill fresh water before pulling into any MIS infield site, hookups are limited and the party never stops.

Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, awning, and a generator, which is huge for dry camping in the MIS Infield. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, generator, and a linen kit, then you literally just show up at the campsite with a cooler and your flip-flops.

To avoid issues: do the walk-through video at pickup, treat the rig like your own, and refuel and dump tanks before drop-off (or pay the host's flat fee to handle it). Pro tip: communicate any small bumps right away in the RVezy app, transparency keeps deposits smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs RV camping near Brooklyn good for families?
