Camping near Mattawan, Michigan
Mattawan is a village in Van Buren County in southwest Michigan, just west of Kalamazoo along the I-94 corridor. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of inland lakes, the Kal-Haven Trail, and the Lake Michigan shoreline near South Haven, making it a practical base for a mix of water, trail, and small-town day trips.
Campground options in the area lean toward privately operated RV parks and resorts rather than large public campgrounds. Hemlock Lake Campground, Inc, Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort, Leisure Valley RV Resort and Campground, Cranberry Lake Campgrounds, and Spirit Springs Campground all sit within a manageable radius of the village and cater to travelers with trailers and motorhomes.
Public land is close as well. Van Buren State Park is a 400-acre public recreation area on Lake Michigan four miles south of South Haven, with high dune formations, a modern campground, and a mile of sandy beach. Fort Custer Recreation Area, near Augusta, is roughly 30 miles east and offers campsites, hiking trails, and mountain biking.
Things to do around Mattawan
Trail users have easy access to the regional rail-trail network. The Kal-Haven Trail State Park runs 33.5 miles between Kalamazoo and South Haven on a crushed limestone surface, passing through farmland, wooded areas, and small towns along the way. Cyclists staying at Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort or Hemlock Lake Campground, Inc are within reach of trailheads at either end.
Families often pair camping with in-town attractions. The Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum in Portage, about 15 miles from Mattawan, features interactive exhibits and historic aircraft displays. The Kalamazoo Nature Center offers hiking trails and educational programs.
Water is a draw in every direction. Inland lakes host fishing and paddling, and Lake Michigan beaches at South Haven and Covert sit about a 40-minute drive west for a full day at the shore.

Southwest Michigan runs on a short, busy warm-weather camping calendar. Most private RV parks in the area operate from April through October, with peak demand from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. July draws the heaviest bookings thanks to warm lake temperatures and long daylight hours.
Spring is unpredictable. Nights can still drop below freezing into April, and rainfall picks up through May, which is the wettest month for the Kalamazoo area. That means mud on unpaved sites but also wildflowers along the trails. September and early October are strong shoulder-season windows, with cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color moving through the hardwood forests around inland lakes.
Winter camping options are limited. Many private RV parks close or reduce services after October, and Lake Michigan lakeshore parks see snow, wind, and closed loops. Travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm hookups, water availability, and dump-station status directly with each campground before arriving.

How to book campgrounds near Mattawan
For private campgrounds in the Mattawan area, including Hemlock Lake Campground, Inc, Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort, Leisure Valley RV Resort and Campground, Cranberry Lake Campgrounds, and Spirit Springs Campground, book directly through each property. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill first, so reserving several months out is standard for July and August dates.
For Michigan state parks such as Van Buren State Park and Fort Custer Recreation Area, reservations go through the Michigan DNR reservation system. Campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance on a rolling window, with the system opening at 8 a.m. Eastern for the corresponding date. Popular sites can book within minutes. State forest campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to state parks, recreation areas, and state forest campgrounds.
What to expect
The land around Mattawan is rolling farmland mixed with hardwood forest, small kettle lakes, and blueberry country closer to the lakeshore. Sites at nearby private resorts tend to be grassy or gravel, with full or partial hookups and family-focused amenities such as pools, playgrounds, and stocked fishing lakes. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable near the I-94 corridor.
Insects are part of the experience. Mosquitoes are heaviest near wetlands in June, and ticks are active from spring through fall in wooded areas. Pack repellent and check for ticks after hikes.
RV access is straightforward. The village sits just off I-94, and fuel, groceries, propane, and RV supplies are available in Kalamazoo and Paw Paw, both within a short drive.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mattawan,MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Mattawan?

To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and identity verification is completed in the app so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most renters are surprised how quickly the host walkthrough turns into keys in hand and a clear route toward Lake Michigan.

Yes, and this is one of the biggest reasons renters feel confident booking. Every RV rental in Mattawan, MI booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan with insurance coverage plus 24/7 roadside assistance. At checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, so you control coverage rather than the host. The protection plan offers real financial peace of mind, so you can focus on the trip instead of the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Mattawan RV rental?
You're in good hands: RVezy sets a clear, renter-friendly cancellation policy on every booking (hosts don't define this), including a grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. If plans change due to a work conflict, family event, or severe Michigan weather, your refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is. The RVezy Help Center walks through every cancellation window in detail. Tip: book early to secure the best Mattawan RV trip dates around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and South Haven summer fireworks, knowing you have a clear policy if plans shift.

Absolutely, and Southwest Michigan is a great region for dog owners. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Mattawan options, which you can find by selecting the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you're rolling, Van Buren State Park welcomes leashed dogs along its Lake Michigan beach areas, Fort Custer Recreation Area has miles of forested dog-friendly trails about 25 minutes northeast, and Al Sabo Land Preserve in nearby Texas Township is a local favorite for hiking with your pup. Tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about dog-friendly interiors, dog beds, or tie-out hooks. Many Mattawan hosts are dog owners themselves.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/van-burenCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Mattawan?
Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to start your trip. Many hosts offer RV delivery Mattawan service straight to local campgrounds like Fort Custer Recreation Area, Van Buren State Park, or the Coloma/St. Joseph KOA, and they'll level the rig, set up the awning, connect water and electric hookups, and walk you through every system before leaving. Delivery fees generally depend on distance, so a drop-off in Mattawan or Paw Paw is more affordable than a haul to South Haven on the lakeshore. To request delivery, message the host with your campground name and site number. For first-time renters, this is the simplest way to skip the learning curve.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parksHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Mattawan?
Plenty far, even on a long weekend. From Mattawan you're about 40 miles to South Haven's Lake Michigan beaches, 95 miles to Grand Rapids, 145 miles to Chicago, 175 miles to Traverse City wine country, and roughly 230 miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, an iconic RV road trip from Mattawan. Each host sets their own mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per night), and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer trips. Tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're chasing dunes and lighthouses, and message the host about an additional-miles package if you want a buffer.

September is a local favorite: daytime temps around 70 degrees, smaller campground crowds, harvest season along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, and vibrant fall color along the Kal-Haven Trail by early to mid October. Winters in Mattawan are cold (often in the 20s with lake-effect snow), and most campgrounds close from late October until late April. Tip: book a shoulder-season trip and you'll often find better RV rates and prime sites at Van Buren State Park.
weather.gov/grr/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting one in Mattawan beginner-friendly?
Yes, and Mattawan is one of the easiest places to start. First time renting an RV? Pick a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Mattawan style and you'll handle it more like a tall van than a big rig. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, the dump valves, slide-outs, and driving tips. The roads around Mattawan (M-43, M-40, and I-94) are flat, straight, and well-marked, so confidence builds quickly. Tip: do a short practice loop through Paw Paw or around Maple Lake before heading toward the lakeshore. By day two, you'll feel comfortable pulling into your campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/united-states/michiganWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Mattawan booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in your protection plan, so a flat tire on US-131, a dead battery at Fort Custer, or a propane issue at Van Buren State Park is one phone call away from help. Your host is also a direct lifeline (most respond within minutes by message) for quick questions like switching from shore power to battery or relighting the water heater. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too. Translation: relax, drive, and enjoy the lakeshore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mattawan RV rental to Canada or other states?
Often yes, with one quick step. Many Mattawan hosts allow trips into neighboring states like Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and some approve crossing into Canada (Windsor and Niagara are just over the border) with insurance extending when the host approves the route. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. The key step: message the host before booking, share your route, and get cross-border approval in writing through RVezy chat. Popular routes from Mattawan include Chicago lakeshore (145 miles), Indiana Dunes National Park (about 95 miles), and Niagara Falls, Ontario (about 360 miles). Bring your passport or enhanced driver's license for any Canadian crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Mattawan?
Easier than you'd think. Class C motorhomes around Mattawan typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, campervans 15 to 20 mpg, and a travel trailer setup pulls 10 to 14 mpg depending on your tow vehicle. Michigan gas prices generally track close to the national average, with stations in Paw Paw and along I-94 often a few cents cheaper than central Kalamazoo. For a 250-mile round trip toward Sleeping Bear Dunes in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Tip: use the GasBuddy app and top off in Mattawan before jumping on the highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mattawan?
For peak summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book as early as possible. Michigan state parks like Van Buren and Fort Custer open reservations 6 months ahead through MiDNRReservations.com, and popular Lake Michigan sites often fill within hours of release for July and August weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or early October, you can usually grab spots 2 to 4 weeks out, sometimes even last-minute. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Lawton and the Coloma/St. Joseph KOA take reservations year-round and often have more flexibility. Tip: a Michigan Recreation Passport (around $14 for residents and $19 for nonresidents at the gate) covers vehicle entry for the calendar year.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Mattawan?
Mattawan is one of the easier places in Michigan to drive an RV. I-94 runs right through town with wide lanes and gentle grades, M-43 and Red Arrow Highway are flat, scenic two-laners that work well for the lakeshore, and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Watch for two local conditions: deer crossings at dawn and dusk on rural roads, and lake-effect snow squalls between November and March that can drop visibility quickly near South Haven. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can also build off Lake Michigan. Tip: try to avoid I-94 westbound on Friday afternoons in July when weekend traffic from Chicago picks up.

Expect 30-amp or 50-amp electric and potable water at parks like Fort Custer Recreation Area and Van Buren State Park, full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at private parks like the Coloma/St. Joseph KOA and Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Lawton, and on-site dump stations at nearly every state campground. Showers and flush toilets are standard, and laundry is common at private parks. Tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving Mattawan and confirm with the host that the RV includes a 30-to-50-amp adapter, so you're plug-and-play at any site.

Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays. WiFi isn't always built in, so plan to use your phone hotspot or pick up a signal at the campground. Tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm linens, kitchenware, and a starter propane fill are included.

You have lots of choice. Popular add-ons on Mattawan listings include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor camping gear (chairs, table, grill), bike racks, generator hours, and propane fills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around Mattawan, Paw Paw, or Kalamazoo, with delivery available for an extra fee. Mileage policies vary: most hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, some offer unlimited mileage, and additional miles typically run $0.25 to $0.45 each. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mattawan,MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. Payment for your Mattawan RV rental is handled entirely through the RVezy platform with all major credit and debit cards, so you never hand cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip and released after the RV is returned in the same condition you received it. Avoid surprises by doing a thorough walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, refilling propane if required, returning with the same fuel level, and emptying the holding tanks at a dump station. Tip: keep an eye on mileage and generator hours so any overage charges line up cleanly with the listing terms.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Mattawan in the winter?
Yes, and a winter RV trip in Michigan can be its own kind of magic. Some Mattawan hosts keep their rigs available year-round, especially four-season campervans and motorhomes with heated holding tanks, dual-pane windows, and a strong furnace. Plan to stay at a winter-open campground with shore power (select private parks in the region stay open seasonally) and use proper tires for lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan. Use the RV as a cozy base for Timber Ridge ski area near Gobles, ice fishing on Maple Lake in Paw Paw, or visiting snowy lighthouses in South Haven. Tip: message the host to confirm winterization status and ask for cold-weather operating tips.
