Campgrounds near Marion, Michigan
Marion is a small village in Osceola County in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, roughly halfway between Cadillac and Clare. The area sits in a rural corner of northern Michigan defined by the Middle Branch of the Muskegon River, mixed hardwood forest, and dozens of small inland lakes. Most RV travelers use Marion as a quiet base for canoeing, tubing, and fishing on the local rivers, with Cadillac and the Manistee National Forest less than an hour away.
Campground options within a short drive range from private riverside resorts to municipal parks. Old Log Resort and Campground and Duggan's Canoe Livery and Campground, Inc. sit close to the water and cater to paddlers, while River Country Campground and Cadillac Woods Campground offer more traditional RV sites with hookups. Riverside Park Campground provides a simpler, in-town option.
Expect two-lane state highways, limited cell coverage in wooded areas, and grocery runs into Marion, McBain, or Cadillac.
Things to do near Marion
The Middle Branch and Muskegon rivers are the main draw. Duggan's Canoe Livery and Campground, Inc. runs canoe, kayak, and tube trips directly from its site, and River Country Campground offers similar water access on the Muskegon. Trout, bass, and panfish are common in the surrounding lakes and streams.
For land activities, the White Pine Trail State Park runs north-south through Osceola County and is open to biking and hiking. William Mitchell State Park near Cadillac adds a swimming beach, boat launches on Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell, and interpretive trails. The surrounding state forest lands are open to hunting in season and to off-road vehicle use on designated routes.
Families staying at Cadillac Woods Campground or Old Log Resort and Campground typically mix a paddling day with a trip into Cadillac for groceries, mini-golf, or the lake beaches.

The camping season in this part of Michigan is short and clearly defined. Osceola County parks typically open in early May and close in late September, which is a good proxy for when most private campgrounds around Marion are fully open. Some private resorts open earlier in April and close in mid-October, weather permitting.
July and August are peak season. River outfitters run at capacity, weekends fill first, and holiday weeks around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day sell out earliest. Late May and early June bring cooler nights, higher water levels, and blackfly activity in wooded sites. September offers the best balance for RV travelers: mild days, cold nights, thinner crowds, and the start of color change in the hardwoods.
Winter camping options are limited. Most private campgrounds and county parks close by late September or October, and unplowed access roads make off-season stays impractical for most RV setups.
How to book a campsite near Marion
Private campgrounds around Marion, including Old Log Resort and Campground, Duggan's Canoe Livery and Campground, Inc., River Country Campground, Cadillac Woods Campground, and Riverside Park Campground, are booked directly with each operator by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and holiday weeks fill first, so booking two to three months out is standard for peak dates.
Osceola County parks use the Campspot platform and accept reservations up to six months in advance. Michigan state parks such as William Mitchell near Cadillac are booked through MiDNRReservations.com, with campsites, lodging, and harbors reservable up to six months in advance and shelters up to twelve months in advance. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks and state forest campgrounds.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the Marion area lean rustic to mid-service. Full hookups (water, electric, sewer) are common at larger private parks like Cadillac Woods Campground and River Country Campground, while smaller riverside operations may offer electric-only or non-electric sites. Confirm amp service, sewer, and pull-through availability when booking a larger RV.
Cell coverage is spotty in wooded and low-lying river areas. Bring a paper map or download offline directions. Mosquitoes and blackflies are active from late May through July, especially at dusk near water. Bears are present in the surrounding forests but rarely a problem at maintained campgrounds; food should still be stored securely.
Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Marion, McBain, and Cadillac. The nearest full-service hospital and RV repair options are in Cadillac.

michigan.org/article/trip-idea/scenic-drives-michiganHow much should I budget for fuel on my Marion RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on a Marion RV trip, so it's smart to plan ahead. Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class A and Class C motorhomes, 12 to 18 MPG for campervans, and your tow vehicle's MPG minus 30-40% for travel trailers. For a 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $110 to $140 in fuel. Private RV parks near Cadillac typically book 2 to 3 months out for peak season. Weekday and shoulder-season trips often have same-week availability. Pro tip: the best campgrounds near Marion fill fastest for the Fourth of July and fall color weekends in early October, set a calendar reminder for 6 months before your target date and book the moment the window opens.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Marion?
Driving an RV around Marion is refreshingly mellow compared to bigger Michigan cities. The main routes (M-66, M-61, and US-131 about 15 miles west) are wide two-lane highways with low traffic, gentle terrain, and well-maintained shoulders, making them ideal for first-time RVers. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk (Osceola County has one of the highest deer densities in the state) and be alert for logging trucks on forest roads. Winter brings lake-effect snow and icy patches from November through March. Pro tip: avoid narrow seasonal forest roads in the Manistee National Forest with anything larger than a Class C, stick to numbered county roads and you'll have smooth sailing.
