Camping near Coleman, Michigan
Coleman sits in Midland County in central Michigan's Lower Peninsula, roughly a half-hour drive northwest of Midland and a similar distance from Mount Pleasant. The town is surrounded by mixed farmland, river corridors and small inland lakes, which shape the local camping scene: privately run RV parks close to town, and larger resort-style properties near the Isabella Reservation and area waterways.
RV travelers typically choose between two styles of stay. Taylors Lost Haven Campground and Calhoun Campground offer straightforward hookup camping close to Coleman, while Mt Pleasant Resort - Outdoor Adventures and Saginaw Chippewa Campground sit closer to Mount Pleasant and the Soaring Eagle entertainment district. River Valley RV Park adds a river-oriented option for travelers who want water access from their site.
The area works well as a central base. Chippewa Nature Center in Midland spans 1,500 acres of forest, rivers and wetlands with 19 miles of trails used for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and state forest land to the north expands the day-trip radius further.
Things to do around Coleman
Water and trails drive most trip planning. The Tittabawassee and Chippewa river systems support paddling, fishing and shoreline picnics, and the paved Pere Marquette Rail Trail runs for more than 20 miles between Midland and Clare, offering easy family riding close to Coleman. Many visitors pair a morning at Chippewa Nature Center with an afternoon on the rail trail.
Mount Pleasant, about 20 minutes south, adds indoor options for rainy days: the Soaring Eagle casino and waterpark complex, plus restaurants and shopping. Sanford Lake Park features a beach, boat launch, disc golf and a splash pad, giving RV families a low-cost day out near the campgrounds.
Anglers target bass, walleye and panfish on area lakes, while cyclists use the flat rural roads and paved rail trail for easy outings.

The prime RV season runs from mid-May through mid-October. May through September is the most comfortable window, with daytime highs generally in the 60s to low 80s and nights cool enough for a light layer. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day book out first, and mosquitoes are heaviest in June near river campgrounds.
Shoulder season has real advantages. Spring brings mud and cool nights but easy site selection, and fall delivers reliable color through late September and early October along the Chippewa and Tittabawassee corridors. Water temperatures stay swimmable into early September on the shallower inland lakes.
Winter camping in the Coleman area is limited. January is the coldest month, with average highs near 27°F and lows near 16°F, and measurable snowfall typically runs from November through March. Most private RV parks close for the season, though some operators keep a small number of winterized sites open for hunters and ice anglers.
How to book campgrounds near Coleman
Private campgrounds around Coleman, including Taylors Lost Haven Campground, Calhoun Campground and River Valley RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and holiday periods sell out weeks in advance, so booking in late winter or early spring is the safe approach for July and August stays.
Mt Pleasant Resort - Outdoor Adventures and Saginaw Chippewa Campground use their own reservation channels and often require deposits for holiday weekends. For nearby state land, the Michigan DNR accepts campsite, lodging and harbor reservations up to six months ahead of arrival on a rolling window, and most state forest campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Michigan state parks and recreation areas.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Coleman skew toward full or partial hookups, with 30-amp service common and 50-amp available at the larger resort properties. Interior roads are typically gravel, pads are generally level, and mature hardwoods provide shade at most parks. Cell coverage is usable on major carriers but can drop off in wooded river bottoms.
Expect quiet weeknights and busier weekends, with a family-oriented crowd. Firewood is sold on-site at most campgrounds, and Michigan rules discourage moving firewood between counties to limit invasive pests. Grocery runs are easiest in Coleman itself or in Midland and Mount Pleasant.
Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and stable flies, peak from mid-June through July near water. Bring repellent, use screen rooms if available, and plan riverside activities for morning or breezy afternoons.

There's a money-back grace period right after you book, with additional flexibility based on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans aren't left in limbo. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer dates near Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake, knowing you have a window to adjust if life changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Coleman RV rental?
Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Coleman. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers that welcome dogs (some hosts allow cats too). Many charge a small pet cleaning fee that's shown upfront before you book. Once you're on the road, your pup will love the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail running through Midland County, and dogs are welcome on leash at Wilson State Park near Harrison and at most Michigan DNR state forest campgrounds. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out line for campsite hangs, since Michigan state parks require leashes no longer than six feet.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/camping/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Coleman?
Yes, RV delivery in Coleman is widely available and it's the easiest way to start your trip, especially if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will drop the RV at your campsite at Wilson State Park, Herrick Recreation Area, or a private park near Mt. Pleasant, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. To find delivery-ready listings, use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check the host's delivery radius and per-mile fee on the listing page. For Coleman travelers booking a campervan rental, ask your host about a meet-up near the Coleman exit off US-10 to save on delivery distance.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coleman,MichiganHow far can I drive on my Coleman RV rental?
You have real room to roam. Each Coleman host sets their own mileage policy, and you'll see it clearly on the listing page before you book, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available for a small per-mile fee. Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a longer Michigan loop. From Coleman, it's about 25 miles to Midland, 35 miles to Mt. Pleasant, 130 miles to Traverse City, 175 miles to Mackinaw City, and 165 miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Pro tip: if you're planning a big RV road trip from Coleman up to the Upper Peninsula, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coleman,MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Coleman, MI?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Coleman include Wilson State Park in Harrison (about 20 miles north, with electric sites along Budd Lake), Herrick Recreation Area in Midland County (quiet, wooded sites along the Pine River), and Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park near Mt. Pleasant (full hookups plus casino and waterpark access). Northbound, River Valley RV Park near Newaygo and Higgins Lake State Park are also popular pairings for Coleman trips. For RV camping Coleman families love, Wilson State Park's swim beach is a classic. Pro tip: reserve Wilson State Park up to six months ahead through Michigan DNR for prime July and August weekends.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Coleman?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for a Coleman RV trip, with daytime highs typically in the upper 70s to mid-80s F and warm nights perfect for campfires. May and early June bring greener forests and fewer mosquitoes, while late September and early October light up Midland County with fall color along the Chippewa and Tittabawassee Rivers. Winters in Coleman are genuinely cold, with January lows often in the single digits and heavy snow, so most local hosts pause bookings from mid-November through March. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips in mid-September often score 15 to 20% lower nightly rates and wide-open campground availability at Wilson State Park.
weather.gov/dtx/Can I rent an RV in Coleman during winter?
Winter RV rental in Coleman is possible, but limited. A handful of hosts keep four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power-ready furnaces available from November through March, ideal for ice fishing on Wixom Lake or snowmobiling the mid-Michigan trail system. If you're booking a cold-weather trip, message the host directly through the listing to confirm the RV is winterized for active use (not just storage) and that propane and tanks are ready for sub-freezing nights. Most state park campgrounds in the area close in late October, but Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park near Mt. Pleasant stays open year-round with full hookups, making it a reliable winter basecamp.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/winter-activitiesI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Coleman?
You'll do great, and Coleman is one of the easier places in Michigan to learn. The roads around town (US-10, M-18, Saginaw Road) are flat, well-marked, and rarely congested, so first-time renters can ease into driving without big-city stress. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the leveling system, slide-outs, water and propane, and dump procedures. You can also message your host before booking with any questions. Pro tip: for your first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet), and ask the host about delivery to your campground so you can skip the towing learning curve entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during the trip?
You're never on your own. Every Coleman RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-10, a battery issue at Wilson State Park, or a tow need outside Mt. Pleasant is one phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch help, jump-starts, fuel delivery, or tire service across mid-Michigan, including remote stretches near the Huron-Manistee National Forest. RVezy support is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need to coordinate with your host. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can give roadside the exact info fast if you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Coleman, MI?
Coleman's central location makes it a perfect launchpad for a Michigan RV road trip. From Coleman, popular routes include north to Higgins Lake and Hartwick Pines State Park (about 60 miles, towering old-growth pines), northwest to Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 165 miles of inland lakes and wineries), north to Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge (about 175 miles), east to the Lake Huron shoreline at Tawas Point State Park (about 90 miles), and west to Ludington State Park on Lake Michigan (about 120 miles). Pro tip: if you're heading across the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula, check current high-wind advisories on the Mackinac Bridge Authority site, big rigs sometimes get held back during gusts.
mackinacbridge.org/traveler-information/Can I drive a Coleman RV rental into Canada?
Cross-border travel from Coleman into Canada (typically via the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron, about 115 miles east) is possible on some RVezy listings, but it must be approved by the host in advance because insurance coverage needs to be confirmed for travel outside the U.S. Message the host directly from the listing page before booking to ask about Canada travel, and have your passport ready at the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, since the protection plan and insurance do not extend there. Pro tip: if Canada is on your wish list, search for hosts who explicitly mention cross-border travel in their listing description to speed up approval.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Coleman RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your RV trip budget, but it's manageable. Class B campervans around Coleman get about 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A or large travel-trailer setups land closer to 7 to 10 mpg. Mid-Michigan gas prices typically track close to the state average, with stations in Coleman, Clare, and Mt. Pleasant being convenient fill-up points. For a 300-mile loop from Coleman to Traverse City and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $110 to $150 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Clare before heading north on US-127, prices can climb noticeably once you pass Grayling.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Coleman?
For peak summer (July, August, and Labor Day weekend), book Michigan state park sites up to six months in advance, the exact day they open is the gold standard for places like Wilson State Park, Higgins Lake State Park, and Tawas Point. Reservations are handled through the Michigan DNR's official system at midnrreservations.com, with a 6-month rolling booking window. Private parks like Soaring Eagle Hideaway accept reservations directly through their websites, and 3 to 4 months ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday or Monday) in late August often unlock waterfront sites that are tough to grab on weekends, especially around the Tittabawassee River.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Coleman?
Driving an RV around Coleman is genuinely relaxed compared to most of Michigan. US-10 runs east-west right through town with wide shoulders and easy RV-friendly exits, and M-18 north toward Gladwin is a smooth two-lane through farmland and forest. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along Saginaw Road and county routes near Herrick Recreation Area. Winter brings real snow and occasional ice from late November through March, so most RV trips stick to May through October. Pro tip: avoid I-75 northbound on Friday afternoons in July, Detroit-to-Up North traffic stacks up fast. Take US-127 north out of Clare for a quieter, scenic alternative.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat hookups and amenities will I find at Coleman-area campgrounds?
Most campgrounds near Coleman offer solid RV infrastructure. Wilson State Park has modern sites with 30/50 amp electric and water access, plus a central dump station and potable water fill, but no individual sewer hookups. Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Park near Mt. Pleasant offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp) at every site, along with Wi-Fi, a pool, and laundry. Many private parks along the Tittabawassee River feature full hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings at pull-through sites. Pro tip: if your rig has a black tank, plan to dump at Wilson State Park's dump station on your way out, or stop at a Michigan rest area with a public dump and fresh-water fill open seasonally.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's included inside a typical Coleman RV rental?
Most motorhome rental Coleman listings come fully equipped and trip-ready. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa sleepers (Class C rigs commonly sleep 4 to 7), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-top air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many hosts include kitchenware, linens, outdoor chairs, and a basic tool kit at no extra cost. Generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, and TVs vary by rig, so check the listing's amenities tab. Pro tip: for a family RV trip from Coleman, filter by sleeps 6+ and confirm the seatbelt count matches your group, Michigan law requires belts for every passenger in motion.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coleman,MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Coleman RV rental is handled securely through the RVezy platform, no cash or side payments to the host. You pay the rental total at booking using a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup. The deposit amount is shown on the listing before you book, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the proper fuel and tank levels, the hold is released within a few days of your trip ending. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth and stress-free.
