Campgrounds and RV parks near McBain, MI

Lakes drive most trips. Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell are popular with anglers for perch, walleye, northern pike, panfish, and bass, and the Clam Lake Canal that connects them is popular for shore fishing. Missaukee Lake Park has more than 1,000 feet of sandy beach, a swim area, boat ramp, and rentable boat slips on Lake Missaukee. On land, families can ride the paved Fred Meijer White Pine Trail, which follows the Lake Cadillac shoreline. The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center inside Mitchell State Park runs interpretive displays, archery and pellet ranges, and scheduled programs through summer. Lake City hosts the Fourth of July celebration billed as the Greatest Fourth in the North, drawing crowds each summer. Nearby ORV and forest trails serve riders and hikers.

The camping season around McBain and Cadillac generally runs from late April through mid-October. Most private campgrounds close for winter and reopen in mid-April to early May, while William Mitchell State Park and some state forest campgrounds stay accessible on a limited basis year-round. July and August are peak. State park sites at Mitchell and county sites on Lake Missaukee book fastest for weekends, holiday weeks, and the Lake City Fourth of July. September brings cooler nights, easier availability, and fall color through the hardwoods. Once fall arrives, reservations tend to lighten up and walk-in stays become more realistic at private parks. Winter shuts down most private parks. A handful of operators keep a small number of seasonal or monthly RV sites open through winter, but services are limited. Snow cover typically lingers from December into March, and RV travelers should plan for winterized rigs and reduced amenities during those months.

Site types vary widely. Missaukee County Campgrounds offer a mix of full-hookup and electric-only sites, rustic cabins, modern restrooms with showers, and a sanitation station on Lake Missaukee. William Mitchell State Park runs modern electric sites with showers and dump stations. Private parks near Cadillac lean toward full hookups, pull-throughs, and cabin rentals. Family parks in the area tend to run pools, playgrounds, free Wi-Fi, and organized weekend activities on grassy or gravel sites in a country setting. Amenities vary by operator, so confirm hookup amperage and rig-length limits before booking. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies in June and early July, sandy soils that drain fast after rain, and cell coverage that thins out on back roads. Bring leveling blocks: many sites are grass or gravel rather than paved pads.
