Camping near Mendon, Michigan
Mendon is a small village in St. Joseph County in southwest Michigan, set on the banks of the St. Joseph River. The river shapes the area's camping options: several parks sit directly on the water, and paddling is one of the main draws for RV travelers passing through.
Most nearby campgrounds are family-run properties on farmland or riverfront acreage rather than large corporate parks. En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery, located in nearby Leonidas on the St. Joseph River, offers primitive tent sites through full-hookup RV camping, plus a bathhouse, boat launch, and on-site canoe, kayak, and tube rentals. Hidden Pond Campground and Green Valley Campground round out the closest options, and the St. Joseph County Grange Fair in Centreville operates a large fairground campground with hundreds of water-and-electric sites.
Mendon itself is compact and rural. Expect two-lane roads, farm country, and short drives between campgrounds, river access points, and small-town amenities in Centreville, Three Rivers, and Sturgis.
Things to do near Mendon
Paddling the St. Joseph River is the signature activity. En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery runs canoe, kayak, and tube trips with shuttle service, offering multiple route lengths from short family outings to full-day trips between Sturgeon Lake in Colon and the covered bridge near Centreville. Swimming, fishing, and riverside picnicking are available on-site for campground guests.
On land, the area is set up for slow-paced family visits. The village hosts the Mendon Riverfest each August at Reed Riverside Park, capped by a fireworks display over the river. September brings the St. Joseph County Grange Fair in Centreville, a long-running agricultural fair with livestock shows, harness racing, a midway, and on-site camping. Flat county roads make for easy cycling and driving loops between the small towns and lakes of St. Joseph County.

The Mendon camping season is short and clearly defined. Most private riverfront campgrounds, including En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery, operate roughly from late spring through early fall. Outside that window, many sites, canoe liveries, and bathhouses are closed for the season.
June through August is peak. Warm days in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit support paddling and swimming on the St. Joseph River, and weekends around the Fourth of July and the Mendon Riverfest in mid-August fill weeks in advance. Book early for those dates.
September is the shoulder month worth planning around. Nights cool quickly, crowds thin, and the St. Joseph County Grange Fair in Centreville draws large camping crowds to the fairgrounds during the second half of the month. Winter is cold with regular snowfall and freezing lows, and the private campgrounds in the area do not operate for standard RV stays during this period.

We had a great rental experience with Jared & this RV. Trailer was clean & well equipped. We had no issues at all on our trip, but I was confident I was going to be able to get a hold of our host if we had any questions or concerns. Would definitely trust to rent from him again!

Excellent camper! Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Jared dropped off and set up the camper for us so it was ready when we got there, great communication throughout the rental. We had issues with the generator and Jared came out to help figure out the issue and try to get it started again. When he wasn't able to fix it he ran out and got a new generator so we wouldn't be stranded all weekend without one. Definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking for a stress free camping experience :-)

Met our expectations and more. Just needed additional sleeping space at our lake property and this Airstream was just perfect. I highly recommend using Christoph for your next at home or on the road RV adventure.

How to book campgrounds near Mendon
Campgrounds in the Mendon area are mostly independent, so reservations run through each property directly rather than a single agency system. En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery, Hidden Pond Campground, and Green Valley Campground each take bookings by phone or through their own websites, and some listings are also aggregated on third-party RV booking platforms.
The St. Joseph County Grange Fair is a special case. Fairground camping requires a paid permit reserved in advance through the fair office, and the fair itself runs one week in September. Fair-week sites sell out early and come with strict rules, including no open campfires.
For summer weekends, holidays, and the Riverfest weekend in August, reserve as early as possible. Sites at the small riverfront properties are limited and turn over quickly.
What to expect
Expect a rural, low-key camping experience rather than a resort atmosphere. Access roads range from paved to gravel, sites are typically grassy and level, and the loudest sounds are usually the river and the neighboring farms. Cell service is generally usable but can be inconsistent inside wooded loops.
Hookups vary by property. En Gedi offers a handful of full-hookup sites with sewer, while remaining sites provide 30-amp electric and water hookups, and a centrally located dump station serves campers without sewer access. The St. Joseph County Fairgrounds offers over 800 camping sites with electric and water hookups.
En Gedi is a quiet, family-friendly, alcohol-free facility, with canoe, kayak, and tube rentals and shuttle service available on-site. Confirm rules on pets, quiet hours, and RV length limits with each campground before booking.
