Campgrounds and RV parks near Climax, MI

Water access drives most of the recreation. Fort Custer features three lakes, the Kalamazoo River, a swimming beach on Eagle Lake, boat rentals, and paddling and fishing opportunities, plus second-growth forests and remnant prairie. Mountain bikers and equestrians share portions of the trail system, so plan hikes for early morning if traveling with kids on foot. For river time, the onsite En Gedi Canoe Livery offers canoe, kayak, and tube trips with shuttle service, with multiple trip options on the St. Joseph River ranging from about an hour to a full day. Farther north near Hastings, Michawana Campground has lake access for swimming and paddling, along with a slip and slide, zip line, and disc golf course, which works well for families with older kids.

The prime RV season runs from late May through mid-October. Summer brings warm days, warm lake temperatures, and full operations at private resorts. En Gedi typically opens Memorial Day weekend and closes Labor Day weekend, so trips outside that window need to target state land or a park with a longer season, such as Michawana, which generally runs from early May into early October. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Nights can drop near freezing in April and again by late October, and water systems at many campgrounds are winterized outside the warm months. The campground at Fort Custer Recreation Area is open year round with 219 sites, most offering electric, but the modern bathhouse and site water are shut down through the cold months. Winter camping is possible for self-contained rigs, but expect snow and limited services. Biting insects peak from late May through early July near wetlands and river campsites. Fall color in southwest Michigan typically peaks in mid-October, which overlaps with the last weekends of full amenities at most private parks.

Sites in this part of Michigan tend to be wooded and level, with a mix of pull-through and back-in options. Fort Custer offers modern loops with electric hookups suitable for most rental rigs, along with a small camp store selling firewood, ice, and basic convenience items. Site sizes vary, and a few can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. Private parks near Climax lean family-oriented and often restrict alcohol. En Gedi is an alcohol-free and marijuana-free family campground designed as a safe space for families and children, and Camp Michawana operates as a Christian family campground with weekend chapel services. Bring cash or a card for firewood, and purchase only certified heat-treated firewood locally to avoid moving invasive pests.
