The main camping window runs from spring through late fall. Lake Hudson Recreation Area is open for the season April 1 through November 30, with reservations at MiDNRReservations.com and a Michigan Recreation Passport required for vehicle entry. Ohio's Harrison Lake State Park operates year-round, with a reduced off-peak season from November 1 to April 1 when only electric sites 61 through 83 remain open with latrines and water.
Late June through mid-August is peak season. Weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day book earliest, and lakefront sites at Lake Hudson move fastest. Both Michigan and Ohio state parks open reservations six months in advance of the arrival date, so prime summer weekends should be booked as soon as the window opens.
May and September are quieter, cooler, and better for stargazing under the dark sky preserve. Winter closes most private and state park loops in the area, though day-use access to Lake Hudson's dark sky preserve remains open year-round.

How to book a campsite near Morenci
Reservation systems vary by campground. Michigan state park sites, including Lake Hudson, are booked at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757, up to six months before the arrival date. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Ohio state parks, including South Area 2/3 - Harrison Lake State Park, use ReserveOhio.com or 866-644-6727, also with a six-month advance window.
Private operators such as Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Green Valley and Sunny's Campgrounds take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and both lean heavily seasonal, so calling ahead for a first-time short stay is worthwhile. Sauder Village Campground books through the village's official site.
Have rig length, slide-out, and hookup needs ready before booking, since Lake Hudson offers electric-only sites without showers or a dump station, while Harrison Lake offers full hookups, showers, and a dump station.
What to expect
Sites in this area skew rustic to semimodern on the Michigan side and more developed on the Ohio side. Lake Hudson's semimodern campground offers roughly 50 sites arranged in two loops among thick trees, with electric hookups, vault toilets, and hand-pump potable water, but no showers or dump station on-site. Plan to arrive with a full fresh-water tank and a plan for dumping en route.
Harrison Lake, by contrast, has 165 sites with a mix of full hookup, electric, and non-electric, plus showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. Cell coverage can be spotty in parts of the area. Private resorts add pools, ponds, and stronger connectivity but tend toward tighter, seasonal-neighbor layouts.
Expect wooded, shaded sites, mosquitoes near dusk in summer, and quiet nights, especially inside the dark sky preserve where outdoor lighting is intentionally minimal.
