Campgrounds near Freeport, Michigan
Freeport sits in northern Barry County in West Michigan, roughly between Grand Rapids to the northwest and Hastings to the south. The surrounding countryside is a mix of farmland, small lakes, and river corridors along the Thornapple River, which shapes much of the local camping scene. Most private campgrounds within a short drive cater to RV travelers, with a heavy presence of seasonal sites and family-oriented amenities.
The closest options include Tyler Creek Campground and Golf in nearby Alto, which pairs a large campground with a nine-hole golf course along a trout stream. Whispering Waters Campground and Kayak Rental and Indian Valley Campground & Canoe Livery sit along the Thornapple River near Middleville and Hastings, while Winding Creek Camp offers another Hastings-area base. All are within roughly a half-hour drive of Freeport.
Public land camping is available a bit farther out, with Yankee Springs Recreation Area and the Barry State Game Area providing state-run sites within about 30 to 40 minutes.
Things to do around Freeport
The Thornapple River drives much of the recreation. Paddling, tubing, and smallmouth bass fishing are common activities from the Middleville and Hastings access points, and river liveries in the area rent kayaks, canoes, and tubes for downstream trips.
On land, the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail links several small towns through forests, wetlands, and river corridors, making it a solid option for cycling or an easy family walk. Golfers can play the nine-hole course at Tyler Creek Campground and Golf without leaving the campground.
Day trips are easy from Freeport. Grand Rapids offers the John Ball Zoo, museums, and downtown dining within about 40 minutes, while Yankee Springs Recreation Area to the southwest has swim beaches, mountain-bike trails, and inland lakes suited to a full day out.

December - February
30° / 18°F 55 mmCold and snowy; nearly all private campgrounds closed.
The camping season in this part of Michigan runs roughly from mid-April through the end of October. Tyler Creek Campground and Golf operates on an April to October window, and Whispering Waters Campground and Kayak Rental runs from late April through late September. Private parks in the area follow a similar rhythm, and most close for winter.
July and August bring the warmest weather and the highest demand. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill fastest, and many riverside sites are held by seasonal campers, which further reduces short-stay availability. Booking well ahead is essential for summer weekends.
Late spring and early fall offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations. September is a strong choice for RV travelers who want river paddling without peak-season crowds, though water levels on the Thornapple can drop later in the season.

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our camper immensely. The owner was very helpful and accommodating. Thank you
Brenda S. - Jul 2026
The camper is well taken care of, has everything you would need for a camping trip, and the host was really easy to communicate with and make time arrangements. We had it delivered and everything was very smooth and easy. We have two small boys who shared the oversized bottom bunk. This is a great RV for families, not too tight of quarters but still a very manageable towing size. I would definitely recommend this RV.

Wonderful experience with Eric and his RV. Clean, comfortable and Eric went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. We will absolutely rent from him again in the future!

How to book a site near Freeport
Private campgrounds around Freeport typically take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Tyler Creek Campground and Golf, Whispering Waters Campground and Kayak Rental, Indian Valley Campground Canoe Livery, and Winding Creek Camp all operate as independent, family-run parks, so policies on deposits, minimum stays, and cancellation vary by property. Whispering Waters, for instance, is primarily a seasonal park and enforces a seven-night minimum for short-stay guests.
For state-run camping at nearby parks such as Yankee Springs Recreation Area, reservations go through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com. State sites can be booked up to six months in advance on a rolling window, and popular summer weekends are often reserved within minutes of the booking window opening.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural West Michigan setting: wooded and grassy sites, gravel interior roads, and rivers or small lakes within easy reach. Full hookup sites with 30- and 50-amp service are common at the larger private parks, and pull-through sites suitable for big rigs are available at Tyler Creek Campground and Golf. Cabins and rustic tent sites are also offered at several properties.
Amenities lean family-oriented. Pools, playgrounds, camp stores, laundry, and dump stations are typical, and themed weekends with live music, hayrides, and kids' activities run through the summer at Tyler Creek. Leashed pets are generally welcome, though rules vary by park.
Cell coverage is reliable across most of the area, and grocery stores, fuel, and propane are available in Hastings, Middleville, and Caledonia.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Freeport, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Freeport, MI?
RV rental in Freeport is one of the most affordable ways to explore West Michigan's lake country. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes average $150 to $230, and larger Class A motorhomes run $200 to $290 in peak summer. Because Freeport is a small village in Barry County, nightly rates here tend to be lower than Grand Rapids pickups about 30 miles north. To score a cheap RV rental in Freeport, book mid-week, travel in May or September, or filter for weekly discounts. Pro tip: many hosts knock 10 to 20 percent off bookings of seven nights or more, making a longer Michigan RV trip the best value of all.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Freeport, MI?
Good news: a regular valid driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Freeport. There is no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) required, even for larger Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and your ID is confirmed inside the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they go from booking to rolling out toward Yankee Springs or Gun Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Freeport, MI protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental in Freeport booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), picking the option that fits your comfort and budget, and the plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it offers significant financial protection while you're exploring Barry County's lakes and back roads. Pro tip: read each plan summary before you confirm so you understand your deductible. Then enjoy the drive knowing help is one tap away if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Freeport, MI RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and there's a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refunds depend on how close you are to your trip start date, and special circumstances may be considered separately under RVezy's policies. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you won't see different policies on individual listings. Pro tip: book your RV camping in Freeport early to lock in the best rigs for summer weekends, knowing the grace period has you covered if plans change shortly after booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Freeport, MI RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Freeport is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs from local hosts who welcome dogs (sometimes for a small cleaning fee). Michigan is one of the most dog-friendly camping states in the country: pets are allowed at most state park campgrounds and on trails, with the exception of designated swim beaches. Yankee Springs Recreation Area, about 15 minutes west of Freeport, has miles of leashed dog-friendly trails through oak forest. Pro tip: pack a long lead and a collapsible water bowl, since summer humidity around Gun Lake can spike with daytime highs in the 80s F (27 to 30 C).
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Freeport?
Yes, RV delivery in Freeport is one of the best perks of booking peer-to-peer. Many local hosts will tow or drive the motorhome straight to your campsite at Yankee Springs Recreation Area, a nearby private RV park, or even your private property in Irving Township, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. This is gold for first-time renters who don't want to tow anything down M-37 or M-43. Just turn on the Delivery filter when you search RVezy and message the host for a quote (fees are usually based on round-trip mileage). Pro tip: ask the host to deliver the day before your reservation starts so you can settle in slowly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport%2C%20MichiganHow many miles per day do I get with a Freeport, MI RV rental?
Most Freeport RV rentals include a generous daily mileage allowance, typically 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles available at a small per-mile rate (often around $0.30 to $0.45). You'll also find listings offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which are perfect for longer road trips. From Freeport you can reach Grand Rapids in about 30 minutes (roughly 30 miles north), Lake Michigan beaches at Holland in roughly an hour, Saugatuck in about 75 minutes, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in around 3 hours. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and choose a mileage package that fits, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage fees later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Freeport, MI?
You're spoiled for choice: some of the best campgrounds near Freeport are within a 30-minute drive. Yankee Springs Recreation Area on Gun Lake offers modern sites with electric hookups, swimming, and trails. Whispering Waters Campground on the Thornapple River is family-owned and great for tubing. Fort Custer Recreation Area (about 45 minutes southwest) has modern sites and miles of mountain-bike trails. Pro tip: Michigan requires a Recreation Passport to enter state parks (a small annual fee for residents added at vehicle registration, and a per-entry fee for non-residents), easiest to add when you arrive at the gatehouse.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/yankee-springsWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Freeport, MI?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Freeport runs from late April through mid-October, with June through September being the standout months. Summer days typically average 78 to 85 F (25 to 29 C) with cool 55 to 62 F (13 to 17 C) nights ideal for campfires. Late September brings spectacular hardwood fall color across Barry County and lighter campground crowds, often considered the locals' favorite season. Winters here are genuinely cold with significant lake-effect snow, so winter rentals are rarer. Pro tip: book Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends three to six months out, those Gun Lake sites disappear fast.
weather.gov/grr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Freeport?
You've got this, Freeport is one of the friendliest places in Michigan to learn. Rural Barry County roads like M-37, M-43, and M-79 are generally wide, lightly trafficked, and easy on the nerves compared to city driving. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, leveling, slide-outs, dump procedures, and driving tips, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. If you're nervous about driving at all, just book a host who offers delivery and setup so the RV is waiting for you at your campground. Pro tip: do a slow loop around an empty parking lot before heading to your campsite to get comfortable with the rig's size and turning radius.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-usWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Freeport, MI trip?
Don't worry, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is just a phone call away whether you're at Gun Lake, on US-131, or on a back road near Middleville. The roadside team can dispatch a tow, jump-start, tire change, or lockout service, and RVezy's customer support is reachable around the clock to coordinate with your host. Cell coverage across Barry County is generally strong on the major carriers, especially along M-37 and M-43. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and roadside assistance number at pickup, then save them in your phone so you've got everything ready if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat road trip routes are popular from Freeport, MI?
Freeport sits in a perfect launchpad spot for a Michigan RV road trip. Top routes include the Lake Michigan Shoreline drive through Holland, Saugatuck, and South Haven (about 60 to 90 miles west); a fall-color loop up M-37 to Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (around 170 miles north); the Mackinac Bridge run to Mackinaw City (roughly 250 miles, about 4 hours); and an eastern swing to Frankenmuth and the Thumb (around 150 miles east). Crossing into Canada toward Niagara Falls or Toronto is allowed on many RVezy rentals (confirm with your host first and bring your passport), but travel into Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: tackle the Lake Michigan loop counter-clockwise so the sunsets are always on your driver's side.
michigan.org/road-tripsHow much should I budget for fuel on a Freeport, MI RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Michigan gas typically runs in the $3 to $4 per gallon range, and Freeport-area stations (in Hastings, Middleville, and Caledonia) usually price a few cents below Grand Rapids metro. Expect 8 to 12 mpg for a Class A or Class C motorhome, 12 to 15 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer, and 16 to 20 mpg for a campervan. A typical 4-night, 400-mile loop through Yankee Springs, Holland, and Saugatuck burns roughly 35 to 50 gallons. Pro tip: use a fuel-price app or MDOT's Mi Drive site to find the cheapest pumps along your route and avoid topping up right off the highway.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapHow far in advance should I book a campground near Freeport, MI?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Michigan State Park campgrounds (including Yankee Springs and Fort Custer Recreation Area) open reservations 6 months in advance through Michigan's DNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends at Gun Lake can sell out within minutes of the booking window opening. Private parks typically take bookings 6 to 12 months out. For shoulder-season trips (May, late September, October) you can often score a great site 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your dream campground is full, set up an alert on the Michigan DNR reservation site, cancellations open up regularly, especially for Sunday and Monday nights.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Freeport, MI?
Driving in and around Freeport is refreshingly mellow, you're in rural Barry County with light traffic, gently rolling terrain, and well-maintained two-lane highways like M-37, M-43, and M-79. The closest interstates are I-96 (Grand Rapids) and I-94 (Battle Creek), both about 30 to 40 minutes away. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, sudden summer thunderstorms, and lake-effect snow squalls between November and March that can drop visibility quickly. Spring brings occasional potholes after the freeze-thaw cycle. Pro tip: check MDOT's Mi Drive map before you set out, it shows live construction, crashes, and winter road conditions so you can route around trouble before you leave the campsite.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Freeport, MI?
You'll find a great mix. Modern sites at Yankee Springs Recreation Area and Fort Custer offer 30/50-amp electric, water, picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Some private parks add full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Rustic state forest campgrounds nearby have vault toilets and hand pumps but no hookups. For dumping and freshwater between trips, several Michigan DNR sites along M-37 are open seasonally. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter, they cover the vast majority of the hookup combos you'll meet around Barry County.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Freeport, MI?
Most motorhome rentals in Freeport come fully road-ready: queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Class A and Class C rigs typically include a TV, sometimes a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts add starter kits with linens, towels, and basic dishes. Campervan rentals in Freeport are more compact but cleverly packed for two travelers. Wi-Fi isn't always built in, but a cell hotspot works well across most of Barry County. Pro tip: review the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm anything specific (like a coffee maker or kids' bedding) before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Freeport?
Hosts in the Freeport area offer some genuinely useful add-ons: delivery and setup (often priced per loaded mile), generator use, kitchen and linen kits, camp chairs, bike racks, propane refills, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is usually a 30-to-60-minute appointment at the host's location in Freeport or nearby Hastings, Middleville, or Caledonia, where you'll get a full walkthrough. Mileage policies vary by listing, typically 100 to 150 free miles per day with unlimited options available. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen kit on your first booking, it adds a small fee but turns pickup day into a stress-free arrival at Yankee Springs or Gun Lake with everything set up and waiting.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Freeport%2C%20MichiganHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Freeport, MI RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay the full booking total (rental cost, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons) through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash changing hands with your host. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. The deposit amount varies by RV size and value. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video of the inside and outside of the RV at both pickup and drop-off in Freeport. Pro tip: return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels you received and the holding tanks emptied to keep your full deposit.
