Campgrounds near Lyons, Michigan
Lyons sits in Ionia County along the Grand River in central Michigan, roughly halfway between Grand Rapids and Lansing. The village serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Grand River corridor, with campgrounds ranging from full-hookup private parks to state-managed sites within a short drive.
Located between Grand Rapids and Lansing, Ionia Recreation Area offers 4,500 acres of diverse landscape, including rolling hills, open meadows, mature forests, and wetlands. The park anchors the public camping options in the area, while private options like Alice Springs RV Park and Campground and Lakeside Resort Campground handle RV travelers looking for hookups closer to town.
For travelers willing to venture further, Snow Lake Campground and South Shore Campground add lake-oriented options within the broader region. The mix of state and private grounds means most itineraries can pair a rustic night with a full-service stopover without long transit days between sites.
Things to do near Lyons
Popular activities include camping in the modern campground and cabins, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, hiking and disc golf. At Ionia Recreation Area, Sessions Lake draws paddlers and anglers, and the beach house offers restrooms, food concessions, and kayak/canoe rentals.
Birders find strong returns in the wetlands and river corridor. Birding is excellent, with more than 199 species identified by the Audubon Society, and wildflowers abound. Cross country skiing covers 10.5 miles when snow arrives, and the park's 24-hole disc golf course adds a low-effort family option.
Off the trail system, the Grand River offers carry-down access at Riverside Picnic Area on Riverside Drive, and nearby small-town stops in Ionia and Portland handle groceries, fuel, and dump-station runs between campground stays.

The Michigan camping season concentrates between late spring and early fall. State recreation area modern sites typically open once temperatures rise and water systems are pressurized, then wind down after the leaf-color window in October. Summer weekends fill quickly, particularly at Ionia Recreation Area, where family demand runs high from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Spring can be wet and muddy, especially along the Grand River floodplain, and some rustic loops may open later than modern loops. The modern campground at Ionia Recreation Area recently reopened following infrastructure upgrades to water, sewer, and electrical systems, so travelers should confirm current-season status before arrival.
Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong hardwood color across the recreation area. Winter camping in the Lyons area is limited: state modern loops generally close, private RV parks may offer restricted service, and freeze risk to water systems is a real planning factor for RV travelers heading out from November through March.

We had a great weekend! Pickup and drop off were easy to coordinate and the unit was so light to tow with our Subaru outback. The camper came well equipped and was perfect for off-grid camping.

Too small, even for two people. There was no TV and no chairs to sit on outside. It was clean and the set up was quick and efficient.

How to book campsites near Lyons
State-managed sites in the area run through Michigan's central reservation system. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance, and summer weekends at Ionia Recreation Area routinely reserve out early.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds and state trail parking lots. The Michigan Recreation Passport does not cover local, county, municipal, or metropolitan parks or recreation areas. Michigan residents can add it during vehicle registration, while out-of-state visitors purchase a daily or annual pass at the park entrance.
Private parks such as Alice Springs RV Park and Campground and Lakeside Resort Campground book directly through their own websites or phones. County parks in the region use separate systems, so RV travelers should verify each ground's process rather than assume a single portal covers the trip.
What to expect on arrival near Lyons
Check-in at state sites follows a standard schedule. Check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m. Late arrivals should call ahead: check in your campsite reservation and occupy your campsite no later than 3 p.m. one day after your scheduled arrival date to avoid being automatically cancelled. If arrival will be later, contact the park office in advance.
Site quality varies. Modern loops at Ionia Recreation Area include electric hookups and paved or gravel pads suitable for larger RVs, while the park offers 16 rustic, hike-in campsites, accessible via an easy quarter-mile trail from the parking lot. Ten sites are nestled in the woods, five overlook Sessions Lake and one borders a tranquil creek. Each site features a fire pit, picnic table and convenient access to vault toilets along the trail. Potable water is available from a hand pump. No electricity is provided at these sites.
Bring certified firewood. Purchase only certified heat-treated firewood sold in state parks, local stores and roadside stands to avoid moving invasive pests between regions.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lyons, MI
How much does an RV rental in Lyons, MI typically cost?
RV rental in Lyons is one of the most affordable ways to explore mid-Michigan, with most rentals ranging from about $95 to $275 per night depending on the RV type. Travel trailers and pop-ups usually sit at the lower end, while Class C motorhomes and fifth wheels run higher. Lyons sits in Ionia County between Grand Rapids and Lansing, so prices stay reasonable compared to bigger metros. For a cheap RV rental in Lyons, filter by price on RVezy and look at midweek dates in May or September. Pro tip: book a Sunday through Thursday stretch near Ionia Recreation Area and you will often save versus a Friday pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lyons, Michigan?
Good news: a regular Michigan driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lyons. Michigan does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or trailers used recreationally, so Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers are all fair game. You must be at least 25 years old to book through RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto association). That is it, no extra paperwork between you and your Michigan road trip.
michigan.gov/sos/license-idIs my RV rental in Lyons, MI protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Lyons booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit M-21 or I-96 with peace of mind. You choose your protection plan level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the option that fits your comfort level, and it covers physical damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat near Ionia Recreation Area or have a mechanical hiccup heading toward Grand Rapids, one call to RVezy's roadside team gets help dispatched. That safety net is part of why first-time renters feel confident booking in Lyons.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Lyons RV trip plans change?
You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. The full cancellation terms are shown on the RVezy Help Center and during checkout before you confirm. Bottom line: it is genuinely low risk to reserve your Lyons RV now and finalize plans later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lyons, MI?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rentals in Lyons are easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet Friendly filter when browsing and you will see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Ionia Recreation Area, about 15 minutes west of Lyons, allows leashed pets in the campground and on most trails (6-foot leash required, and waste must be bagged). Bertha Brock Park is another dog-friendly favorite with shaded picnic areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, and pack a collapsible water bowl, because summer humidity in central Michigan can sneak up on pups fast.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Lyons?
Yes, RV delivery in Lyons is a popular option, and it is the easiest way to enjoy your trip without ever driving the rig yourself. Many RVezy hosts in the Lyons, Ionia, and Portland area will tow the RV directly to your campsite at Ionia Recreation Area, Bertha Brock Park, or a private property, then set up the slide-outs, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message the host with your destination to get an exact quote. For first-time renters or families with young kids, this is the stress-free way to do an Ionia County RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039410773-Delivery-optionsHow far can I travel from Lyons, MI on an RV road trip?
Lyons is a fantastic launch pad because so many great destinations are within a half-day drive. An RV road trip from Lyons can easily reach Grand Rapids (about 40 miles west), Lansing (about 35 miles east), Holland State Park on Lake Michigan (about 75 miles southwest), Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (about 175 miles northwest), and Mackinaw City at the top of the Lower Peninsula (about 230 miles north). Many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage or generous daily allowances, but it varies by listing, so check the mileage policy on the listing page. Pro tip: a 4-day loop from Lyons to Ludington State Park and back is the sweet spot for first-time Michigan RV travelers.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhere are the best campgrounds near Lyons, MI?
You have great campground choices within 30 minutes of Lyons. Ionia Recreation Area offers modern RV sites on Sessions Lake with a swimming beach, disc golf, and thousands of acres to explore. Bertha Brock Park, just west of Ionia, has shaded rustic and electric sites along Prairie Creek. Sleepy Hollow State Park near Laingsburg (about 35 minutes east) features a large lake and modern sites. For full-hookup RV camping near Lyons, the Ionia County Fairgrounds is a solid local pick. Pro tip: Ionia Recreation Area's lakeside loop fills up first on summer weekends, so book it early through the Michigan DNR reservation system.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to visit Lyons, MI in an RV?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Lyons, with the sweet spots being June and September. Summer highs in Ionia County typically run in the low 80s F with warm, humid days perfect for swimming at Sessions Lake, while nights cool into the 60s F. Early fall brings colorful foliage along the Grand River Valley and cooler 60s to low 70s F days. Spring (April to mid-May) can be muddy from snowmelt, and winter rentals are limited since most regional campgrounds close in mid to late October. Pro tip: time your trip for the Ionia Free Fair in mid-July, one of the largest free fairs in the country and a true local highlight.
weather.gov/grr/What if it is my first time renting an RV in Lyons?
Welcome to one of the best places in Michigan to try this out. First time renting an RV can feel intimidating, but every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering hookups, slide-outs, generator, propane, and tank dumping, so you leave knowing exactly how everything works. Lyons itself has quiet country roads to get comfortable on before you head out, and the drive to Ionia Recreation Area is a flat, easy 15 minutes with no mountain grades or tight switchbacks. Choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, ask for delivery if you want to skip the driving entirely, and lean on RVezy's 24/7 support if you have questions on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180893-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Lyons RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-96, a dead battery at Sessions Lake, or a lockout at a Bertha Brock Park campsite is just one phone call away from help. The roadside team can dispatch tow trucks, tire service, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance anywhere in the Lyons and greater Ionia County area. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup, it speeds up any roadside service call significantly.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Lyons RV rental into Canada or other states?
Many Lyons hosts allow interstate travel, so a swing into Indiana, Ohio, or up to Wisconsin via the U.P. is doable. Cross-border travel into Canada (Ontario via the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, about 2.5 hours east) is permitted by some hosts depending on the listing, so message the host directly from the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Bring a passport or enhanced license for any Canada crossing. Pro tip: a Lyons to Niagara Falls (Ontario side) loop is around 1,100 miles round trip and one of the great Midwest RV adventures.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lyons RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so here is a real-world breakdown. Most travel trailers towed by a pickup get 10 to 13 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes get 6 to 9 MPG. Michigan gas prices have typically run around $3.00 to $3.70 per gallon in recent years, with diesel slightly higher. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Lyons to Holland State Park and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Fill up in Ionia or Portland before heading out, where prices tend to be a bit cheaper than Grand Rapids stations. Pro tip: GasBuddy works great across Michigan for spotting the lowest pump prices on your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Lyons?
For Michigan state parks like Ionia Recreation Area and Sleepy Hollow, book through the Michigan DNR reservation system (MiDNRReservations.com) up to 6 months in advance. Summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, especially holiday weekends, often sell out the day the window opens. For Bertha Brock Park and Ionia County Fairgrounds, 1 to 2 months ahead is usually enough. Every Michigan state park entry also requires a Recreation Passport (a small annual fee for residents and a per-entry fee for non-residents). Pro tip: if a site looks sold out, check back a week before your trip, cancellations are common and reservation alerts can text you when one opens.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Lyons, MI?
Driving an RV around Lyons is genuinely beginner-friendly. The terrain is gently rolling farmland with no mountains, and the main routes (M-21, M-66, and I-96) are wide, well-maintained, and have plenty of room for big rigs. Watch for occasional deer on rural roads at dawn and dusk, especially along the Grand River corridor. Winter (December through March) can bring snow squalls and icy patches, so most RV trips happen April through October. Avoid downtown Grand Rapids in a large Class A during weekday rush hours; instead, take the I-96 bypass. Pro tip: the M-66 stretch north toward Stanton has some scenic, low-traffic stretches that are perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lyons?
Most developed campgrounds within 30 minutes of Lyons offer 30 and 50 amp electric, potable water fill stations, and a sanitary dump station. Ionia Recreation Area has modern restrooms with hot showers, a beach on Sessions Lake, a disc golf course, and a playground. Bertha Brock Park has electric sites, picnic shelters, and hiking trails. Most Michigan state parks do not offer sewer hookups at individual sites, but the dump station is included with your reservation. Cell service is generally solid (Verizon and AT&T both work well) but campground Wi-Fi is rare. Pro tip: Michigan rule, only buy certified heat-treated firewood at the campground or locally to prevent invasive pests, do not bring wood from home.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regulationsWhat is included inside a typical motorhome rental in Lyons?

Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 7, Class B campervans sleep 2 to 3, and travel trailers and fifth wheels often sleep 6 to 10. Many hosts include sheets, towels, basic cookware, and a generator. TVs and Wi-Fi vary, so check the listing's amenities section. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count on RVezy to match the right rig to your family RV trip Lyons crew.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with a Lyons RV rental?
Hosts in the Lyons area offer some of the most useful add-ons around. Common extras include camping chairs and tables, propane fire pits, bike racks, generators, kayak or paddleboard rentals, linen and kitchen kits, and even pre-stocked groceries. Delivery and setup at Ionia Recreation Area or Bertha Brock Park is typically priced per mile from the host's location and shown in the listing. Mileage policies vary, some hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee after, while others offer unlimited mileage for in-state trips. Standard pickup is usually between 1 and 3 p.m. with return by 11 a.m. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit and your only job is to show up and relax.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Lyons?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Lyons through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the RV) is held on your card a few days before the trip starts and released after a clean return. To avoid any deposit hiccups: do a thorough walkaround video at pickup with the host, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, dump the tanks if the listing requires it, and clean up after pets. Pro tip: message the host the day before pickup to confirm tank dumping and cleaning expectations, it makes return day a breeze.
