Campgrounds near Farwell, Michigan
Farwell sits in Clare County in central Lower Michigan, roughly halfway between Mount Pleasant and Houghton Lake. The area is part of Michigan's small-lake and northern-hardwood belt, with dozens of inland lakes, the Muskegon River corridor, and state forest land within a short drive of town. RV travelers use Farwell as a base for lake-focused trips rather than for big-mountain scenery.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Lake George Campground, Hidden Hill Family Campground, and Countryside Campground and Cabins all sit within a short drive of Farwell and cater to families with full-hookup sites and lake access. Harrison RV Family Campground extends the options north toward Harrison, and Weidman KOA Holiday adds a franchise option to the south.
Public camping is available through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which manages state parks and state forest campgrounds throughout the region. Wilson State Park, on Budd Lake in Harrison, is the closest full-service state park to Farwell and offers a modern campground with electric hookups.
Things to do around Farwell
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake George, Budd Lake, and the chain of small lakes around Harrison support swimming, fishing for bass, walleye, muskellunge, and panfish, kayaking, and pontoon rentals. The Muskegon River, west of town, is a popular tubing and paddling run.
Inland, the Pere Marquette State Forest and surrounding public land offer trail networks for hiking, ORV riding at nearby trailheads such as Leota, and mountain biking. The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail runs east from Clare through Midland and is paved for cyclists and inline skaters.
Family day-trips include the Amish shops and bakeries around Clare, mini-golf and go-karts in Houghton Lake, and Mount Pleasant to the south for the Ziibiwing Cultural Center, Central Michigan University, and the Soaring Eagle complex. Fall color drives on the back roads north of Farwell are a common shoulder-season draw.

The camping season in central Michigan is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds around Farwell open in mid to late April and close in mid-October, roughly matching the Michigan state park operating calendar. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with the Fourth of July and weekends near the walleye opener being the hardest to book.
Spring is cool and wet, with black-fly and mosquito activity picking up in late May. Lakes warm slowly, so swimming is usually not comfortable until mid-June. Summer brings warm days, cool nights, and afternoon thunderstorms; this is the core family-camping window and the best time for lake activities.
Fall color typically peaks in the first two weeks of October across Clare County, and the shoulder weeks on either side offer cool nights, low bug pressure, and easier reservations. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close for the season, and only a handful of state forest sites remain accessible for self-contained rigs.
How to book campsites near Farwell
State park and state forest campgrounds are reserved through the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com. The system opens bookings on a rolling six-month window, so summer weekends at Wilson State Park in Harrison should be locked in as soon as the window opens. A non-refundable reservation fee applies on top of the nightly rate, and a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
Private campgrounds around Farwell, including Lake George Campground, Hidden Hill Family Campground, Countryside Campground and Cabins, and Harrison RV Family Campground, each take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weidman KOA Holiday can be booked through the KOA national reservation platform.
Holiday weekends and any site with lakefront access tend to fill first. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead for summer, and two to three weeks ahead for shoulder-season trips, is a reasonable rule of thumb.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area are typically wooded, level, and sized for travel trailers and Class C motorhomes. Big Class A rigs and long fifth wheels should confirm site length and turning access when booking, especially at older lakefront loops. Full hookups are common at private parks; Wilson State Park and other state sites are usually electric-only with a central dump station.
Cell coverage is generally usable in and around Farwell, Clare, and Harrison but drops off quickly on state forest roads. Grocery and fuel runs are easiest in Clare, which has a full supermarket, hardware stores, and diesel pumps.
Biting insects are a real factor from late May through July; screen rooms and repellent are worth the space. Black bears are present but rarely a problem if food is stored inside the RV overnight. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with Michigan's rules on moving wood that can spread oak wilt and emerald ash borer.
