Camping near Colon, Michigan
Colon sits in St. Joseph County in southwest Michigan, a rural village surrounded by lakes, cornfields, and Amish farmland roughly halfway between Kalamazoo and the Indiana state line. The village is home to just over a thousand residents and is best known as the Magic Capital of the World, a title tied to Harry Blackstone Sr., who chose Colon as the summer base for his traveling illusion show in the mid 1920s. Abbott's Magic Company, founded in 1934, still operates in the village and anchors the town's magic tradition.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery sits on the St. Joseph River corridor, Hidden Pond Campground offers a smaller wooded setting, and Green Valley Campground rounds out the private options nearby. The St. Joseph County Grange Fair in nearby Centreville also opens its fairgrounds for camping, with a large inventory of water and electric sites.
Most travelers use Colon as a quiet base for lake fishing, river paddling, and day trips into the village to see the magic shops, murals, and historic cemetery.
Things to do near Colon
The village itself is the main attraction. Downtown Colon runs only a couple of blocks but includes Abbott's Magic Company, which has operated on St. Joseph Street since 1934. Lakeside Cemetery is the final resting place of Harry Blackstone Sr., Harry Blackstone Jr., and other figures from the world of magic, and it draws visitors on its own as part of the town's magic heritage.
On the water, the chain of lakes around Colon and nearby Sturgeon Lake supports fishing, kayaking, and pontoon rentals. The St. Joseph River, accessed through En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery, is a popular flat-water paddle for families.
Day trips reach Sturgis, Three Rivers, Centreville, and Amish country stops for baked goods, quilts, and produce stands.

The camping season in southwest Michigan runs roughly from May through mid-October, with peak demand in July and August. Most private campgrounds in the area open around Memorial Day and close near the end of October, matching the frost pattern for southern Lower Michigan. Shoulder-season trips in early May or late October can still see cold nights, so campers should plan for freezing temperatures at either end of the season.
The single busiest stretch of the year is Abbott's Magic Get-Together, held in Colon in early August. Campgrounds within thirty minutes fill months in advance for this event, and RV sites in the village itself book out well ahead.
Another demand spike hits in September for the St. Joseph County Grange Fair in Centreville, which draws large crowds to the fairgrounds and surrounding campgrounds. Fall foliage in the region peaks in mid to late October.

We had a great rental experience with Jared & this RV. Trailer was clean & well equipped. We had no issues at all on our trip, but I was confident I was going to be able to get a hold of our host if we had any questions or concerns. Would definitely trust to rent from him again!

Excellent camper! Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Jared dropped off and set up the camper for us so it was ready when we got there, great communication throughout the rental. We had issues with the generator and Jared came out to help figure out the issue and try to get it started again. When he wasn't able to fix it he ran out and got a new generator so we wouldn't be stranded all weekend without one. Definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking for a stress free camping experience :-)

How to book campgrounds near Colon
Private campgrounds around Colon, including En Gedi Campground River Resort, Hidden Pond Campground, and Green Valley Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites, by phone, or via aggregator platforms. Weekends in July and August, plus the week of Abbott's Magic Get-Together, should be booked several months out.
The St. Joseph County Grange Fair in Centreville reserves camping through the fair office. All campers must pay upon reservation, all campers must have a permit, and all campers use the Nottawa Drive-in Gate. Fair-week sites in September go quickly and often repeat year over year.
For Michigan state park campgrounds within driving distance, the DNR reservation site handles bookings. Campsites, lodging and harbors can be reserved up to six months in advance, or shelters up to 12 months in advance. For the most popular parks and dates, campers should be online when the booking window opens for their arrival date.
What to expect
Expect a rural, small-town setting. Cell coverage is generally reliable along main roads but can drop on the back county roads that connect the lakes. Grocery runs and fuel are easiest in Sturgis, Three Rivers, or Centreville rather than in Colon itself.
Sites at the private campgrounds around Colon tend to be a mix of water-and-electric and full-hookup, with a large share taken by seasonal campers. The St. Joseph County Grange Fair offers 36 by 22 foot sites with water and electricity, plus a dump station and bathroom and shower facilities. Big rigs should confirm site length and turning access when booking.
Bring bug spray for river and lake sites in June and July, and check firewood policies before hauling wood across county lines. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds.
