Camping near Buchanan, Michigan
Buchanan sits in Berrien County in the southwest corner of Michigan, close to the Indiana border and roughly 20 miles inland from Lake Michigan. The location puts campers within a short drive of Warren Dunes State Park and Lake Michigan beaches. The area is part of the Michigan fruit belt, with wineries, orchards, and the St. Joseph River shaping the landscape RV travelers will drive through.
Campground options range from private resort-style parks to a large state park on the lakeshore. Bear Cave RV Campground sits on the St. Joseph River just north of town, with 135 sites, and typically operates from April 15 through October 15. Fullers Resort and Campground on Clear Lake and Spaulding Lake Campground both offer full-hookup family sites on smaller inland lakes, while Mustang Sally's Park provides another local option near Buchanan.
For lakefront dune camping, Warren Dunes State Park covers 1,500 acres along Lake Michigan, with a dune formation rising 260 feet above the lake, three miles of shoreline, and six miles of hiking trails.
Things to do around Buchanan
Lake Michigan beaches and dune hikes are the main draw. Easy access to the dunes at Warren Dunes State Park makes it a popular location for sandboarding, and the park also allows swimming, hiking, and, with a permit, hang gliding from the tallest dunes. Dogs are allowed on the beach north of the third parking lot.
Inland, the St. Joseph River offers fishing and paddling directly from Bear Cave RV Campground, which sits on the river with a boat launch, docks, and swimming access. Fullers Resort and Campground on Clear Lake offers lake swimming for families, and Spaulding Lake Campground has stocked fishing ponds and a spring-fed swimming lake on site.
Off-site, campers can visit Fernwood Botanical Garden, tour Southwest Michigan wine trail vineyards, or make the short drive to South Bend for the University of Notre Dame and city amenities.

Shoulder seasons bring cooler nights but fewer crowds. Spring tends to be wet, with mid-winter through early spring being the wettest time of year and autumn the driest at the nearest long-term climate station in South Bend. Fall delivers color along the St. Joseph River, and Warren Dunes State Park is open year-round for day use, though most private campgrounds close for winter.

We had a great rental experience with Jared & this RV. Trailer was clean & well equipped. We had no issues at all on our trip, but I was confident I was going to be able to get a hold of our host if we had any questions or concerns. Would definitely trust to rent from him again!
jeremy C. - Oct 2026
Excellent camper! Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Jared dropped off and set up the camper for us so it was ready when we got there, great communication throughout the rental. We had issues with the generator and Jared came out to help figure out the issue and try to get it started again. When he wasn't able to fix it he ran out and got a new generator so we wouldn't be stranded all weekend without one. Definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking for a stress free camping experience :-)

How to book a campsite near Buchanan
Warren Dunes State Park is run by the Michigan DNR. Reservations for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors, and picnic shelters can be made at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to all Michigan state parks, and camping fees are separate. Book as soon as the six-month rolling window opens for summer weekends.
Private campgrounds book directly. Bear Cave RV Campground is part of the Thousand Trails network and takes reservations through its site or front desk. Fullers Resort and Campground on Clear Lake, Spaulding Lake Campground, and Mustang Sally's Park all handle bookings directly through the operators, and popular sites for holiday weekends fill well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Buchanan are generally wooded and level, with a mix of pull-throughs and back-ins. Spaulding Lake Campground accommodates all RV types with 20, 30, and 50-amp electric, full water and sewer connections, level pull-throughs for big rigs, laundry, RV storage, Wi-Fi, firewood, and grills. Bear Cave RV Campground offers 30 and 50-amp service with a mix of full-hookup and electric-water sites, plus an on-site dump station.
Warren Dunes has two campgrounds: Mt. Randall Modern, which offers electric sites and some 50-amp service, and Hilldebrandt Semi-Modern, which is more rustic without electrical hookups. Park facilities include a beach house, picnicking, playground, concession store, and cross-country skiing in winter.
Note that the Bear Cave attraction itself is closed indefinitely, so plan visits around the campground amenities rather than the cave tour.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Buchanan, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Buchanan, MI?
Renting an RV in Buchanan is affordable compared to large metro areas. On RVezy you will typically see travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs from $200 to $350 per night, with peak rates during the RedBud Pro Motocross weekend in early July. To find a cheap RV rental Buchanan travelers love, book midweek, target shoulder season in late April or September, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: hosts in nearby Niles and Berrien Springs often have lower nightly rates and will still deliver to Buchanan campgrounds, so widening your search radius by about 15 miles can unlock real savings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Buchanan%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Buchanan, Michigan?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Buchanan, Michigan. The Michigan Secretary of State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans available on RVezy. To rent on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old and complete identity verification through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward Michigan makes it, so you can focus on the fun part: planning the route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Buchanan covered if something happens?
Yes, every RV rental in Buchanan booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind on rural roads or busy weekends near RedBud MX. At checkout you choose your protection tier based on the deductible and coverage level you want, and coverage applies from pickup through drop-off. Pro tip: if you are traveling with kids or towing for the first time, upgrading the tier usually costs just a few dollars more per night and lets you relax instead of worrying about a stray branch on a wooded site.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Buchanan RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy that applies to every rental, rather than each host choosing their own. There is a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. Because the policy is platform-wide, you will not see a separate cancellation policy on each listing. If your host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. Pro tip: reserve your Bear Cave RV Resort or Warren Dunes site early, then lock in the RV right after, knowing RVezy's cancellation policy has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Buchanan?
Absolutely, and Buchanan is a dream for dog owners. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see a pet-friendly RV rental Buchanan hosts have approved for furry passengers, often with a small cleaning fee around $25 to $75. Once you arrive, head straight to Buchanan's Field of Dreams Dog Park for off-leash time, or hit the wooded trails at McCoy's Creek Park where dogs are welcome on leash. Warren Dunes State Park, just 25 minutes away, allows leashed pets on most beaches and trails too. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules, and pack a towel for sandy paws after Lake Michigan.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/parks/warren-dunesCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Buchanan?
Yes, RV delivery is one of the easiest ways to start your Buchanan trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up the RV at Bear Cave RV Resort, Fuller's Resort on Clear Lake, or even your private driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set by the host and often scale with distance, with some offering free delivery within a short radius. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see your options instantly. Pro tip: delivery is gold for the RedBud Motocross weekend because parking and maneuvering near the track gets tight, so let the host handle the hard part.

Late May through early October is prime time, with the absolute sweet spot being mid-June to late September. Summer highs in Buchanan sit in the low 80s°F with cool 60°F nights perfect for campfires, while Lake Michigan tempers the worst of the heat. September and early October bring 65 to 75°F days and spectacular fall color, especially around Mount Tabor Trails and along the St. Joseph River. Spring (April to mid-May) is quieter and cheaper but expect rain. Pro tip: book your Buchanan RV trip for the third weekend in September if you want warm days, no bugs, fall leaves just starting, and easy campground availability all in one shot.
weather.gov/iwx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Buchanan a good place to start?
Buchanan is genuinely one of the friendliest places in Michigan for a first time renting an RV (it was even named Reader's Digest's Nicest Place in America). Roads are wide, traffic is light, and most campgrounds are within 30 minutes of pickup. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, electric hookups, the awning, and dumping the tanks. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions. Choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first run, both easy to handle. Pro tip: do your first night at Bear Cave RV Resort, only 10 minutes from downtown Buchanan, so you can practice setup close to support.
michigan.gov/sos/all-services/driver-educationWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Buchanan includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. One phone call gets help dispatched, even late at night during a busy RedBud weekend. Your host is also a direct line for questions about quirks specific to their RV, like how the awning retracts or where the fuse box lives, and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the pickup, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate for faster service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Buchanan RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to crossing into Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and beyond, which is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Buchanan. You're only 5 miles from the Indiana border and 90 miles from Chicago, so multi-state itineraries are easy and fully covered by your RVezy protection. Canada trips are allowed with most hosts but require advance approval and may need extra documentation, so message the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage stops at the border. Pro tip: a classic loop from Buchanan heads west through Indiana Dunes National Park, up Chicago's lakefront, then north into Wisconsin's Door County, all easy interstate driving.
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Buchanan RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but Buchanan's central location keeps it reasonable. Expect 7 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, and 12 to 18 MPG for campervans or trucks towing trailers. Gas in Berrien County typically runs slightly below the Michigan state average. For a 4-night trip with 400 miles of driving in a Class C, plan on $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Buchanan or Niles before heading to Warren Dunes or Chicago, where prices jump 30 to 50 cents per gallon. Use GasBuddy en route, and never let the tank drop below a quarter on rural stretches near Cass County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Buchanan?
For Michigan state parks like Warren Dunes, book 6 months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system (midnrreservations.com), especially for July and August weekends which sell out within hours of opening. Private parks like Bear Cave RV Resort and Fuller's Resort take reservations 3 to 6 months ahead and fill quickly for holiday weekends. Midweek summer stays and any shoulder-season dates are often available 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: if Warren Dunes is full, set up at Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman or Dune Lake Campground in Coloma. Both have openings more often and put you on the same Lake Michigan shoreline within a 25-minute drive.
midnrreservations.com/What's driving an RV around Buchanan actually like?
Easy, honestly. Buchanan sits in flat-to-gently-rolling Southwest Michigan farmland with two-lane state highways (M-139, US-12) and quick interstate access via I-94. There are no mountain passes, no tight switchbacks, and very few low bridges to worry about. The main thing to watch is summer thunderstorms (June to August can bring sudden downpours) and occasional lake-effect snow from November through March if you're winter camping. Avoid taking large Class A rigs through the narrow historic downtown on Front Street; stick to Red Bud Trail and M-51. Pro tip: the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90) just south is the fastest route to Chicago and easy in any RV; have $15 to $25 in cash or an E-ZPass ready.
michigan.gov/mdot/travelWhat amenities do campgrounds near Buchanan offer?
Most campgrounds near Buchanan are full-service. Bear Cave RV Resort, Fuller's Resort, and St. Joe River RV Park offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, dump stations, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Warren Dunes State Park has electric-only sites with a modern dump station near the entrance and potable water fills at multiple spigots. Most also have heated pools, playgrounds, and camp stores for last-minute propane and ice. For where to park an RV in Buchanan overnight without a campground, Cracker Barrel in Niles and the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo allow free overnight RV parking with permission. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any campground because rural fill stations are sparse heading north.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Buchanan?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Buchanan guests book sleeps 4 to 8 people and comes fully equipped: queen bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave, stovetop, sink, indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, and seatbelts for travel. Most also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Many hosts throw in linens, towels, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs. Wi-Fi varies; some include a mobile hotspot, others rely on campground Wi-Fi or your phone's tethering. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities list carefully and message the host if you need specifics like a coffee maker or kids' booster seats, most are happy to accommodate.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsWhat add-ons can I get with my Buchanan RV rental?
Hosts love to make your trip turnkey. Common add-ons for a campervan rental Buchanan or motorhome trip include bike racks, kayaks or SUPs (perfect for the St. Joseph River), portable grills, generators, bedding packages, camp chairs, and outdoor rugs, typically $10 to $40 per item per trip. Pickup is usually at the host's home or driveway, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Drop-off is at the same location unless you've arranged delivery. Most hosts allow 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles billed at $0.30 to $0.50. Pro tip: ask about a fishing gear add-on because the St. Joseph River near Buchanan is a top smallmouth bass and northern pike spot in Southwest Michigan.
michigan.gov/dnr/managing-resources/fisheriesHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly with a credit card at booking, with no cash or off-platform transfers. The total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen renter protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup rather than charged, and it is released after drop-off assuming there is no damage or excess mileage. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior and exterior at both pickup and drop-off. It takes five minutes and is the single best way to make sure your deposit is released without issues.
