Camping near Houghton Lake, Michigan
Houghton Lake sits in Roscommon County in north-central Lower Michigan and is Michigan's largest inland lake at 20,044 acres. The town of Houghton Lake and neighboring Prudenville wrap the south and west shores, putting RV renters within minutes of boat launches, tackle shops, grocery stores, and the M-55/US-127 junction.
Private RV parks in the immediate area include Wooded Acres Campground, West Houghton Lake Campground, Houghton Lake Travel Park, Denton Township Trailer Park, and Great Circle Campgrounds. These properties cover the range most renters need: full-hookup pull-throughs for larger rigs, shaded family sites, and longer-stay options. West Houghton Lake Campground offers partially wooded sites across the street from the west shore DNR boat launch and has full hook-up sites, a camp store, dump station, propane filling station, modern bathrooms, and a playground.
Public camping is also nearby. The Houghton Lake State Forest Campground on the northern shore has 50 sites for tent or small trailer use, some able to accommodate a 40-foot vehicle or trailer, and is open from late April to mid-September.
Things to do around Houghton Lake
The lake itself drives the trip. Walleye, pike, perch, and bass fishing, pontoon and ski boating, tubing, and swimming off public beaches keep families busy from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Public launches ring the shoreline, and shore fishing works from several township parks.
Day trips are easy. North Higgins Lake and South Higgins Lake state parks sit about fifteen minutes north with sandy beaches and hiking trails, and the Muskegon and Au Sable rivers offer paddling and trout water within a short drive. In winter the area shifts to ice fishing, snowmobiling on groomed trails, and cross-country skiing.
In town, families use the golf courses, mini-golf, ice cream stands, and the Reedsburg Dam area on the Muskegon River. The M-55 corridor covers most restocking and repair needs without a long drive from any campground.

The main RV season runs mid-April through mid-October. Private parks around Houghton Lake typically open in April and close by mid-October, with a handful, such as West Houghton Lake Campground, operating year-round for winter anglers and snowmobilers. State forest camping is a shorter window: the Houghton Lake State Forest Campground is open from late April to mid-September.
Summer weekends from late June through mid-August are the busiest, especially around the Fourth of July and Tip-Up Town weekends. Sites at popular private parks fill weeks out, and lakefront full-hookup sites go first. Late May and the first two weeks of September are the sweet spot for shoulder-season travelers who want cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations.
Winter brings deep cold and heavy snow, with the snowy period typically stretching from November into April. Many private parks pause hookups or reduce services during the coldest months. Confirm winter status with the park before booking a January or February trip.
How to book a site
Private campgrounds in the Houghton Lake area take reservations directly by phone, through their own websites, or through third-party platforms. For summer weekends, book eight to twelve weeks ahead for the closest lakefront and full-hookup sites. Midweek arrivals almost always open more options.
For Michigan state park camping in the region, use the state's central system. Campsites, lodging, and harbor slips can be reserved up to six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. The rolling window means each day another day six months out becomes available, and popular sites can be booked within minutes of opening. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state park and forest campgrounds. Most state forest campgrounds, including Houghton Lake State Forest, operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks in the Houghton Lake area lean family-friendly and RV-focused. Expect a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and rustic sites, along with camp stores, laundry, playgrounds, and in some cases pools and stocked ponds. Sites vary from open and sunny to heavily shaded under mature pines, so ask about big-rig access, satellite line of sight, and pull-through availability when booking.
Cell service is generally reliable across the Houghton Lake and Prudenville area on major carriers. Well water is common at private parks and is typically filtered. Bring bug spray for late spring and early summer, layers for cool nights even in July, and a leash for pets, which most parks welcome.
Roads in are well-signed off US-127 and M-55. Traffic slows on summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so plan check-ins accordingly.

Houghton Lake State Forest Campground includes first-come-first-served sites, so midweek arrivals often score a site without a reservation. michigan.gov/dnr/managing-resources/boatingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure, all handled through RVezy, never directly with the host. You pay at booking with a credit or debit card, and your total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit (set by the host, often several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is held separately from the booking payment and released after a smooth return. To avoid any deposit hassle, do a walk-around video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, return with the fuel and propane levels noted on the agreement, and empty the tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for getting the most out of Houghton Lake?
Here's something most first-timers miss: the sunset view from the north shore of the lake along M-55 is one of the best in the area, so plan your campsite arrival so you can catch it on night one. If you're visiting in winter, the Tip-Up Town USA festival in January is a one-of-a-kind Michigan experience, and many RVezy hosts offer winter-ready rentals with heated holding tanks and shore-power hookups, so you can actually camp lakeside in the snow. For summer trips, launch a kayak from a public access site early morning when the water glasses out, you'll likely spot loons.
