Campgrounds near Essexville, Michigan
Essexville sits on the eastern edge of Bay City, on the inner shore of Saginaw Bay in Michigan's Thumb region. RV travelers use it as a base for Lake Huron shoreline access, walleye fishing, and short drives to Frankenmuth and the Tri-Cities (Bay City, Saginaw, Midland).
The closest campground to town is Finn Road Park, a Hampton Township park with paved full-hookup RV pads and a boat launch on the Saginaw River channel out to the Bay. A few miles northwest, Bay City State Park runs a modern DNR campground on the Bay shoreline with 196 sites, a swim beach, and the Tobico Marsh wetlands. Linwood Beach Marina and Campground sits farther up the shore in Linwood.
Inland options within an easy drive include Frankenmuth Jellystone Park Camp Resort, a family resort near the Bavarian-themed town of Frankenmuth, and Saginaw Bay Resort - Outdoor Adventures, a membership-style resort south of the Bay.
Things to do near Essexville
Saginaw Bay is the main draw. Anglers launch at Finn Road Park for walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass, and the bay is a well-known walleye fishery in spring and early summer. Boat and kayak launches are also available at Bay City State Park's Tobico Lagoon.
At Bay City State Park, families use the swim beach, spray park, accessible playground, and the Saginaw Bay Visitor Center. Seven miles of trails, observation towers, and boardwalks cross the Tobico Marsh, one of the largest remaining freshwater coastal wetlands on the Great Lakes, and the park is a strong birding spot during spring and fall migration.
Off-site, Frankenmuth is about 35 minutes south for shops, restaurants, and the Jellystone resort's water park. Downtown Bay City adds riverfront parks, a farmers' market, and the Wenonah Park events lawn.

Camping season around Essexville runs roughly May through October. Finn Road Park is open May 1 through October 31, and its office is closed November through March. Bay City State Park's modern campground follows the standard Michigan state-park season, with peak demand from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Late May through early July brings the busiest walleye fishing on Saginaw Bay and steady weekend bookings at bayside parks. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, with lake-effect humidity and afternoon thunderstorms possible. Biting insects (mosquitoes, stable flies near the shoreline) are most active from June through August, especially in the wetlands.
September and early October cool quickly and offer a good window for quieter sites, fall color, and fall bird migration through the Tobico Marsh. Winters are cold and snowy; most private and township campgrounds close, and state-park camping is limited.

How to book campgrounds near Essexville
Bay City State Park reservations are handled through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com or by phone at 1-800-44-PARKS. Campsites, overnight lodging, and harbor slips can be reserved up to six months to the date of arrival, and popular summer weekends fill early, so book as far ahead as possible. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to any Michigan state park or state forest campground.
Finn Road Park is booked directly through Hampton Township; reservations for the following year open October 1 of the current year, and the park requests at least seven days' notice for cancellations. Linwood Beach Marina and Campground, Frankenmuth Jellystone Park Camp Resort, and Saginaw Bay Resort - Outdoor Adventures each take reservations through their own websites or phone lines. Holiday weekends and Frankenmuth event weekends sell out first.
What to expect on the ground
Most RV sites in the immediate Essexville area are level, back-in, and full or partial hookup. Finn Road Park offers 57 paved, cement-padded full-hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp power, water, and sewer, plus a modern bathhouse; tent camping is not accepted. Bay City State Park's modern campground has electric sites (a mix of 20/30 amp and 50 amp), a sanitation station on-site, and two ADA-accessible mini cabins.
Check-in at Michigan state parks is 3 p.m. with a 1 p.m. checkout, and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Firewood should be certified heat-treated wood to help slow the spread of tree-killing invasive pests. Pets are allowed on leashes at both Finn Road Park and Bay City State Park, though pets are restricted from park buildings and the designated swim beach at the state park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Essexville, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Essexville, MI?
RV rental in Essexville is one of the more affordable ways to explore Michigan's Saginaw Bay region. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $160 per night, campervans and Class C motorhomes between $150 and $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400 per night. Hosts in the Bay City and Tri-Cities area often run weekly discounts, and booking midweek or in the shoulder months of May and September can drop nightly rates noticeably. For a cheap RV rental in Essexville, filter by travel trailers and use the price slider, or look for delivered units so no tow vehicle is needed. Pro tip: pair a Finn Road Park stay with a midweek pickup for the best overall value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essexville%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Essexville, Michigan?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Essexville for virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or special endorsement for recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload your license through RVezy's secure ID verification during booking, which usually takes just a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. The only Michigan-specific rule to know is the rare Recreational Double R endorsement, which only applies if you're towing a fifth wheel plus a second trailer behind it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside coverage comes with my Essexville RV rental?
Every RV rental in Essexville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore Saginaw Bay with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and during checkout you'll choose the coverage tier that fits your comfort level. If you get a flat tire on M-25, lock the keys inside at Finn Road Park, or run into a mechanical hiccup heading north, one phone call gets help dispatched any hour of the day. Choose your tier at checkout and you're set for a confident first Essexville RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Essexville RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy that applies to every booking, not the individual host. Refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and RVezy also has accommodations for major disruptions like severe weather, which matter in Michigan when a Lake Huron storm or early lake-effect snow can change plans fast. You don't have to dig through individual listings to compare policies, because it's standardized across the platform. If anything comes up, message RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. Book now and stay flexible later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Essexville?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Essexville is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Once you're on the road, your pup has great options: Bay City State Park allows leashed dogs along much of the Lake Huron shoreline (except posted swim areas), Finn Road Park in Essexville welcomes leashed pets, and the trails through Tobico Marsh are leash-friendly with plenty of wildlife sniffs. Bring a 6-foot leash, waste bags, and your pet's vaccination records. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size notes so check-in is a tail-wagging success.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Essexville?
Yes, RV delivery in Essexville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Use the Delivery filter when searching and you'll see hosts who will tow or drive the RV directly to Finn Road Park, Bay City State Park, your Hampton Township driveway, or a private property near the Saginaw River. The host arrives, levels the rig, hooks up water, sewer, and 30 or 50 amp electric, and walks you through every system so you're not figuring it out alone. Most local hosts charge a per-mile delivery fee or a flat rate within about 30 miles of Bay City. It's the easiest way to enjoy your first Essexville RV trip without ever getting behind a big wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038104694-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive, and what are the mileage policies for RV rental Michigan trips?
Most Essexville hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an upgrade or add-on, which is perfect for longer Michigan loops. From Essexville you can reach Frankenmuth in about 30 minutes, Mackinaw City in roughly 3.5 hours, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in about 3.5 hours, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in 5 to 6 hours. Extra mileage typically runs $0.30 to $0.50 per mile if you exceed the allowance. Each listing clearly shows the daily mileage cap, so you can map your route before booking. Pro tip: if you're planning a big RV road trip from Essexville up the Sunrise Coast on US-23, pick a host offering unlimited miles to keep the budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essexville%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Essexville for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping Essexville travelers love. Finn Road Park, right in Essexville, offers full-hookup sites with 30/50 amp power and direct Saginaw Bay boat launch access (seasonal, typically May through October). Bay City Recreation Area (Bay City State Park), just minutes north, has 193 modern sites, mini cabins, a sandy beach, and the Saginaw Bay Visitor Center. Frankenmuth Jellystone Park is about 40 minutes south for family resort vibes, and Bear's Den Campground in Vassar is a quieter option about 35 minutes east. Pro tip: Finn Road fills with seasonal anglers chasing Saginaw Bay walleye, so reserve early for June weekends.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/bay-cityWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Essexville?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for an Essexville RV trip, with the sweet spot landing in June, July, and early September. Summer highs typically average in the upper 70s to low 80s F, perfect for Saginaw Bay swimming, walleye fishing, and Tobico Marsh birdwatching, while overnight lows stay a comfortable 55 to 65 F. May and late September offer cooler 60s, fewer mosquitoes, vivid spring blooms or fall color along the Bay City Riverwalk, and lower nightly rates. Winters get genuinely cold with lake-effect snow, so most local campgrounds, including Finn Road Park, close November through April. Insider tip: book around the Bay City Fireworks Festival in early July, one of the largest free fireworks shows in the country, lighting up the Saginaw River.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Essexville?
You'll be just fine, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Essexville and the surrounding Bay City area have wide, flat roads (M-25, US-10, and I-75 are all gentle drives), no mountain grades, and easy parking at most local campgrounds. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, and you can text them throughout your trip if a question pops up. If driving still feels intimidating, choose a campervan rental Essexville size (Class B) which handles like an oversized van, or book delivery so a pro sets everything up for you. Pro tip: practice a quick parking lot loop at the host's location before heading out, so you're confident before you hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002253094-For-rentersWhat happens if I break down or need roadside help during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether it's a dead battery at Finn Road Park, a flat on M-13, or a mechanical issue between Essexville and Tawas City, one phone call gets help dispatched. Common services include towing, tire change, jump start, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance. Your host is also a direct text away for quick troubleshooting on appliances, the generator, or slide-outs, since they know their rig best. Save both the RVezy roadside number and your host's contact info to your phone before pickup. Pro tip: cell service is strong along the I-75 corridor and Saginaw Bay shoreline, so help is always reachable.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Essexville RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate travel, and Essexville's location makes Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin all easy reaches for your RV road trip from Essexville. Popular routes include US-23 north to Mackinaw City (about 3.5 hours), I-75 south to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio (about 3.5 hours), and west to Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 3.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada (Sarnia via the Blue Water Bridge is roughly 1.5 hours away) may be allowed depending on the individual host and their insurance, so message them directly before booking to confirm and to receive written travel authorization. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring a passport or enhanced license for any Ontario detour.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I expect?
Budgeting fuel for your Essexville RV trip is straightforward. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically lands at 9 to 13 MPG. Michigan gas prices in recent months have hovered in the mid $3 range per gallon for regular unleaded, with Saginaw and Bay City often running slightly cheaper than the state average. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Bay City or Saginaw before heading north, because prices climb noticeably once you pass West Branch on I-75.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Essexville?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Bay City State Park's modern campground reservations open six months in advance through Michigan DNR Reservations (midnrreservations.com or 1-800-447-2757), and waterfront sites for July and August weekends often go in the first hour they release. Finn Road Park in Essexville fills with seasonal walleye anglers, so reserving 60 to 90 days ahead for summer is smart. Private campgrounds like Frankenmuth Jellystone book even further out for holiday weekends. Don't forget the Michigan Recreation Passport, which is required for vehicle entry into every state park. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the six-month booking window opening at 8:00 a.m. Eastern.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like around Essexville and the Saginaw Bay?
Driving conditions around Essexville are some of the easiest in Michigan for RVs. The terrain is flat, M-25 along Saginaw Bay is a smooth two-lane shoreline route, and I-75 and US-10 provide wide, straightforward access to the rest of the state. Summer thunderstorms can bring quick downpours, so pull off if visibility drops, and watch for crosswinds on the Zilwaukee Bridge near Saginaw. With taller Class A rigs, plan your route through downtown Bay City carefully and follow posted clearance signage. Deer activity is highest at dawn and dusk on rural roads like M-13 north of town. Pro tip: most Essexville campgrounds are reachable via flat, paved county roads, perfect for first-time drivers.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Essexville?
Local campgrounds make hookups and dump stations easy. Finn Road Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric) at its pad sites, plus a modern bath house, playground, and direct Saginaw Bay boat launch. Bay City State Park has a sanitation/dump station at its modern campground, potable water fill stations, modern restrooms with showers, a spray park, and a swim beach. Most private parks in the area, including Frankenmuth Jellystone, offer pools, laundry, camp stores, and propane refills. Bring a 25-foot freshwater hose, sewer hose, and both 30 and 50 amp adapters to be ready for anything. Pro tip: buy certified heat-treated firewood on-site to comply with Michigan's invasive species rules.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parksWhat features and amenities are inside Essexville RV rentals?
Today's RV rental in Essexville comes well-equipped for comfort. Expect queen or king beds, a kitchen with a propane stove, refrigerator, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a wet or dry bath with a shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelts for every passenger. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often add a generator, outdoor speakers, awning with LED lights, flat-screen TV, and slide-outs that nearly double interior space. Wi-Fi and cell-boosted internet are increasingly common, though Saginaw Bay coverage is strong on most carriers anyway. Travel trailers typically sleep 4 to 8 and include similar kitchen and bath setups. Check each listing's amenity list and message the host with any must-haves like a coffee maker or specific bed configuration.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Essexville%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for motorhome rental Essexville?
Motorhome rental Essexville hosts offer a great menu of add-ons that can elevate your trip. Common options include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, extra generator hours, bike racks, kayaks, camp chairs, fire pits, and propane refills. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on for first-timers, with hosts dropping the RV at Bay City State Park or Finn Road Park for a per-mile fee. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home or a mutually agreed location in Essexville, Hampton Township, or Bay City. Mileage policies and pet fees are listed clearly on each listing. Pro tip: bundling add-ons during booking is almost always cheaper than adding them later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038104694-RV-deliveryHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a major credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your payment protected. The total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons you select. Hosts also set a refundable security deposit that is held separately from your booking payment and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid issues, take a quick walk-around video of the RV at pickup and dropoff, return it with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay within the mileage allowance. That's it, easy as the drive to Saginaw Bay.
