Campgrounds and RV parks near Hartford, MI

Lake Michigan beaches are the primary draw. Covert Park Beach and Campground sits within the protected Critical Dunes with about a quarter mile of beach, and Van Buren State Park, a short drive north, has a mile of sandy shoreline and a dog beach nearby. South Haven's harbor, lighthouse, and Michigan Maritime Museum add a walkable in-town option on rainy afternoons. Cyclists can ride the 4-mile paved Van Buren State Park Spur Trail into South Haven, then continue on the Kal-Haven Trail State Park, which runs 33.5 miles east toward Kalamazoo. Anglers fish inland waters such as Knickerbocker Lake at Oak Shores Campground, and families use the pool, sandy beach, and boat rentals on-site. The surrounding countryside is dense with orchards, u-pick berry farms, and wineries along the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail.

The camping season in southwest Michigan runs roughly mid-April through mid-October. Van Buren State Park typically operates April through November and accepts reservations up to six months in advance through the Michigan DNR. Private parks follow similar windows: Oak Shores Campground opens in mid-April, and Covert Park Beach and Campground runs a May 15 to October 15 camp season with online booking that opens in the winter for the coming year. Spring brings variable weather, cool lake temperatures, and lighter crowds, but also the wettest ground conditions in some inland sites. Summer is peak season. Independence Day, the National Blueberry Festival in South Haven, and Labor Day weekends fill lakeside campgrounds weeks or months ahead, and weekend sites at Van Buren State Park regularly sell out. Fall offers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fruit-harvest activity through mid-October, after which most private parks close. Winter camping is limited: state park day-use areas remain open with a Recreation Passport, but modern campgrounds shut down and lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan can be heavy.

Site utilities vary widely. Van Buren State Park offers electric-only sites with no water or sewer at the pad, so RVers should fill fresh tanks on the way in and use the on-site dump station. Covert Park Beach and Campground has developed sites with water and 30-amp electric plus a dump station, and can accommodate RVs up to about 32 feet. Covert / South Haven KOA Holiday, Dune Lake Campground, and Oak Shores Campground offer a broader range including 30- and 50-amp service, with most sites at Oak Shores including water, electric, and sewer. Expect sandy soils, mature hardwood cover at many parks, and mosquitoes near inland ponds in early summer. Cell coverage is uneven, generally solid near the interstates and weaker along the dune-belt sites. Michigan restricts moving firewood between areas, so buy it locally at camp stores.
