Campgrounds near Harrison, Michigan
Harrison sits in Clare County in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula, at the north end of the 175-acre, all-sports Budd Lake. Wilson State Park offers a scenic escape on 36 wooded acres at the north end of Budd Lake in Clare County, with a modern campground, playground, picnic area and opportunities for fishing, paddling, swimming and day trips. The town itself is small and walkable, with grocery stores and restaurants close to the lakefront.
Private RV parks fill in around the state park. Countryside Campground and Cabins and Harrison RV Family Campground sit closest to town, while Hidden Hill Family Campground, The Lost Oaks Campground, and Camp Deer Trails are within a short drive and give access to the surrounding lakes and forest. Site mixes at these parks typically include full-hookup pads, electric-only sites, and rustic tent options.
The area is halfway between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and a 90-minute drive from Grand Rapids and Lansing, which makes Harrison a practical base for RV renters heading into central Michigan without committing to a long haul north.
Things to do around Harrison
Budd Lake is the main draw. A buoyed swim area is in the park's day-use area, with an accessible walkway to the water and floating chairs available to borrow, and the 175-acre lake is designated all-sports, so swimming, boating, kayaking, and fishing all work from the same shoreline.
Off-road riders have direct access to a major trail system. The Leota ORV Trailhead, managed by the Michigan DNR, offers over 55 miles of trails for larger ORVs and hundreds of miles for quads and smaller traditional ORVs, and the Fur Farm snowmobile trail starts just north of the city of Harrison and joins up with the Leota Trail. A valid Michigan ORV license and trail permit are required. Golf courses, county lakes, and small-town diners round out day trips from any of the local campgrounds.

Summer is the busiest window. Warm days, long evenings, and open swim beaches drive most of the demand at Wilson State Park and the private parks around town. Summers in Harrison are warm and humid, with daytime highs that average in the mid-70s and nighttime lows in the upper 50s, which is comfortable for lake activities without the heat extremes of destinations further south.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with easier availability. Spring is cool and wet, with lingering cold nights into April. Fall brings color through the hardwoods and cooler nights that suit campfires. Late spring through early fall is the most popular window for the Leota trail system, and autumn draws visitors for fall colors.
Winter shuts down most RV camping in the area. Winters are cold and snowy, with daytime highs averaging in the low 30s and nighttime lows in the low 20s, and snowmobile traffic replaces RV traffic on the trail network. Renters looking for a winter trip should confirm which parks stay open and whether water service is on.
How to book campgrounds near Harrison
Wilson State Park is reserved through Michigan's state system. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance, and reservations can be made at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Popular campgrounds and dates fill up fast, often within minutes of the booking window opening.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds, and non-resident RV renters can buy one at the park entrance.
Private parks near Harrison, including Countryside Campground and Cabins, Harrison RV Family Campground, Hidden Hill Family Campground, The Lost Oaks Campground, and Camp Deer Trails, book directly through the operators. Holiday weekends and any dates tied to ORV events fill earliest, so RV renters should lock in dates as soon as travel plans are firm.
What to expect at Harrison campgrounds
Site setups skew toward standard Midwest state-park and private-park layouts. The modern campground at Wilson State Park is divided into north and south loops, most sites are generous in size, shaded by oaks, maples and pines, and overlook Budd Lake, and there is 20/30-amp electrical service on each site plus a sanitation station. Some sites offer 50-amp service and pull-through access, and full-hookup sites are available.
Expect some road noise. The campground is right by the main road, and the first row of campsites especially is subject to road noise. Requesting an interior or lake-facing site helps.
Private parks around Harrison run the usual mix of laundry, showers, playgrounds, and camp stores. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around town, and grocery resupply is a short drive from any of the listed campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Harrison, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Harrison, MI?
RV rental in Harrison, MI is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy Northern Michigan's lake country. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 per night. Harrison's shoulder seasons (late May and September) usually offer the best value, while July weekends around the Clare County Fair book up fast at peak rates. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Many owners offer 10 to 20 percent off rentals of five nights or more, which makes a Harrison RV trip even more affordable than a hotel stay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harrison,%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Harrison, MI?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Harrison, MI. Michigan does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal RV use under 26,000 pounds, which covers every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and most Class A rigs on RVezy. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps you fully road-legal across Michigan. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV covered if something happens during my trip in Harrison?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore Harrison's backroads with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your rental, and you choose your coverage level at checkout based on how much extra reassurance you want. Whether you're parked at Wilson State Park or heading north on US-127, you're backed by RVezy's coverage. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking. Bumping up a tier costs only a few dollars per night and can dramatically lower your out-of-pocket exposure if something unexpected happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Harrison RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Harrison, MI, not individual hosts, so you get the same fair treatment whether you book a campervan or a fifth wheel. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel from your trip start date, and the full policy is available in the RVezy Help Center. Major disruptions like severe winter storms or named natural disasters are also taken into account, which matters in Clare County where lake-effect snow can roll in fast. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Wilson State Park weekends, and reach out to RVezy support directly if plans shift. The team is reachable before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Harrison?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Harrison is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) onboard. Harrison is a fantastic dog destination: Wilson State Park allows leashed pets in the campground and on the day-use trails (though not on the swim beach), and the surrounding Au Sable State Forest has miles of leash-friendly two-tracks. Many local campgrounds, including Harrison RV Family Campground and Hidden Hill Family Campground, are openly dog-friendly too. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and pack a long lead so your pup can lounge outside the rig leash-legal.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/wilsonCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Harrison?
Yes, RV delivery in Harrison is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip towing or driving a big rig. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Wilson State Park, Harrison RV Family Campground, or a private lakefront cottage on Budd Lake. They'll level it, hook up power and water, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end of your stay. Filter by Delivery when you search to see options. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with mileage, so booking a host based in Harrison or nearby Clare keeps costs lowest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harrison,%20MichiganHow far can I drive on a Harrison RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
Mileage policies are flexible, and yes, RV rental with unlimited mileage is available from many Harrison hosts on RVezy. Most listings include a generous daily allotment (typically 100 to 150 miles), with extra miles priced around $0.30 to $0.45 each. From Harrison you're about 35 miles south of Houghton Lake, roughly 100 miles to Traverse City, around 130 miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and about 175 miles north to the Mackinac Bridge. Each listing shows its exact mileage policy before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-stop Pure Michigan loop, sort by unlimited mileage to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harrison,%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds for RV camping in Harrison?
You've got fantastic options right in town. Wilson State Park (910 N. First Street) is the marquee spot, with 158 modern sites on Budd Lake, 20/30-amp electric, a sanitation station, and a swim beach, all walkable to downtown Harrison. Harrison RV Family Campground on Hampton Road offers 100 sites with full hookups and stays open year-round, perfect for snowmobile season. Hidden Hill Family Campground on N. Clare Ave is family- and dog-friendly with big rigs welcome. The Lost Oaks Campground sits right next to the Leota ORV Trailhead if you're bringing toys. Pro tip: Wilson reserves up to six months ahead through Michigan DNR Reservations and fills fast for July and August weekends, so book early.
michigan.gov/recsearch/parks/wilsonWhen is the best time to visit Harrison, MI in an RV?
Harrison is a true four-season RV destination, but late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for most travelers. June through August brings warm, partly cloudy days with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s, ideal for swimming at Budd Lake and fishing the surrounding inland lakes. September and early October bring crisp days, brilliant fall color across the Au Sable State Forest, and far smaller crowds at Wilson State Park. Winter trips are possible too if you choose a four-season rig. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of September for the best mix of mild weather, fall foliage, and easy campground availability on your Harrison RV trip.
weather.gov/dtx/Can I rent an RV in Harrison in winter?
Yes, and a winter RV trip in Harrison can be genuinely magical. Harrison RV Family Campground stays open year-round and sits minutes from groomed snowmobile trails, with downhill skiing and snow tubing at Snow Snake Mountain just south of town. January temperatures average a high near 27°F and a low around 12°F, with roughly 50 to 60 inches of snow per season, so you'll want a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a reliable furnace. Filter RVezy listings for four-season or winter-ready features, and message the host to confirm winter operation. Pro tip: ask about skirting and a heated water hose to make cold-weather camping much more comfortable.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Harrison?
First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in a low-key place like Harrison. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through the generator, slides, holding tanks, propane, and driving tips before you leave the driveway. You can also message your host through the platform anytime during the trip with questions. Harrison's quiet two-lane roads and flat lake country make it one of the friendliest places in Michigan to learn. Pro tip: ask for a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip. They drive like an oversized truck and fit easily into Wilson State Park's standard sites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Wilson State Park or pulled over on M-61. Roadside covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified repair facility. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the rig's VIN and license plate. It speeds up any service call dramatically.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Harrison RV rental to Canada or other states?
Cross-border road trips are often possible: many RVezy hosts in Michigan allow travel into Canada (Ontario is roughly three hours from Harrison via the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron) as long as you confirm it with them in advance so the proper insurance documentation can be issued. Travel anywhere in the lower 48 states is also commonly allowed, opening up classic routes like Harrison to Pictured Rocks or Harrison to Door County, Wisconsin. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: message the host before booking, confirm your route in writing, and carry your passport plus the host's written permission at the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays manageable. Class B campervans in Harrison average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes run 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A rigs land around 7 to 10 MPG. Trucks pulling travel trailers usually see 10 to 13 MPG. Michigan gas prices typically hover around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon, with Harrison-area stations on M-61 and Old US-27 generally cheaper than Traverse City or Mackinaw City. For a typical weekend RV road trip from Harrison up to Higgins Lake and back (about 80 miles round trip), figure $30 to $60 in fuel for most motorhomes. Pro tip: top off in Clare or Harrison before heading north, where prices climb noticeably in resort towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Harrison?
Earlier is better, but Harrison is more forgiving than Michigan's west-coast hotspots. Wilson State Park accepts reservations up to six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com, and weekends from late June through Labor Day sell out 2 to 3 months ahead. Private parks like Harrison RV Family Campground, Hidden Hill, and The Lost Oaks usually have availability 2 to 4 weeks out, even in summer. For the Clare County Fair week in August or the Frost Bite Open ice golf tournament in winter, lock in your spot as early as possible. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often find walk-up sites at Wilson even in July, perfect for spontaneous trips.
midnrreservations.com/What are the driving conditions like around Harrison?
Driving in Harrison is genuinely relaxing, even for RV first-timers. The town sits along US-127, a four-lane divided highway with easy on-ramps and gentle grades, and local roads like M-61 and Old US-27 are flat, lightly trafficked two-lanes through forest and lake country. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk (Clare County is one of Michigan's most deer-dense areas) and slow down for logging trucks on backroads. In winter, lake-effect snow squalls can drop visibility fast, so check MDOT's Mi Drive map before heading out November through March. Pro tip: avoid the Friday-evening northbound rush on US-127, when Detroit and Lansing weekenders flood the route to cottage country.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat hookups and dump stations can I expect at Harrison campgrounds?
You'll find solid amenities across local campgrounds. Wilson State Park offers 20/30-amp electric on every site, a sanitation dump station (with $10 drive-up access for non-campers), potable water fill, and modern restrooms with showers. Harrison RV Family Campground has full hookups (water, sewer, 20/30/50-amp electric) on most sites and stays open year-round with heated restrooms in winter. Hidden Hill and The Lost Oaks offer a mix of electric, water-electric, and full hookups. Cell service from Verizon and AT&T is reliable throughout town. Pro tip: if you're boondocking around the 20 lakes in 20 minutes area, the Wilson State Park dump station is the most convenient public option in Clare County for filling fresh water and emptying tanks.
michigan.gov/recsearch/parks/wilsonWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Harrison?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. Most motorhome rental Harrison listings sleep 4 to 8 people across a queen bed, bunks, and convertible dinettes, with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, three-burner stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both furnace and roof AC, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on the road. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, an awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays at one of Harrison's quieter inland lakes. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often included too. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm essentials like a coffee maker or grill before you pack.
michigan.org/property/wilson-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options do Harrison hosts offer?
Harrison hosts are known for being flexible and accommodating. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $50), kitchen kits ($25 to $40), outdoor gear like kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes (perfect for Budd Lake or the Muskegon River), generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Harrison, with most offering delivery to Wilson State Park, Harrison RV Family Campground, or other Clare County campgrounds for a mileage-based fee. Mileage policies and add-on pricing are spelled out clearly on every listing page. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen package can actually save money versus buying gear or driving an unfamiliar rig yourself, especially for a first-time renter.
michigan.org/property/wilson-state-parkHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, never in cash with the host. Your rental total, taxes, and protection plan are charged to your card when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with tanks and fuel as outlined, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, including the odometer and fuel gauge. It's the best way to avoid any deposit dispute on your RV rental in Michigan.
