Campgrounds near Luna Pier
Luna Pier sits on the western shore of Lake Erie in Monroe County, Michigan, minutes from the Ohio state line and roughly an hour south of Detroit. The area gives RV travelers access to Lake Erie beaches, marsh habitat, and the walleye and yellow perch fisheries the western basin is known for, while keeping I-75 close for easy in-and-out.
Campground options span state parks and private RV resorts. William C. Sterling State Park is the only Michigan state park on Lake Erie, sits a few miles from the Ohio border, and includes a modern campground, full-amenity cottages, a boating access site, and trails along about a mile of sandy shoreline. Just south, Maumee Bay State Park sits on the shores of Lake Erie a few miles east of Toledo, adding a second large public campground within short driving distance.
Private options fill in the gaps. Harbortown RV Resort and River Raisin Marina and Campground put RVers closer to the water and marina services, while Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park and Campground provides an inland alternative useful for longer stays.
Things to do near Luna Pier
Fishing drives much of the trip planning here. Sterling State Park protects more than 500 acres of Great Lakes marsh and restored lakeplain prairie habitat and is well known for its access to walleye and perch fisheries. Shoreline anglers, boat launches, and charter operations out of nearby marinas all work the western basin.
On land, expect beach time, birding, and easy trail miles. There are over seven miles of biking and hiking trails within Sterling State Park, and the River Raisin Heritage Trail connects the park via a one-mile connector to downtown Monroe, local parks, and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park. South of the border, more than 300 bird species have been observed at Maumee Bay State Park, where visitors can also use the inland lake, nature center, and accessible boardwalk and Storybook trails.

The camping calendar is split between seasonal Michigan state parks and year-round Ohio options. Sterling State Park's modern campground operates from spring through late fall, with the season typically running April into early November. Maumee Bay State Park Campground, just across the state line in Ohio, is open year-round, though facilities are limited in the off-season.
Summer is the busy stretch, when Lake Erie's shoreline and lagoons draw the biggest crowds. The lakeside is notorious for mosquitoes, so pack bug spray. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out first, and shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October are typically quieter and cooler.
Winter narrows the options. At Maumee Bay from November 1 to April 30, showerhouses close and two heated family restrooms with shower facilities remain in use. Spring through fall is best for hiking and beach time, while winter visitors will find some trails and services limited.

How to book campsites near Luna Pier
Michigan state park sites use the state's central reservation system. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors, and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Camping, lodging, and harbor reservations can be booked up to six months in advance on a rolling window, and popular sites for summer and holiday weekends can fill within minutes of opening. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to all Michigan state parks.
Ohio state parks use a separate system. Reservations at Maumee Bay are required and available six months in advance via reserveohio.com or by calling 866-644-6727.
Private parks such as Harbortown RV Resort, River Raisin Marina and Campground, and Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park and Campground are booked directly with the property, typically through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is flat, low-lying, and shaped by Lake Erie's marshes and river mouths. Expect open sightlines, breezes off the lake, and higher humidity than inland Michigan. Sites at the closest state park lean toward paved and open rather than wooded. At Sterling State Park, most sites are paved and generously sized, with the majority within view of Lake Erie and within steps of the sandy shoreline.
Hookups and services vary by park. Sterling State Park's modern campground offers electric hookups at all sites, with some full-hookup options, plus a sanitation station and modern restrooms. Maumee Bay offers a large family campground with electric and full-hookup sites, and pets are permitted on designated sites.
Bring bug spray, sun cover, and a plan for marsh mosquitoes. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-75 corridor.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV rental in Luna Pier?
Every RV rental in Luna Pier booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle, which is reassuring if you are new to towing or driving something larger than your daily car. During checkout, you choose from different coverage levels so you can pick what fits your trip and budget, rather than whatever a host happens to offer. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround with your host at pickup so any pre-existing scratches are documented before you head off to Sterling State Park or the lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's RVezy's cancellation policy if my Luna Pier trip plans change?
Plans shift, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book ahead. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every rental, so you get consistent, fair terms no matter which RV you choose. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, plus structured refund tiers based on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans are protected. You can review the full policy during checkout before you confirm, then lock in your dates with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Luna Pier?
Yes, and your pup will love the lakeshore. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Luna Pier, and you can filter directly for Pet-Friendly listings on RVezy to skip the guesswork. Sterling State Park, about 10 minutes north in Monroe, welcomes leashed dogs on its trails and at day-use areas (not on the main swim beach). Luna Pier Beach itself is small and dog-friendly outside posted swim zones, and Sandy Lou Park along the pier is another easy leashed-dog stop. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and ask about their pet policy so there are no surprises.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/sterlingCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Luna Pier?
Yes, RV delivery in Luna Pier is one of the best perks on RVezy, especially if you are a first-timer who would rather skip driving a big rig down I-75. Many local hosts will deliver to Sterling State Park, Harbortown RV Resort, or even a lakeside private property and handle the full setup, including leveling, hookups, and a walkthrough of the systems. Delivery fees usually run a few dollars per mile from the host's location, and some hosts include free delivery within a set radius. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy when searching, then message hosts with your exact campground or address to get an accurate quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Luna%20Pier%2C%20MichiganHow do mileage policies work for a Luna Pier RV trip?
Mileage is straightforward on RVezy: each host sets a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), with any extra miles billed at a per-mile rate listed on the booking. For a Luna Pier RV trip, that is usually plenty since most renters stick close to Lake Erie, Monroe, or short hops to Toledo (about 20 miles south) and Detroit (about 45 miles north). Planning a bigger loop to Mackinac or up to Traverse City? Look for listings advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage, or message hosts to discuss a higher daily cap upfront. Pro tip: review mileage details in the listing and you will find unlimited-mile options perfect for longer Pure Michigan road trips.

Many local hosts also offer delivery, meaning your only job is to show up and enjoy the lake. Pro tip: book a 3-night stay at Sterling State Park for your first trip, with hookups, level pads, and quick access to Monroe for last-minute groceries.

Luna Pier's location right off I-75 means service providers can reach most spots quickly, and Monroe has RV-capable repair shops nearby. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before pickup, you will likely never need them, but peace of mind is priceless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Luna Pier?
Luna Pier is well positioned for a Great Lakes RV road trip. Popular routes include north to Detroit and Belle Isle (about 45 miles, 1 hour), west to Ann Arbor and the Irish Hills (about 55 miles, 1 hour), south into Ohio for Cedar Point and the Lake Erie Islands (about 60 miles, 75 minutes), or the bigger loop up to Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 260 miles, 4.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by many hosts via the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or Ambassador Bridge, but message your host first to confirm insurance coverage extends across the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the Lake Huron Circle Tour starts not far north, a stunning multi-day loop.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhat should I budget for fuel on a Luna Pier RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it is easy to plan for. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs 6 to 9 MPG. Michigan gas prices vary, so check current rates before you leave: stations along I-75 in Monroe and at the Erie exit typically offer the most competitive prices near Luna Pier. For a typical 3-day trip staying within 100 miles, budget roughly $80 to $200 in fuel depending on RV size. Pro tip: compare prices in Ohio (just south on I-75), where gas is often cheaper than Michigan, an easy way to save on your campervan rental in Luna Pier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Luna Pier?
For summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book Sterling State Park about six months ahead through the Michigan DNR reservation system, the rolling window opens six months out and prime lakeside sites can go quickly. Harbortown RV Resort and Camp Lord Willing typically fill 2 to 3 months ahead for summer. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much more relaxed: 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty, and midweek you can often walk up. Pro tip: if Sterling is full, check Maumee Bay State Park (Ohio, about 30 minutes south) on the Ohio State Parks reservation system, it is often available when Michigan sites are booked solid.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Luna Pier?
Driving an RV around Luna Pier is genuinely easy, which is part of why it is such a great first-timer destination. The terrain is flat (you are at lake level), roads are wide, and I-75 runs right alongside town with low-stress on-ramps. Watch for lake fog along the shoreline in early morning (especially spring and fall) and occasional summer thunderstorms that can move across Lake Erie quickly. Winter brings ice and snow, so many rentals shift to delivery-only or pause in the coldest months. If you head north, stick to I-75 and I-94 and avoid lower-clearance routes through downtown Detroit. Pro tip: check the MDOT Mi Drive map before any longer haul to see real-time construction zones.

For dumping mid-trip, the Sterling State Park dump station is typically available to non-campers for a small fee.
