Campgrounds near Byron, Michigan
Byron is a small village in Shiawassee County in southeast Michigan, sitting on the Shiawassee River between Lansing and Flint and roughly an hour from metro Detroit. The surrounding area is gently rolling farmland with hardwood stands, small lakes, and the winding Shiawassee River, which passes through the village of Byron on its way north toward Saginaw Bay. It is a practical base for RV travelers who want quiet rural camping within easy reach of I-69 and US-23.
Most overnight options near Byron are privately owned, family-run RV parks rather than state or federal campgrounds. Walnut Hills Family Campground and Hide Away Park Campground sit closest to the village, with Holiday Shores RV Park, Water's Edge Camp & Conference Center, and Taylor's Beach Campground rounding out the nearby choices. Amenities commonly include electric and water hookups, swim areas, playgrounds, and river or pond access.
For travelers who also want state land, Holly State Recreation Area lies within an hour's drive to the southeast and adds hiking, mountain biking, and larger lakes to the trip plan.
Things to do near Byron
Water activities dominate the area. The Shiawassee River runs directly past Walnut Hills Family Campground, which partners with an on-site canoe livery for float trips and features a swimming lake with a floating water park, sand volleyball, playgrounds, and a beach. Kayaking, tubing, and warm-water fishing for bass, bluegill, and pike are common on the river and on the small lakes at other nearby parks. The Shiawassee River holds more than sixty fish species, and fly fishing is popular in stretches near Byron.
Off the water, families can drive to Holly State Recreation Area for mountain biking and hiking. Durand Union Station, a preserved railroad depot and museum, sits minutes from Byron and is an easy rainy-day stop.
For day trips, downtown Flint, the Sloan Museum, and Genesee County parks are all within a short drive.

December - February
32° / 19°F 49 mmCold and snowy; most private campgrounds closed.
Camping season in this part of Michigan is concentrated between mid-May and mid-October. Michigan state campground licensing rules limit continuous private-park operation, so RV parks around Byron typically shut down through the coldest months and reopen in spring. Confirm exact opening and closing dates directly with each campground before booking a shoulder-season trip.
Summer is peak season. July and August weekends fill quickly at family-oriented parks with water features, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day often sell out weeks in advance. Reserve early if traveling with children.
Spring brings cool nights, muddy trails, and higher river flows that are good for paddling but cold for swimming. Fall offers hardwood color through late September and October, thinner crowds, and cooler nights that suit RV heat systems. Late fall camping is possible but limited by campground closures and the risk of early snow.

How to book near Byron
Private campgrounds around Byron take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and several also list availability through third-party platforms such as Campspot, The Dyrt, and Good Sam. Deposits are commonly collected at the time of booking, and cancellation windows vary, so read each park's policy before confirming.
For Michigan state parks in the wider region, including Holly State Recreation Area, reservations are handled through the Michigan DNR at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Sites can be booked up to six months ahead of arrival on a rolling window, and popular weekends fill within minutes of opening. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Michigan state parks, state forest campgrounds, and boating access sites.
Book holiday weekends and prime lakeside sites several months out, especially for larger rigs that need pull-through or 50-amp service.
What to expect on site
Private RV parks near Byron generally offer a mix of water-and-electric, full-hookup, and tent sites on grassy pads, with 30-amp service standard and 50-amp available at select sites. Walnut Hills Family Campground stretches along the Shiawassee River with a mix of RV, tent, cabin, and seasonal sites, an on-site camp store, showers, flush toilets, and a swimming lake with a floating water park. Roughly half the sites at Walnut Hills are held by seasonal campers, so transient availability tightens on summer weekends.
Most parks are pet-friendly on leash and limit fires to designated rings. Michigan restricts moving firewood between regions to slow the spread of invasive pests, and some parks such as Walnut Hills require firewood to be purchased on site. Cellular coverage is generally reliable on the major carriers. Rural roads to some parks are narrow, so plan daylight arrivals for first-time visits with a large rig.

You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and we'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Booking is low-risk. Cancellation terms are not displayed on individual listings, so review the policy details on the RVezy Help Center before you book. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans stay on track. If your dates shift, message your host first, many are happy to adjust. Pro tip: book early for summer weekends along the Shiawassee River, since the best Byron rigs go fast for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

That means zero stress about towing or backing in, you just show up and start your campfire. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, so closer campgrounds cost less. Summer highs run 78 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with warm evenings, perfect for grilling outside your motorhome rental in Byron. September brings 65 to 75 degree days and far fewer mosquitoes, and early October delivers stunning fall color along the Shiawassee River and across Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Winters in Byron are cold (often 15 to 30 degrees with snow), so most rentals run April through October. Pro tip: book the third weekend in September for the best mix of warm days, cool sleeping weather, and golden maple leaves on country drives.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Byron?
You'll do great, Byron is one of the easier places in Michigan to learn. Country roads like M-71, Silver Lake Road, and Lovejoy Road are wide, flat, and low-traffic, with far less stop-and-go than driving in Detroit or Grand Rapids. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, water systems, propane, generator, and dump valves, so you're never left guessing. If you're nervous about driving altogether, choose a Class B campervan rental in Byron or a smaller Class C, both handle like an oversized van. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on quiet roads near the village before heading to your campground.

Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick how-to questions, like resetting the GFCI outlet or relighting the water heater. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway, just in case you lose signal in rural areas.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I cross into Canada with my Byron RV rental?
Cross-border trips into Ontario are possible from Byron (the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron is only about 90 minutes east), but you'll need permission first. Message the host directly from the listing page before booking and confirm both the host and their insurance allow Canadian travel; many do for trips to places like Niagara Falls, Toronto, or Algonquin Provincial Park. You'll need a valid passport or enhanced driver's license for every traveler at the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: the Sarnia crossing is usually faster than Detroit-Windsor on summer weekends, especially early mornings before 9 a.m.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripHow much should I budget for fuel on a Byron, MI RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan. Gas prices in mid-Michigan typically run $3.10 to $3.80 per gallon, and Byron-area stations along M-71 and I-69 are usually a few cents cheaper than metro Detroit. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 16 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer. For a 500-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget about $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Byron or Durand before heading Up North, since prices climb noticeably past West Branch on I-75.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Byron?
For the best sites, plan ahead. Michigan state park campgrounds (Holly Recreation Area, Seven Lakes, Sleepy Hollow, Bay City) open reservations exactly six months in advance through the Michigan DNR's online system at MiDNRReservations.com, and prime summer weekends often sell out within minutes of opening. Private parks like Myers Lake RV Resort in Byron and Timber Wolf Lake Campground typically take bookings 9 to 12 months out for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends. Midweek and shoulder-season stays are far easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: set a phone reminder for the six-month mark and book at 8 a.m. Eastern, exactly when the DNR system refreshes, to snag waterfront sites.
www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Reservations/What are driving conditions like around Byron, Michigan?
Driving conditions around Byron are about as RV-friendly as Michigan gets. The terrain is gently rolling farmland with no mountains, and main routes like I-69, US-23, and M-71 are wide, well-maintained, and have generous shoulders. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Shiawassee County has a very active deer population) and the occasional Amish horse-and-buggy on rural roads east of town. Spring brings pothole season after the freeze-thaw cycle, so drive a touch slower in April. Summer storms can pop up fast, so check the forecast before heading out. Pro tip: avoid the I-69 stretch through Lansing during weekday rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.), and the back roads through Linden and Fenton are scenic alternatives.

You'll find a great mix. Most full-service parks near Byron, including Myers Lake RV Resort and Timber Wolf Lake, offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups right at the site, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, showers, and a camp store. For potable water fills and dump stations on travel days, Holly Recreation Area's dump station off Grange Hall Road is convenient to I-75. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter, since older Michigan state park sites sometimes only offer 30-amp service.

Many Byron-area listings also include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, and outside grill, ideal for relaxing by the Shiawassee River. Wi-Fi varies (some rigs have onboard hotspots), and every seated traveler will have a seatbelt for safe transit. Many hosts offer delivery and setup for a per-mile fee, and some include a tank of propane or a starter sewer kit. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home in or near Byron, with windows typically running 1 to 4 p.m. for pickup and 10 a.m. to noon for return. Pro tip: ask about a starter kit bundle when you message the host, it's often cheaper than buying add-ons individually.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/boatingHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book a Byron RV, RVezy charges your card through the platform for the rental total (nightly rate, service fee, chosen protection plan, and any add-ons), never in cash to the host. The refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment and is placed as a hold on your credit card shortly before pickup, with the amount set on the listing. As long as the rig is returned on time, clean, undamaged, and within the agreed fuel and mileage terms, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take quick walkaround photos and a short video at both pickup and dropoff. It's the easiest way to avoid any deposit disputes and keep everything friendly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best RV road trip destinations from Byron, MI?
Byron's central Lower Peninsula location makes it a perfect launchpad.
