Campgrounds near DeWitt, Michigan
DeWitt sits just north of Lansing in Clinton County, central Michigan, giving RV renters quick access to both urban services and the state park network. The city is roughly ten minutes from US-127 and I-69, which makes it a practical base for travellers heading between Grand Rapids, Detroit, and northern Michigan.
The closest full-service option is Lansing Cottonwood Campground, a family-run park in the Lansing area with 135 sites ranging from 50-amp full hookups to 30-amp water and electric and rustic sites, open seasonally from May 1 through early November. About twenty minutes northeast, Sleepy Hollow State Park offers 181 modern (electric) sites around Lake Ovid, plus rustic cabins and a group youth area. Additional options within roughly an hour include the Michigan Trapshooting Association grounds in Mason, Campgrounds-R-Us, and Just In Time Campground.
Between these five, renters can pick between hookup-heavy private parks close to Lansing amenities and a large state park with lake access, trails, and a swim beach on the north side of the metro area.
Things to do near DeWitt
Sleepy Hollow State Park is the outdoor anchor of the area. The 2,600-acre park is built around 410-acre Lake Ovid, a no-wake reservoir popular for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing for bass, pike, bluegill, crappie, and muskie, with a designated swim beach, boat launch, four fishing piers, and an 18-hole disc golf course in the day-use area. Roughly 16 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, plus about 6.5 miles of equestrian trails, wind through prairie, hardwood forest, and stands of pine.
Closer to town, Lansing Cottonwood Campground has a swimming pool, small fishing ponds, kayak and paddleboat rentals, a playground, a softball diamond, and a rec room, which works well for families with kids in the RV.

The prime RV window in central Michigan runs from late May through September. Lansing Cottonwood Campground operates roughly May 1 through November 1, and most private parks in the region follow a similar Memorial Day to mid-October pattern. Sleepy Hollow State Park runs its 181 modern sites through the warm months, with rustic cabins available year-round for hardier travellers.
July and August bring warm, humid days and the heaviest booking pressure, especially on weekends and holidays. Late spring and early summer can be wet, and afternoon thunderstorms are common through the season. September and early October are quieter and cooler, with good trail conditions and fall colour typically peaking across Clinton County in mid-October.
Winter drops well below freezing with regular snow. Most private campgrounds shut down, and modern state park sites are limited, though Sleepy Hollow keeps trails open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and portions of the horse-trail network are designated for dog sledding when conditions allow.
How to book a site
Sleepy Hollow State Park bookings are handled through the Michigan DNR at MiDNRReservations.com, or by calling the DNR Parks and Recreation contact centre at 517-284-7275. The system uses a rolling six-month window, so a site for a specific arrival date opens exactly six months earlier. Popular summer weekends and holidays can book out within minutes of the window opening, so setting a reminder is worthwhile.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required on any vehicle entering a state park, state boat launch, or state forest campground, and it can be added at checkout or purchased with vehicle registration for Michigan-plated vehicles.
Lansing Cottonwood Campground, Campgrounds-R-Us, and Just In Time Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For holiday weekends and premium sites, book several months out.
What to expect
Sites at Sleepy Hollow State Park are laid out in modern loops with paved pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Sites are electric-only, with a sanitation station and potable water fill at the campground entrance and no sewer at individual sites. Loops share modern shower and restroom buildings, and most sites are semi-private with tree cover.
Lansing Cottonwood Campground has 11 full-hookup pull-throughs suitable for larger Class A rigs, 99 water-and-electric sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, and about 25 tent sites at the back of the property. Expect closer spacing near the front, offset by an on-site pool, laundry, camp store, and rec room.
Cell service is generally strong across the DeWitt and Lansing area. Grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are easy to reach on US-127 and Old US-27.
