Camping near Decatur, Michigan
Decatur sits in Van Buren County in southwest Michigan's fruit belt, roughly a half hour from Kalamazoo and about an hour inland from the Lake Michigan shoreline near South Haven. The area is a working landscape of small inland lakes, wooded parcels, orchards, and vineyards, which shapes the local camping mix: most sites are privately run family campgrounds on lakes or in hardwoods rather than large public units.
Private RV parks close to town include Timber Trails RV Park, Leisure Valley RV Resort and Campground, Oak Shores Campground, Brush Creek Campground, and Hemlock Lake Campground, Inc. Full-hookup sites with 30- and 50-amp service, dump stations, laundry, and pools are typical at the larger properties. Travelers in soft-sided rigs should confirm tent policies at booking, since some parks accept RVs only.
For a public land option, Van Buren State Park sits on the Lake Michigan dunes near South Haven and rounds out the trip-planning shortlist for RV renters basing near Decatur.
Things to do near Decatur
The Paw Paw wine trail runs through neighboring towns, with St. Julian and other tasting rooms open year-round. Inland lakes around Decatur support swimming, kayaking, and warm-water fishing for bass, bluegill, and pike. South Haven, roughly forty minutes west, adds a Lake Michigan beach day, a working lighthouse pier, and a walkable harbor.
On-site amenities widen the options for families. Oak Shores Campground sits on Knickerbocker Lake and offers a swimming pool, boat ramp, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, a recreation hall, and planned weekend activities. Leisure Valley RV Resort and Campground and Brush Creek Campground add pools, playgrounds, and picnic areas, which keep rainy afternoons manageable without leaving the loop.

The main camping season runs from mid-April through mid-October, tracking Michigan's warm-weather window. Most private parks in Van Buren County follow this pattern: Oak Shores Campground is open from April 15 through October 15, and neighboring campgrounds keep similar dates. Late spring can still be cool and wet, so shoulder-season renters should pack for temperatures that swing sharply between day and night.
July and August are the peak weeks. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out first, particularly waterfront and full-hookup sites. Families targeting these dates should reserve well in advance and confirm rig-length limits before arrival.
September and early October bring quieter loops, cooler nights, and harvest activity at area orchards and wineries. By late October most private parks have closed for the season, and winter camping options in the immediate Decatur area are limited.

We had a great rental experience with Jared & this RV. Trailer was clean & well equipped. We had no issues at all on our trip, but I was confident I was going to be able to get a hold of our host if we had any questions or concerns. Would definitely trust to rent from him again!

Excellent camper! Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Jared dropped off and set up the camper for us so it was ready when we got there, great communication throughout the rental. We had issues with the generator and Jared came out to help figure out the issue and try to get it started again. When he wasn't able to fix it he ran out and got a new generator so we wouldn't be stranded all weekend without one. Definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking for a stress free camping experience :-)

How to book campgrounds near Decatur
Private campgrounds around Decatur, including Timber Trails RV Park, Leisure Valley RV Resort and Campground, Oak Shores Campground, Brush Creek Campground, and Hemlock Lake Campground, Inc, handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most require a deposit at booking. Policies on cancellations, pet fees, and minimum stays on holiday weekends vary by park, so read the fine print before locking in dates.
For Michigan state park sites, including Van Buren State Park on Lake Michigan, reservations run through the Michigan DNR reservation system on a rolling six-month window, with new dates opening each morning. Popular Lake Michigan sites in July and August are often claimed the day they release.
When booking with an RV rental, confirm site length, hookup type, and whether the park allows delivery of a towable or motorhome from a rental host.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of shaded, wooded sites and open lakeside pads. Roads inside the parks are generally paved or well-graded gravel; some interior loops are tight, so drivers of longer motorhomes should ask for a pull-through where possible. Oak Shores Campground offers water and electric at every site, with sewer at most, plus 30- and 50-amp service and pull-through options for big rigs.
Cell coverage across Van Buren County is generally solid on major carriers, and several parks offer park-wide Wi-Fi, though bandwidth thins on busy weekends. Mosquitoes and biting flies pick up after rain from June through August, so bring repellent.
The closest full-service grocery, fuel, and propane stops are in Decatur, Paw Paw, and Lawton. Cash is rarely needed, but small camp stores may cap card transactions.
