Camping near Burr Oak, Michigan
Burr Oak is a small village in St. Joseph County in southern Michigan, roughly an hour south of Kalamazoo and close to the Indiana state line. The village had a population of 753 as of the 2020 census. The surrounding countryside is farmland dotted with small kettle lakes and stretches of the St. Joseph River watershed, which shapes most of the recreation in the area.
RV renters typically use Burr Oak as a low-key base for lake fishing, paddling, and quiet family camping. Private RV parks handle most of the overnight demand, since the nearest Michigan state park campgrounds sit farther north and west. Options within a short drive include Hidden Pond Campground, Green Valley Campground, En Gedi Campground River Resort, En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery, and Twin Mills Camping Resort just across the Indiana border.
Expect flat terrain, pull-through and back-in sites at the private resorts, and easy road access from US-12 and M-66. The area works well for first-time RV renters who want to avoid mountain grades or heavy traffic.
Things to do around Burr Oak
Water is the main draw. The St. Joseph River runs through the county and supports canoeing, kayaking, and tubing, with liveries such as En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery renting boats and running shuttles. Inland lakes hold bass, bluegill, pike, and walleye, and small public launches are common throughout St. Joseph County.
Families staying at Twin Mills Camping Resort or Hidden Pond Campground can spend most of a trip on-site, since larger resorts typically offer pools, playgrounds, mini-golf, and organized weekend activities. Off-site, day trips reach the Amish farm country around Shipshewana, Indiana, the shops in downtown Sturgis, and the trails and beaches at Lake Michigan roughly two hours west.

The camping season in this part of southern Michigan runs from about mid-April through mid-October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summers are long and warm, and winters are freezing, snowy, and windy. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures and the fullest campgrounds; holiday weekends at private resorts like Twin Mills Camping Resort and Green Valley Campground can fill months in advance.
Late spring is unpredictable. March averages a high near 44°F with lows near 30°F, and April climbs to about 56°F with lows near 34°F. Nights can still drop below freezing into early May, so RV renters should confirm the campground has water turned on before booking a shoulder-season trip.
September and early October are strong choices for quieter stays, mild days, and fall color along the river corridors. Most private parks stay open through mid-October, then shut water off and close for the winter.

We had a great rental experience with Jared & this RV. Trailer was clean & well equipped. We had no issues at all on our trip, but I was confident I was going to be able to get a hold of our host if we had any questions or concerns. Would definitely trust to rent from him again!
jeremy C. - Oct 2026
Excellent camper! Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Jared dropped off and set up the camper for us so it was ready when we got there, great communication throughout the rental. We had issues with the generator and Jared came out to help figure out the issue and try to get it started again. When he wasn't able to fix it he ran out and got a new generator so we wouldn't be stranded all weekend without one. Definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking for a stress free camping experience :-)

Met our expectations and more. Just needed additional sleeping space at our lake property and this Airstream was just perfect. I highly recommend using Christoph for your next at home or on the road RV adventure.

How to book near Burr Oak
Private campgrounds around Burr Oak, including Hidden Pond Campground, Green Valley Campground, and the two En Gedi properties, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and any stay tied to a holiday should be booked well ahead, ideally by late winter. Twin Mills Camping Resort in northern Indiana uses its own reservation system and often requires minimum-night stays on holiday weekends.
If a trip includes a side visit to a Michigan state park campground, plan around the DNR calendar. The state allows campsite, lodging, and harbor reservations up to six months in advance, and shelters up to twelve months in advance. Anyone driving into a Michigan state park or state forest needs a Recreation Passport, which can be added when registering a vehicle or purchased at the park entrance.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Burr Oak are two-lane rural highways with easy grades and light traffic, which suits larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs. Cell coverage is generally good on the main routes but can weaken on backroads near river bottoms and wooded parcels.
Private resorts in the area usually offer full hookups, dump stations, laundry, and camp stores, while smaller family-run campgrounds may be water and electric only with a shared dump station. Sites tend to be grass or gravel rather than paved, and shaded lots fill first, so requesting site type at booking is worth the extra step.
Bring bug spray from June through August, since mosquitoes are common near the river and wetland edges. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with Michigan rules aimed at limiting the spread of invasive pests.

Rural St. Joseph County has wide country roads, low traffic, and easy campgrounds, far more forgiving than learning in a big city. Pro tip: book a travel trailer or Class C for your first trip and consider delivery, you will skip the driving learning curve entirely.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burr%20Oak%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?

A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip, the exact amount is listed on each rig and typically varies based on the RV's size and value. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you got it, the deposit is released back to you after your trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff. It is the easiest way to avoid any deposit disputes and most hosts genuinely appreciate it.

Class B campervans drive much like an oversized van, fit in any standard parking spot, get 15 to 20 mpg, and still include a bed, small kitchen, and often a wet bath. They are ideal for quick weekend hops to Warren Dunes (about 75 miles west), Indiana's Pokagon State Park (about 45 miles south), or a wine-tasting loop through southwestern Michigan. Pro tip: campervans are in highest demand June through August, so if you have your eye on one for summer, book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead.
