Campgrounds and RV parks near Hastings, MI

Yankee Springs Recreation Area anchors outdoor recreation in the area, with roughly 30 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 12 miles of mountain biking trails, 9 miles of equestrian trails, and a six-mile segment of the North Country Trail. Nine inland lakes support fishing for panfish, northern pike, muskie, and bass, plus paddling, boating, and two buoyed swim areas. Notable stops include Devil's Soupbowl, a glacial kettle formation, and the Graves Hill overlook. Closer to town, the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail is a multi-use rail-trail running through Hastings and Middleville. Thornapple Lake, adjacent to Camp Thornapple Inc, is a 409-acre lake used for boating, water skiing, tubing, and fishing for muskie, walleye, pike, bass, and panfish.

The camping season around Hastings runs roughly late April through early October, mirroring the operating windows of most private parks and the Michigan DNR modern campground season. Camp Thornapple Inc, for example, operates from about May through early October, and Whispering Waters Campground and Kayak Rental is open from late April through early October along the Thornapple River. Summer is peak. July and August bring warm, humid days, active mosquito and biting-fly pressure near the marshes at Yankee Springs, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Weekend sites at the Gun Lake modern campground typically sell out well in advance, and holiday weekends fill fastest. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with better site availability but chillier nights. Rustic sites at Deep Lake stay open later into fall for hunters and mountain bikers. Winter closes most private RV parks entirely. Yankee Springs trails remain open for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, groomed fat-tire biking, and ice fishing, but modern campground services shut down.

Sites near Hastings range from full-hookup RV pads to rustic tent options. Camp Thornapple Inc has 136 full-hookup sites with cement patios plus water-and-electric and primitive sites on 32 wooded acres along Thornapple Lake, with a bath house, hot showers, and a private swimming area. Whispering Waters Campground and Kayak Rental caters heavily to seasonal campers on the Thornapple River, so short-stay availability can be limited on peak weekends. Expect wooded, mostly level sites, sandy soil, and mixed cell coverage away from town. Check-in at state parks starts at 3 p.m. with checkout at 1 p.m., quiet hours run 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., and only certified heat-treated firewood is permitted to slow the spread of invasive pests. Pets must be leashed and are barred from designated swim beaches.
