Camping near Ida, Michigan
Ida sits in Monroe County in southeast Michigan, a short drive from Lake Erie, the River Raisin, and the Michigan-Ohio border. The area is flat farmland and small towns, with most campgrounds clustered along the Raisin corridor, near Petersburg, and along the Lake Erie shoreline in and around Monroe. It works well as a base for lake fishing, paddling, and day trips to Toledo, Ann Arbor, and metro Detroit.
RV renters have a mix of private resorts and one nearby state park to choose from. Closest options include River Raisin Canoe Livery for paddlers, Monroe County/Toledo North KOA Holiday for full-service family camping, and Pirolli Park RV Resort, Covered Wagon Camp Resort, and Harbortown RV Resort for longer stays with pools, laundry, and hookups.
William C. Sterling State Park, the only Michigan state park on Lake Erie, is the main public option and features a modern campground, booked through the Michigan DNR system.
Things to do around Ida
Water is the main draw. Paddlers can put in on the River Raisin at River Raisin Canoe Livery, and Lake Erie access at Sterling State Park offers about a mile of sandy shoreline, with walleye and perch fishing from shore and boats. Kayak rentals are available at the campground office from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
History is close by. The River Raisin Heritage Trail connects the park to downtown Monroe, local parks and trails, and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park, which commemorates the War of 1812.
Families staying at Monroe County/Toledo North KOA Holiday can use on-site amenities without leaving the campground. Day trips reach the Toledo Zoo, Cabela's in Dundee, and metro Detroit attractions within about an hour.

The core camping season in southeast Michigan runs from mid-April through late October. Monroe County/Toledo North KOA Holiday operates on a similar seasonal calendar, and Sterling State Park Campground is open from April through the first weekend of November. A few private parks, including Harbortown RV Resort, stay open year-round.
Summer is peak. July and August bring highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit, warm Lake Erie water, and the busiest weekends, when locals fill lakefront sites and boat traffic peaks. Humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with daytime temperatures typically in the 50s to 70s and better site availability midweek. Wind off Lake Erie can be strong in shoulder seasons, so awnings and canopies should be secured. The lakeside is notorious for mosquitoes, so bring bug spray. Winter camping is limited to a handful of year-round private parks; state park sites and most seasonal resorts are closed.

How to book near Ida
Sterling State Park and other Michigan state park campgrounds are booked through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Campsite reservations open six months in advance, and cabins and campsites can fill quickly for summer and holiday weekends, so book at least three months in advance. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds.
Private campgrounds set their own rules. Monroe County/Toledo North KOA Holiday books through KOA.com, and Harbortown RV Resort, Pirolli Park RV Resort, and Covered Wagon Camp Resort take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Holiday weekends, especially Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, should be booked several months in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Most Monroe County campgrounds sit on flat, open ground with limited natural shade, so RV renters should plan on running awnings and using air conditioning in summer. At Sterling State Park most sites are paved and generous in size, and all sites have either 20- or 30-amp service, with 50-amp service available on 76 sites and a sanitation station on-site.
Private resorts near Ida generally offer 30/50-amp service, water, sewer, laundry, and pool access. Cell service on major carriers is reliable across the area, useful for remote work stays.
Wind off Lake Erie is a routine consideration, and mosquitoes can be heavy near the marshes in early summer. Michigan asks visitors to purchase only certified heat-treated firewood sold locally, rather than transporting firewood from other parts of the state, to help slow the spread of invasive tree pests.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ida%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ida, Michigan?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ida, MI. Michigan does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels rented through RVezy. You simply need to meet RVezy's approved driver requirements (generally 25 or older with a valid license), and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking platform, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from another country? An International Driving Permit (IDP) paired with your home license works. Most renters are surprised how quickly the approval process moves, often within a few hours of submitting your booking request.

You are covered from day one. Every RV rental in Ida, MI booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damages to the vehicle during your trip, and at checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort, not the host. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap on the way to Sterling State Park does not ruin your trip. Pair that with the host's pre-trip walkthrough and you have a safety net most first-time renters did not know existed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that grace period depends on how far out you cancel, which is helpful in Michigan where a sudden Lake Erie storm can change weekend plans. You will see the exact terms during checkout and inside your RVezy account, and the support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything comes up. Go ahead and reserve that summer week, you have flexibility on your side.

Sterling's beach areas allow leashed pets on most trails and campground loops, though designated swim beaches are off-limits. Lake Erie Metropark, about 20 minutes north, has dog-friendly shoreline trails too. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your pup's size, it almost always speeds up approval and they'll often leave a bowl or towel waiting for your four-legged co-pilot.

Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile round trip. Just filter for Delivery on the search page, and if you're a first-time renter this is the single best upgrade you can pick.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/parks/sterlingHow far can I drive, and what are the mileage policies?

midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to RV in Ida, Michigan?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Ida, with daytime highs ranging from the upper 60s in May to the mid-80s in July and August, then easing to the 60s and 70s through September. July and early August are warmest and busiest, while June offers blooming countryside and fewer crowds. September and the first two weeks of October are a local secret, with crisp air, fall colors across the River Raisin valley, and often discounted campsite rates. Winter RVing is possible but tanks can freeze in sub-freezing temperatures, so if you are going November through March, look for a four-season rig with heated tanks. Pro tip: aim for the second weekend of September for peak weather plus open campsites.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving one from Ida?
You will do great, and you will not be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, water, propane, and the dump valves, plus most are a quick text away during your trip. For first time renting an RV, Ida is an ideal launch point because the surrounding Monroe County roads are flat, straight, and lightly trafficked, very different from city driving in Detroit or Toledo. Start with a travel trailer under 24 feet or a Class C motorhome, both are easier to handle than people expect. Pro tip: drive the back roads to Sterling State Park on day one to get comfortable before any highway miles, you will be a pro by sunset.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Ida, MI booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering items like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. One call gets a technician dispatched to wherever you are, whether that is the shoulder of I-75 outside Monroe or a backroad near Petersburg. Your host is also a direct text away for quick questions about quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the propane shutoff, the breaker panel, and the fuse box during your walkthrough, it makes troubleshooting on the road five times faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ida RV rental on a cross-border or interstate road trip?
Yes, and the routes are fantastic. An RV road trip from Ida, MI puts you within easy reach of the entire Great Lakes region: north to Mackinaw City (about 300 miles), west to Chicago (about 250 miles), east into Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline via Sandusky (about 60 miles), and south to the Hocking Hills (about 180 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host's permission and insurance, so message them before booking if Niagara Falls or Point Pelee National Park is on your list. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring your passport for any Canadian crossing, and remember the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit is only about 35 minutes away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel during my RV trip?
Easy to plan. Michigan gas prices typically run $3.20 to $3.80 per gallon, and diesel sits a bit higher. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs get 6 to 10, and travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but drop your tow vehicle's mileage by 30 to 40 percent. For a typical weekend RV rental Michigan loop from Ida to Sterling State Park and back (under 50 miles), fuel runs $20 to $40. A longer 500-mile trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes might cost $150 to $250 in gas. Pro tip: fill up at the Costco or Sam's Club in Monroe before heading out, prices are usually $0.20 to $0.40 cheaper than along I-75.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ida?
Earlier is better, and Michigan makes it easy. Sterling State Park and other Michigan state park campgrounds open reservations 6 months out through the Michigan DNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often sell out quickly after release. Private parks like Harbortown RV Resort and KOA campgrounds in the area usually open bookings further ahead and are often easier to snag last-minute. Weekday and shoulder-season sites often have openings even a week out. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for exactly 6 months before your target Saturday morning Eastern time, that is when DNR sites drop, and have your rig length and Recreation Passport ready to check out fast.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Ida, MI?
Driving an RV around Ida is genuinely relaxing, the area is flat farmland and gently rolling country, with US-23 and I-75 just minutes away for easy access north to Detroit or south to Toledo. Local roads like Lewis Avenue and Ida West Road have wide lanes and minimal traffic, perfect for getting used to a bigger rig. The main thing to watch for is sudden lake-effect weather off Lake Erie in spring and fall, plus the occasional summer thunderstorm. Avoid driving the Detroit downtown loop or the low clearances near Toledo's Anthony Wayne Trail in anything over 11 feet tall. Pro tip: check MDOT's Mi Drive map before any longer haul, it flags construction zones that often pop up on I-75 in summer.

Potable water fills are available at the park. Pro tip: pick up a Michigan Recreation Passport when you register your vehicle or buy one at the park gate, it gets you into every Michigan state park for the year and pays for itself in two visits.

You have plenty of legal options. Overnight parking on Ida's residential streets is not permitted, so always choose a campground or approved lot. Pro tip: combine a Cabela's overnight with a sunrise visit to Sterling State Park's beach, it is a classic southeast Michigan RV move.
