Campgrounds and RV parks near Morrice, MI

Water activities dominate the area. Lake Ovid at Sleepy Hollow State Park is a no-wake lake open to paddling, fishing, and small trailered boats, with a designated swim beach, boat launch, and kayak launch. The Shiawassee River, adjacent to Walnut Hills Family Campground, supports canoe, kayak, and tube floats, and the campground runs an on-site livery. On land, Sleepy Hollow has about 16 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails through prairie, hardwood forest, and pine plantations, plus designated equestrian trails and a disc golf course. Family-oriented private parks add beaches, inflatable water attractions, playgrounds, and courts for volleyball, basketball, and gaga ball. Lansing, East Lansing, and downtown Howell are all within reasonable driving distance for restaurants, groceries, and rainy-day attractions.

Private campgrounds in this part of Michigan generally follow a spring through fall season. Walnut Hills Family Campground opens in early May and closes in early October, and Taylor's Beach Campground typically operates from April through October. Winter RV camping options in the immediate area are limited outside the state park. Sleepy Hollow State Park stays open year-round for day use, with 181 modern electric campsites and two cabins available through the main season, along with winter activities such as cross-country skiing on groomed trails when snow cover permits. Water is typically shut off in the campground outside the main season, so RV renters should plan on filling tanks before arrival in shoulder months. Summer weekends, especially around holidays, book out well in advance at both private parks and the state park. Spring can be wet, and low-lying sites at Walnut Hills have flooded after heavy rain, so campers should ask about site elevation when booking early-season stays.

Expect a mix of open, grassy private parks and a wooded state park setting. Sleepy Hollow's campground has two loops with modern restrooms and showers, asphalt or concrete pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and electric hookups; water is available at the fill-and-dump station at the loop entrance rather than at individual sites, and some sites offer 50-amp service. Pads accommodate trailers and RVs up to 45 feet, though a number of sites are shorter. Private parks such as Walnut Hills and Taylor's Beach lean family-heavy, with a higher share of seasonal campers, active weekend programming, and amenities like beaches, splash features, and game rooms. Cell coverage in the state park can be faint on major carriers. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving invasive pests.
