Ithaca sits in Gratiot County in central Michigan, roughly halfway between Lansing and Mt. Pleasant. The town is the Gratiot County seat, at an elevation of around 750 feet. The surrounding farmland is dotted with small private lakes and river frontage along the Pine and Maple rivers, which shape most of the local camping.
RV travelers here choose from a short list of nearby private parks. Just In Time Campground and Leisure Lake Family Campground sit closest to town, with Lake of Dreams Campground and River Ridge Campground within roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive. Saginaw Chippewa Campground, near Mt. Pleasant, adds shuttle access to Soaring Eagle Casino for travelers who want a resort-style base.
The camping landscape around Ithaca leans heavily toward family-focused private parks, with additional state forest and county options within a 30-mile radius. Most visitors use Ithaca as a low-key basecamp rather than a destination in itself, with day trips reaching Alma, Mt. Pleasant, and the Pine River corridor.

The camping season in central Michigan is short. Most private campgrounds around Ithaca operate on a seasonal basis from spring through mid-October. Saginaw Chippewa Campground runs from April 1 through October 31. Expect similar windows at Just In Time, Leisure Lake, Lake of Dreams, and River Ridge, with limited or no services outside those months.
Summer is peak, running from mid-June through Labor Day. Advance reservations are important, particularly for summer weekends when lakeside sites fill quickly. Many private parks hold a large share of sites as seasonal rentals for the full summer, so the transient inventory is smaller than the total site count suggests. Weekday arrivals give the best odds of walk-in availability.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with a real risk of overnight frost through May and again from mid-September. Winter camping is limited to a handful of state parks in the wider region that keep loops open year-round. Local private parks close and drain water lines.
How to book campgrounds near Ithaca
Private parks around Ithaca take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites, with some also listed on third-party platforms such as Campspot. Popular weekends, especially Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, book out months ahead. Call as soon as dates are set, and confirm site length, hookup type, and slide-out clearance for the specific rig.
For Michigan state park and recreation area campgrounds in the wider region, use the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com. Campsites, lodging, and harbor slips can be booked up to six months in advance of the arrival date, and shelters up to 12 months in advance. The six-month rolling window means each day another day six months out opens for booking, and popular sites can fill within minutes. Most state forest campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds.
What to expect
Sites near Ithaca tend to be compact and grassy, with gravel pads at the more RV-focused parks. Water and electric hookups are common at private campgrounds; full hookups vary by park, and most sites without sewer rely on a central dump station. Saginaw Chippewa Campground provides 30-amp and 50-amp electric plus water at the site, with a shared dump station, and accommodates rigs up to 65 feet.
Expect a family-park atmosphere rather than a wilderness one. Many private parks rent a large share of sites as seasonal spots for the whole summer, so weekend crowds skew toward returning regulars, kids, and golf carts. Playgrounds, swim areas, and weekend activities are common.
Cell service is generally usable on major carriers across Gratiot and Isabella counties. Mosquitoes peak in June and early July near river and lake sites, so pack repellent.
