Campgrounds near Lake Michigan Beach
Lake Michigan Beach is an unincorporated community on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in Van Buren County, between the towns of Covert and South Haven. The area sits inside Michigan's protected critical-dunes zone, and campgrounds here trade on short walks to sand beaches, dune bluffs, and Lake Michigan sunsets.
RV renters have a mix of options within a short drive. Covert Park Beach and Campground is a township-run park with 62 sites on 50 acres, developed sites with water and 30-amp hookups, a dump station on site, and can accommodate most RVs up to 32 feet in length. Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday and Covert / South Haven KOA Holiday sit slightly inland and offer full-service private-park amenities, while Dune Lake Campground provides an inland-lake alternative a few miles south of Covert.
Eden Springs Park at the House of David, in Benton Harbor, rounds out the list as a historic property with camping on the grounds. Together the five options cover most trip styles, from full-hookup family bases to rustic dune camping.
Things to do near Lake Michigan Beach
The beach itself is the main draw. Covert Park offers access to a quarter mile of pristine beach on Lake Michigan, along with picnic areas, grills, a playground, washrooms, and walking trails. Swimming, sunset watching, and beachcombing fill most afternoons in season.
For active days, the Kal-Haven Trail is a paved, accessible bike path with 33.5 miles of paths across Southwest Michigan, accessible less than a mile from Covert Park, with rides possible to South Haven and back. Covert Park also offers kayak and paddle board rentals. Van Buren State Park adds more dune hiking a couple of miles up the coast.
South Haven, roughly ten minutes north, offers a working harbor, ice cream shops, marinas, and the Michigan Maritime Museum. Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, to the south, add wineries, farm stands, and downtown dining within easy RV range.

The camping season here is short and defined by the lake. Covert Park offers single-room cabins as well as primitive and developed RV sites for campers May 15 to October 15, which is typical for shoreline parks in southwest Michigan. Private parks like Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday and Covert / South Haven KOA Holiday generally open earlier in spring and stretch later into fall, but most amenities align with the summer window.
July and August are peak season. Lake Michigan water is warmest late in summer, beaches are busiest, and weekend sites at township and state parks fill weeks in advance. Weekdays remain noticeably quieter across the area.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for renters who want cooler temperatures and open sites. Fall brings changing leaves along inland routes and reliable Lake Michigan sunsets, though nights drop quickly after mid-October. Winter closes most campgrounds; snow, wind off the lake, and freezing temperatures are the norm from December through February.
How to book a campground near Lake Michigan Beach
Reservation systems vary by park. Covert Park's camp season runs May 15 to October 15, and reservations begin on April 1. Bookings are handled through covertpark.com. Summer weekends fill quickly, so booking well in advance is strongly advised.
KOA properties, including Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday and Covert / South Haven KOA Holiday, are booked through the KOA website or app, which shows live availability and site dimensions useful for matching an RV rental. Dune Lake Campground and Eden Springs Park at the House of David handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
Before booking, confirm site length and hookup amps against the rental RV's specifications. Covert Park's developed sites offer water and 30-amp hookups and can accommodate most RVs up to 32 feet in length.
What to expect
Expect a mix of shaded, wooded loops and open sites shaped by the dune terrain. Nestled in the dunes along Lake Michigan, Covert Park has wooded lots with great shade, and all campsites are within a five-minute walk to the beach. Two beach access paths, one flat and one via a staircase, make reaching the water manageable for most campers.
Cell coverage along the immediate shoreline can be weak at some sites. KOA properties inland typically have stronger signal and Wi-Fi at sites.
Dogs are welcome at most campgrounds but usually restricted from the main swim beaches. Pack layers, bug spray for wooded loops, and beach gear. Covert Park offers ice and local seasoned firewood at the camp store.

A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Michigan Beach. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes, so the same license that gets you to work gets you to the dunes. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can match it to your comfort level. You're covered. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every booking, including a money-back grace period right after you book, so reserving your Lake Michigan Beach RV trip is genuinely low-risk. Cancellation terms depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, so the closer to departure, the less flexible it gets. The full policy details are shown on the RVezy website during checkout, and the policy is set by RVezy (not the host). Pro tip: book early to lock in prime summer dates at Warren Dunes, knowing you have flexibility if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lake Michigan Beach RV trip?
Absolutely, and you're in one of the best regions in the Midwest for dogs. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Michigan Beach, so just check the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see your options instantly. Warren Dunes State Park, just 15 minutes south, welcomes leashed pets in much of the park, and Van Buren State Park up the coast also welcomes leashed dogs in the campground. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask about their preferred cleanup routine. Most are happy to share local dog-walking spots.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lake Michigan Beach?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Michigan Beach is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig down Blue Star Highway. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at Warren Dunes State Park, Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman, or even your rented driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: delivery fees usually depend on distance, so picking a campground within 30 miles of the host keeps costs down. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Lake Michigan Beach without ever towing a thing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106074-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on my Lake Michigan Beach RV trip?
Lake Michigan Beach is a fantastic launch pad for road trips. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. From Lake Michigan Beach, you're roughly 95 miles to Chicago, 50 miles to South Bend, Indiana, 110 miles to Grand Rapids via I-196, and about 280 miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (a classic Michigan RV trip). You can see the daily mileage allowance and overage rate right on each listing before booking. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Lake Michigan Beach up the entire west coast of the state, message hosts who advertise high or unlimited mileage to avoid surprise fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Michigan%20Beach%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Michigan Beach, MI?
You've got incredible options within a short drive. Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer (15 minutes south) is the crown jewel, with about 1,952 acres, 3 miles of beach, and over 200 modern campsites. Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman puts you right on the lake with electric sites. Covert Park Beach and Campground (about 25 minutes south) offers RV sites tucked into preserved dunes with beach access. Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday is a full-hookup family favorite just inland. Pro tip: book Warren Dunes the moment your six-month reservation window opens at midnrreservations.com. Summer weekends sell out within minutes.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/warren-dunesWhen is the best time to visit Lake Michigan Beach in an RV?
Late May through September is the sweet spot for an RV trip in Michigan along this stretch of coast. July and August are peak season, with average highs in the low 80s F and warm enough water (around 70 F in late summer) for real swimming. June brings lighter crowds and wildflowers, while September delivers warm days, cool nights, and dramatically cheaper rates. October is gorgeous for fall color but Lake Michigan storms pick up. Winters here are genuinely cold (average January highs around freezing) with heavy lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds close November to April. Pro tip: aim for the second week of September. Beaches are nearly empty, water is still swimmable, and you'll feel like you have the dunes to yourself.
weather.gov/grr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Lake Michigan Beach?
You'll be fine, and most first-time renters on RVezy say it was easier than they expected. Every host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and waste tanks, so you're not left guessing. The roads around Lake Michigan Beach are very RV-friendly: I-94 runs flat and straight, Red Arrow Highway hugs the coast at relaxed beach-town speeds, and there are no mountains or tight switchbacks. If you're nervous about driving at all, book a host who offers delivery and let them park it for you. Pro tip: take 15 minutes after pickup to practice turns and reversing in an empty lot before heading to your campground. Confidence builds fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Lake Michigan Beach trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-31 or a battery issue at Warren Dunes, one phone call dispatches help. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick questions about quirks like the awning latch or the water pump switch. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's exact location and any nearby mile markers before you call, especially along quieter stretches of Blue Star Highway. It helps the service truck reach you faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental from Lake Michigan Beach to Canada or Indiana?
Yes to interstate travel, and often yes to Canada with a heads-up. Crossing into Indiana for a day at Indiana Dunes National Park (about an hour away) is completely standard for Lake Michigan Beach RV rentals. For trips to Canada (Windsor, Toronto, or beyond), message the host before booking to confirm, since cross-border travel may require additional documentation. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not extend there. Popular routes from Lake Michigan Beach include the full west Michigan coast up to Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Lake Michigan Circle Tour, and Chicago weekend trips. Pro tip: bring your passport even for short Canada hops; ID rules are stricter than they used to be.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a Lake Michigan Beach RV trip?
Easier on the wallet than you'd think. Gas prices in southwest Michigan typically run close to the national average, and most travel trailers towed by an SUV get 12 to 16 MPG, while Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 MPG and Class B campervans can hit 18 to 20 MPG. For a typical weekend at Warren Dunes from Chicago (about 200 miles round trip), budget roughly $60 to $100 in fuel for a motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in Benton Harbor or St. Joseph before heading north on US-31, where small beach-town stations sometimes charge a premium. Plan your stops with the GasBuddy app to stretch your RV road trip from Lake Michigan Beach further.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lake Michigan Beach?
Book early. Really early. Michigan State Parks open reservations six months ahead at midnrreservations.com, and Warren Dunes summer weekend sites often vanish within minutes of going live at 8:00 a.m. Eastern. For July and August stays, aim for that exact six-month window. Private parks like Coloma/St. Joseph KOA and Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman generally take reservations many months out. If you're flexible, weekday camping is far easier to snag. Pro tip: services like Campnab can text you when a cancellation opens up at Warren Dunes. That's how locals snag last-minute sites when summer plans firm up.
midnrreservations.com/What's driving an RV around Lake Michigan Beach actually like?
Genuinely pleasant. The area is flat, two-lane Red Arrow Highway and Blue Star Highway wind through orchards and beach towns at 35 to 55 MPH, and I-94 gets you anywhere fast. Watch for sandy shoulders near dune areas (don't pull off the road there, you'll get stuck), and be aware that summer brings heavy beach traffic on Friday afternoons heading out of Chicago. Winter is a different story: lake-effect snow can dump several inches per hour, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: avoid driving Red Arrow Highway in downtown South Haven on summer Saturdays. Take I-196 around and rejoin closer to your destination to skip the bottleneck.
mi.gov/mdotWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lake Michigan Beach?
Most campgrounds along this stretch of Lake Michigan are well-equipped. Warren Dunes modern campground offers electric hookups, a sanitation/dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. Weko Beach Campground in Bridgman has electric sites and beach access. The Coloma/St. Joseph KOA offers full hookups including water, sewer, and Wi-Fi. Dump stations are typically free for registered guests, and most parks have a potable water fill station near the entrance. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter just in case. Older state park sites in Michigan don't always match modern RV plug configurations, and your host can confirm what's onboard before pickup.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's actually inside the RVs available near Lake Michigan Beach?
Plenty of comfort. RVs available for rent near Lake Michigan Beach typically include real beds (queen-size in most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, and microwave, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, and a furnace for chilly Lake Michigan nights. Many hosts also include a TV, generator for off-grid stays, outdoor awning, and seatbelts for safe travel with kids. Campervan rental in Lake Michigan Beach (Class B) tends to be more compact but still includes a bed, mini kitchen, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: check the Sleeps filter on RVezy and read each listing's amenities list, then message the host if Wi-Fi or a specific feature like a backup camera is a must-have for your family RV trip in Lake Michigan Beach.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Michigan%20Beach%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons can I get with my motorhome rental Lake Michigan Beach hosts offer?
Plenty of fun extras to make your motorhome rental Lake Michigan Beach experience easier. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and outdoor mats, kitchen kits, generator hours for boondocking, bikes or kayaks (perfect for paddling at Weko Beach), portable grills, and pet packages. Hosts list their available add-ons and prices right on the listing page, so there are no surprises. Pickup is typically at the host's home, with delivery available from many hosts for an extra fee. Mileage policies are clearly stated on every listing. Pro tip: ask your host about a beach-gear bundle. Many Lake Michigan owners stock umbrellas, coolers, and sand toys specifically because they know that's why you came.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Michigan%20Beach%2C%20MichiganHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. You pay for your Lake Michigan Beach RV rental directly through RVezy at booking using a credit card. The host receives funds after your trip begins, which protects both of you. A security deposit is held separately (not charged) on your card before the trip, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, usually within a few days of return. To avoid any issues, do the pre-trip walkaround video with your host, follow the mileage and generator-hour policies on the listing, and dump the tanks before return if that is required. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy app. It creates a clear record and makes the deposit release smooth and fast.
