Campgrounds near Grass Lake, Michigan
Grass Lake sits in southern Michigan between Jackson and Ann Arbor along the I-94 corridor, putting RV travelers within a short drive of both private campgrounds and the largest state park in the Lower Peninsula. The village itself is small and rural, but the surrounding Jackson and Washtenaw counties are dotted with inland lakes, moraines, and hardwood forest left behind by retreating glaciers, terrain that shapes most of the local camping options.
Private RV parks in the immediate area include Greenwood Acres Family Campground, Apple Creek Campground and RV Park, Hideaway RV Park, and Oaks Campgrounds. These properties generally cater to trailers and motorhomes with hookups, family activities, and longer-stay sites.
For a more natural setting, Waterloo State Recreation Area lies just east of Grass Lake and is located in northeast Jackson County and parts of Washtenaw County, featuring 4 campgrounds, 11 lakes, a nature center, and over 50 miles of trails. The park encompasses over 21,000 acres of forest, lakes and wetlands. The Equestrian campground within Waterloo is a specific option for RVers traveling with horses.
Things to do near Grass Lake
Waterloo Recreation Area anchors the outdoor activity in this corner of Michigan. The park offers modern, rustic and equestrian campgrounds, backpack-only sites and overnight lodging facilities, 11 inland lakes, a trail system, the DTE Energy Foundation Trail, a visitor center, and fishing and hunting opportunities, and the Gerald Eddy Discovery Center introduces visitors to geology and the diverse natural habitats found within Waterloo. Swimming beaches, boat launches, and paddling on the kettle lakes are popular in summer.
Riders staying at the Equestrian - Waterloo State Recreation Area campground get direct trail access. The campground connects to approximately 21 miles of Waterloo's equestrian trails as well as the day-use staging area, which offers a mounting block and pavilion.
Beyond the park, Grass Lake itself supports fishing and small-boat use, and downtown Jackson, Chelsea, and Ann Arbor are all short drives for restaurants, markets, and rainy-day stops.

Southern Michigan has four distinct seasons, and the camping calendar reflects that. Late May through early October is the core RV season, with warm days, active lake use, and full services at both private parks and state campgrounds. Jackson has a humid continental climate with no dry season and warm summers, and shows the typical progression of four distinct seasons. July is the warmest month and also one of the busiest for reservations.
Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year. The month with the most rainfall is May, when the rain falls for 19.5 days and typically aggregates up to 89mm of precipitation. Trails and equestrian sites can be muddy in April and early May, so shoulder-season RVers should plan for soft ground.
Fall through November delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color in the hardwoods. Winter camping is limited: many private parks close for the season, and while some state park facilities stay open year-round, expect snow, freezing temperatures, and reduced services.

How to book campgrounds near Grass Lake
Private campgrounds in the Grass Lake area, including Greenwood Acres Family Campground, Apple Creek Campground and RV Park, Hideaway RV Park, and Oaks Campgrounds, are booked directly through each property. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill early, so contact the campground several weeks ahead for full-hookup sites.
Waterloo State Recreation Area campsites, including the Equestrian campground, are booked through the Michigan DNR at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds. Check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., with quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of open, grassy private RV parks and wooded state park sites. Private campgrounds in the area typically offer electric, water, and sewer hookups, along with amenities like pools, playgrounds, and camp stores geared to families.
State park sites at Waterloo range from modern to rustic. The Equestrian campground is a good example of the rustic end: the campground is surrounded by hardwood forest at approximately 8400 Loveland Road in Chelsea, has 25 spacious, grassy sites available for campers with horses, and each site has a firepit, picnic table and picket posts, with vault toilets and a solar well pump for water. Visitors can take showers at the Sugarloaf Lake Campground May through October for a small fee.
Invasive insects and diseases have destroyed millions of trees in Michigan, often after hitching a ride on firewood, so campers should purchase only certified heat-treated firewood sold in state parks, local stores, and roadside stands rather than hauling it in.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Grass%20Lake%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Grass Lake?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Grass Lake. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. Renters must also be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly in the platform. If you are visiting from outside the United States, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. Then you are cleared to head out toward Waterloo Recreation Area with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Grass Lake knowing you have backup. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the peace of mind that fits your budget. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection from common issues like a cracked windshield on I-94 or a bump at a tight campground loop. Tip: review the coverage tiers during booking so you can roll out toward Portage Lake fully relaxed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Grass Lake RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy gets that, which is why every booking comes with a cancellation policy set by RVezy (not the host). There is a grace period after booking that allows for a full refund, with additional flexibility depending on how far out you cancel. If a host cancels your trip, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. Cancellation terms are handled centrally by RVezy rather than displayed on individual listings, so you do not have to compare fine print across hosts. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dream rig for that Jackson Hot Air Jubilee weekend, knowing you have options if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Grass Lake RV trip?
Absolutely, pets are welcome on plenty of rentals, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Grass Lake is easy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy, and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots (some charge a small pet fee, listed right on the page). Once you arrive, you've got great options: Waterloo Recreation Area allows leashed pets on most trails (though not on the swim beach), and Apple Creek Campground on Orban Road has wide grassy sites perfect for tail-wagging breaks. Pro tip: pack a 6-foot leash, which is required at all Michigan state parks, plus extra water bowls for those warm July afternoons.
www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?id=556&type=SPCGCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Grass Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Grass Lake is one of the best moves for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig directly to Portage Lake Campground, Sugarloaf Lake Campground, Apple Creek RV Park, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when searching listings, and message the host to confirm your address or campsite number. Delivery is typically priced per mile from the host's location, and many hosts within a short range of Grass Lake offer it. Tip: this is the smartest first move for a stress-free motorhome rental Grass Lake adventure.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Grass%20Lake%2C%20MichiganHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Grass Lake?
Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (filter for it on RVezy). Extra miles typically run $0.35 to $0.50 each, which is great to know when planning. From Grass Lake, you're perfectly positioned: Ann Arbor is about 25 miles east, downtown Detroit is roughly 75 miles, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 230 miles northwest, Mackinac City sits around 280 miles north, and Holland's Lake Michigan beaches are about 130 miles west. Tip: map your route before booking and ask the host for a custom mileage package if you're planning an ambitious RV road trip from Grass Lake.
nps.gov/slbe/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Grass Lake to park my RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Grass Lake. Top picks include Portage Lake Modern Campground inside Waterloo Recreation Area (electric sites, beach access, and trails right outside your door); Sugarloaf Lake Campground, also within Waterloo, known for shaded sites and a fishing pier; Apple Creek Resort & RV Park on Orban Road, a family favorite with a heated pool, mini-golf, and on-site trails; and Greenwood Acres Family Campground in nearby Jackson, with full hookups and a lake. Pro tip: state park sites often book months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve early through Michigan DNR Reservations.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to visit Grass Lake in an RV?
Late May through early October is prime season for a Grass Lake RV trip, with summer highs of 78 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit in July and crisp 55 to 70-degree days in September and October. June through August brings warm lake-swimming weather, the Jackson Hot Air Jubilee, and lively campgrounds (Holiday RV Campground operates May 1 through October 31). The smart-money pick is mid-September through mid-October, when daytime temps are gorgeous, mosquitoes are gone, and the maples around Waterloo Recreation Area light up red and gold. Winters are cold (lows often in the teens) and most private parks close, but rustic state sites stay open year-round. Pro tip: shoulder season equals cheaper RV rental in Grass Lake.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Totally, and you're far from alone (about half of RVezy renters are first-timers). Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving the rig, leveling it, using the awning, hooking up shore power, dumping tanks, and operating the propane and water systems. Around Grass Lake, the roads are forgiving for beginners: I-94 is wide and flat, the village streets are quiet, and Waterloo Recreation Area's campground loops are well-marked. If you're nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan, request delivery so you skip the highway entirely, and message the host before booking with any questions. You'll be steering with confidence by sunset.
michigan.gov/msp/divisions/traffic-safetyWhat happens if I get a flat tire or break down on the road?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a single phone call dispatches help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, tow assistance, and more anywhere you travel from Grass Lake. RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock, and your host is just a message away for quick questions about the rig itself. Tip: before pulling out of the driveway, save the roadside-assistance number to your phone, then enjoy the drive toward Hidden Lake Gardens or Michigan International Speedway with total peace of mind.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take the RV across the border into Canada from Grass Lake?
Yes, cross-border trips into Ontario are popular from Grass Lake since the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge are roughly 80 to 90 miles east, and the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron is about 120 miles northeast. Ask your host directly before booking, since insurance coverage for Canada varies by host and they will need to provide written permission. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, and declare any food, alcohol, or pets at the border. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals due to insurance restrictions. Pro tip: a Niagara Falls loop pairs perfectly with a few days at Waterloo Recreation Area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Grass Lake?
Budgeting fuel is easier than most people expect. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes run 8 to 14 mpg, and Class A motorhomes typically deliver 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn gas themselves, but your tow vehicle will lose 3 to 5 mpg while pulling one. Michigan gas prices typically sit close to the national average, with stations in Grass Lake, Jackson, and Chelsea right off I-94 (Exits 150, 156, and 159) being the most convenient fill-ups. Pro tip: top off in Jackson rather than at lakeside towns, where prices often climb 20 to 30 cents per gallon during summer weekends.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Grass Lake?
Lock in campgrounds early and you will thank yourself. Michigan state park campgrounds like Portage Lake and Sugarloaf Lake inside Waterloo Recreation Area can be reserved up to six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com, and summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often fill up the moment that window opens. Private parks like Apple Creek and Greenwood Acres typically book direct and fill 1 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends. Do not forget the Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry to state parks. Tip: midweek availability stays open much longer.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passportWhat are the local driving conditions like around Grass Lake?
You are in luck: Grass Lake sits in flat-to-gently-rolling southeast Michigan farmland, with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Interstate 94 runs straight through town (Exit 150 is your gateway), making it easy to head east to Ann Arbor or west to Jackson in a larger rig. Local country roads are narrow but well-paved. Watch for two things: deer at dawn and dusk (Jackson County reports high deer-vehicle collision rates), and winter snow if you are traveling November through March. Pro tip: check the Michigan Mi Drive site for real-time I-94 construction and closure alerts before you head out.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's inside the RVs available to rent in Grass Lake?
RVezy rentals near Grass Lake come stocked for real-deal road trips. Expect comfortable beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower on Class B, C, and A motorhomes and most travel trailers. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, roof and dash air conditioning, propane furnace, awning, outdoor speakers, and seat-belted seating for travel. Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons, so check the listing's amenities list. Tip: message the host before booking to confirm specific must-haves like a backup camera or a queen-versus-king bed, especially for longer Lake Michigan getaways.
michigan.gov/sos/vehicle/recreational-vehicles-watercraftWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Grass Lake RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental Grass Lake travelers love include bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for Portage Lake and Wolf Lake), camp chairs and outdoor tables, generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, propane refills, linen/bedding packages, and even firewood bundles. Each add-on is priced individually on the listing page, typically $10 to $50 per item or per night. Mileage policies and pickup/drop-off windows are set by each host, so you'll see those clearly before booking. Tip: bundle delivery + setup + linens + a kayak package for a totally turnkey arrival, then spend day one exploring the Eddy Discovery Center instead of unpacking.
www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?id=556&type=SPCGHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy charges your card through the platform when you book, so you never pay hosts directly outside the site. Your trip total includes the nightly rate, service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig, is held a few days before pickup and released after the trip wraps up without issues. To avoid hiccups, do a thorough walk-around video with your host at pickup and drop-off, check tank levels, and return the RV with the same fuel level. Tip: that 10-minute video can save you hundreds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I do a winter RV trip from Grass Lake?
Yes, and winter RVing around Grass Lake can be magical, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available on Waterloo Recreation Area trails. January temperatures average highs near 30 degrees Fahrenheit and lows in the upper teens, so look for RVs equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, a reliable propane furnace, and shore-power capability. Many private parks close November through April, but several rustic Waterloo and Pinckney Recreation Area sites stay open year-round. Use RVezy's filters to find four-season-ready rigs, and message the host about cold-weather prep. Pro tip: bring a heated water hose if you are staying more than a night with hookups.
weather.gov/dtx/What are the best road trip routes from Grass Lake?
Grass Lake is a launchpad for some of Michigan's best routes. The classic loop: head north on US-127 to Mackinac City (about 280 miles), ferry over to Mackinac Island for a day, then return down US-31 along Lake Michigan's beaches through Traverse City and Holland. Another favorite: drive west to Saugatuck (about 140 miles) for wineries and dunes. For a shorter weekend, the Irish Hills along US-12 are just 20 miles south, with Michigan International Speedway, Hidden Lake Gardens, and historic Walker Tavern all stops along the way. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (230 miles) is a bucket-list run. Pro tip: build in two nights at Sleeping Bear because one is never enough.
