Campgrounds and RV parks near Brownlee Park, MI

Fort Custer Recreation Area is the main outdoor draw. The park has three lakes, the Kalamazoo River, more than 40 miles of trails, a swimming beach at Eagle Lake, and boat rentals including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. The trail network is used by mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers, and, in winter, dog sledders, and the park also has an 18-hole disc golf course. Closer to Brownlee Park itself, the North Country Trail passes through the area and links into the Calhoun County Trailway and Iron Belle Trail system, connecting to Battle Creek's Linear Park. Camp Turkeyville adds on-site heated swimming pools, a kids' splash pool, sand volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, a fishing pond, and the adjacent Cornwell's Turkeyville dinner theatre and ice cream parlour for evenings off the road.

Southwest Michigan runs on a humid continental cycle, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Peak camping season stretches from late May through Labor Day, when state park loops and private resorts fill quickly on weekends and holidays. Modern loops at Fort Custer routinely sell out for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends, so booking well ahead is essential for those windows. Shoulder season, roughly April into mid-May and again from Labor Day through mid-October, brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier availability. Camp Turkeyville operates from April 1 through October 31 for its main season, with a smaller number of full-hookup winter sites also available. Fort Custer's modern campground is open year-round. Winter camping is possible at Fort Custer for self-contained rigs, but expect limited services, frozen spigots, and snow on trails. Alcohol is not permitted anywhere in Fort Custer from April 1 through Labor Day unless a written event permit has been issued by the park manager.

Fort Custer's campground has 219 modern sites with 20 and 30-amp electric hookups and a small number of 50-amp sites, but no full hookups. There is one dump station and potable water is available at fill stations rather than at the site. Modern restrooms and showers are on-site, along with rustic vault toilets, and lodging includes tent sites, RV sites, cabins, and yurts. Standard state park rules apply: quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., pets must be on a six-foot leash, and only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed. Camp Turkeyville sits on roughly 14 acres with full-hookup sites, 20, 30, and 50-amp service, pull-throughs sized for larger rigs, concrete patios, laundry, WiFi, a general store, and heated pools. Expect a family-oriented resort atmosphere rather than a wilderness setting.
