Muskegon Heights camping overview
Muskegon Heights sits just inland from Lake Michigan in west Michigan, minutes from a cluster of shoreline parks, dune country, and inland lake campgrounds. The area works well as an RV base for beach days on Lake Michigan, paddling on Muskegon Lake, and short drives to Grand Haven or Grand Rapids.
The closest camping option is PJ Hoffmaster State Park, a state park just south of the city with a wooded modern campground and 3 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, towering dunes, 10 miles of scenic trails and the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center. To the north, the South Channel - Muskegon State Park unit adds shoreline and channel access between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. Inland alternatives include Lake Sch-Nepp-A-Ho Campground and two private RV parks well suited to bigger rigs, Muskegon KOA and Duck Creek RV Resort.
Between state and private grounds, RV travelers can choose shaded state park loops with electric-only hookups or private resorts offering full hookups, pools, and family programming.
Things to do near Muskegon Heights
The main draw is Lake Michigan itself: swimming beaches, sunsets, and the dune landscape at PJ Hoffmaster State Park, where a long stairway climbs to a panoramic dune overlook above the lake. The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center at the park explains how the dunes formed and runs seasonal naturalist programs.
Muskegon Lake and the Muskegon River add paddling, fishing, and boat launches. In town, families can tour the USS Silversides Submarine Museum, ride the summer track at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park, and use downtown Muskegon for groceries and restaurants.
Hiking is strong across the state parks, with 10 miles of scenic trails at Hoffmaster, plus twelve miles of marked and groomed hiking trails at Muskegon State Park, some lit for cross-country skiing in winter.

The peak RV season runs from late May through Labor Day, with warm lake temperatures, long daylight, and full campground programming. Weekends at Hoffmaster and Muskegon State Park book out well in advance for summer, and holiday weekends are the tightest dates of the year. Weekdays and shoulder-season stays are easier to secure.
Spring is cool and often wet, with Lake Michigan still cold into May. It works for hiking, birding, and quieter campgrounds, but expect variable weather and lingering closures on some loops. Fall brings crisp air, hardwood color, and lighter crowds through October; November turns cold and windy off the lake.
Winter is snowy and cloudy, with lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan common. Most seasonal campground loops close, though the modern campground at Muskegon State Park stays open year-round for camping, and state park trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our camper immensely. The owner was very helpful and accommodating. Thank you
Brenda S. - Jul 2026
The camper is well taken care of, has everything you would need for a camping trip, and the host was really easy to communicate with and make time arrangements. We had it delivered and everything was very smooth and easy. We have two small boys who shared the oversized bottom bunk. This is a great RV for families, not too tight of quarters but still a very manageable towing size. I would definitely recommend this RV.

Wonderful experience with Eric and his RV. Clean, comfortable and Eric went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. We will absolutely rent from him again in the future!

How to book campgrounds near Muskegon Heights
State park sites at PJ Hoffmaster State Park and South Channel - Muskegon State Park are reserved through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com or by phone at 1-800-447-2757. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance, and popular summer weekends are often claimed within minutes of the window opening.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds. It can be added when registering a Michigan vehicle or purchased at the park entrance.
Private parks in the area, including Muskegon KOA, Duck Creek RV Resort, and Lake Sch-Nepp-A-Ho Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, often with longer booking windows and full-hookup RV sites.
What to expect at campgrounds near Muskegon Heights
State park campgrounds in this area are modern but not full-hookup. Hoffmaster's campground is split into two loops totaling 293 sites; all but four sites have electrical hookups, and most have 50 amp service, with no water or sewer hookups at sites but a dump station with drinking water near the entrance. Sites are wooded and shaded, and many sit close together, so privacy is limited.
Alcohol is not allowed at Hoffmaster from May 15 until September 15, and rangers actively enforce quiet hours. Mosquitoes can be heavy in the wooded sections during early summer.
The South Channel - Muskegon State Park loop offers electrical hookups, paved campsites, fire pit rings, modern bathhouses, and a dump station, but no water hookups at individual sites. Private parks like Muskegon KOA and Duck Creek RV Resort typically add full hookups, pools, playgrounds, and cabin rentals for larger rigs and families.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Muskegon Heights, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Muskegon Heights, MI?
An RV rental in Muskegon Heights is one of the most affordable ways to explore Michigan's lakeshore. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and Class A coaches sit at $250 and up. Pricing peaks from late June through Labor Day when Lake Michigan beaches and Michigan's Adventure are busiest. For a cheap RV rental in Muskegon Heights, target shoulder weeks in May, early June, or September, when nightly rates often drop 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and weekly discounts on RVezy to lock in the best value, especially if you can travel Sunday through Thursday.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Muskegon%20Heights%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Muskegon Heights?
A standard, unrestricted driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Muskegon Heights. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 lbs, which covers nearly every RV listed on RVezy, including Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most Class A rigs. To qualify as an approved RVezy driver, you must be at least 25 years old with a full, unrestricted license valid for your entire trip; RVezy verifies your ID through the platform so there's no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home country license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you arrive and you're set to cruise US-31 up the Lake Michigan coast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Muskegon Heights protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Muskegon Heights includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose the protection level that fits your trip during checkout (it's your decision, not the host's), and it covers most physical damage to the RV during your rental. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides significant financial protection against accidents, blowouts, and accidental interior damage. Combined with around-the-clock roadside help for things like flat tires, dead batteries, or lockouts on M-46 or US-31, it's the kind of safety net that makes a Muskegon Heights RV trip feel relaxed instead of risky.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Muskegon Heights RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so your plans aren't left in limbo, which is reassuring when you're planning around Lake Michigan's unpredictable spring storms. You won't see a cancellation policy on individual listings because it's handled platform-wide. Pro tip: if your plans are still loose, book early to capture the best Muskegon-area inventory, then adjust within the grace window if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Muskegon Heights?
Absolutely. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Muskegon Heights welcome your pup. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who allow dogs (some allow cats too); a small cleaning fee may apply and is clearly shown on the listing before you book. Muskegon is a fantastic dog town: Kruse Park has a dedicated off-leash dog beach on Lake Michigan just minutes from Muskegon Heights, and the Lakeshore Trail offers leashed walks with stunning water views. Michigan state park campgrounds, including Muskegon State Park and P.J. Hoffmaster, allow pets on a six-foot leash, so your whole family travels together.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Muskegon Heights?
Yes, RV delivery in Muskegon Heights is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're a first-time renter or don't want to tow. Many local hosts will drive the RV right to your site at Muskegon State Park, P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, Muskegon KOA, or a private driveway in Norton Shores or North Muskegon. They'll level the rig, connect water, sewer, and electric hookups where available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and how far they'll travel; delivery fees vary by host and distance. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Muskegon Heights stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Muskegon%20Heights%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive on a Muskegon Heights RV trip?
Plenty far. Many hosts on RVezy offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages so you can roam freely. From Muskegon Heights you're perfectly positioned: Grand Rapids is just 40 miles east (about 45 minutes), Holland and the Tulip Time festival are 35 miles south, Ludington State Park and the iconic Big Sable Lighthouse are 60 miles north, Silver Lake Sand Dunes are 35 miles up the coast, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 175 miles north along scenic US-31. Each listing shows the included daily mileage and per-mile overage rate. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Lake Michigan loop, message the host before booking to ask about an unlimited-mileage upgrade.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Muskegon%20Heights%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Muskegon Heights?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Muskegon Heights all sit within a 30-minute drive. Muskegon State Park offers two modern campgrounds (Lake Michigan Campground with about 106 sites open year-round, and Channel Campground with 139 sites open April through October) with 30/50-amp electric service, dune-side beaches, and a sanitation station. P.J. Hoffmaster State Park (about 12 miles south) features wooded sites and the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center. Muskegon KOA Holiday in Cedar Creek has full hookups and family amenities, Pioneer County Park sits right on Lake Michigan with sandy beach access, and Duck Creek RV Resort in Whitehall offers resort-style sites just 20 minutes north. Pro tip: state park sites are bookable up to 6 months in advance through midnrreservations.com, and summer weekends fill fast.
michigan.gov/recsearch/parks/muskegonWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Muskegon Heights?
Late June through early September is peak season, with average highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, warm Lake Michigan swimming, and every campground and beach in full swing. The smart-money window is mid-May to mid-June and September to early October, when daytime temps sit in the comfortable 60s to mid-70s, bugs ease up, rates drop, and you can often find Muskegon State Park sites without booking far ahead. Fall is spectacular in West Michigan, with brilliant maple and oak color along the Lakeshore Trail and US-31. Winter RV camping is also available year-round at Muskegon State Park's Lake Michigan Campground if you want to pair shore power with a luge run at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park.
weather.gov/grr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, and Muskegon Heights is genuinely one of the easiest places in Michigan for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, and they stay reachable by text throughout your trip. Roads around Muskegon are flat, well-marked, and rarely congested outside of summer Saturdays, so US-31 and I-96 are friendly for new drivers. Start with a shorter, easy run like Muskegon Heights to Muskegon State Park (just 8 miles) for night one, then build confidence before heading to Silver Lake or Ludington. If you're nervous about driving, book a host who offers delivery and skip the wheel entirely.
rvezy.com/trust-and-safetyWhat if something breaks down during my Muskegon Heights RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you're on US-31, parked at Pere Marquette Beach, or deep in the Manistee National Forest. The service handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Your host is also your second lifeline and knows the RV best, so they can troubleshoot quirks (like a finicky water pump or awning) by text in minutes. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything bigger comes up. Pro tip: snap a quick video during your walkthrough so you can reference how systems work later.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my RV across state lines or into Canada from Muskegon Heights?
Yes to other states, and often yes to Canada, just confirm with the host before booking. Most RVezy hosts in Muskegon Heights allow travel throughout the Lower 48, so popular RV road trips from Muskegon Heights include Chicago (about 180 miles south), the Mackinac Bridge and Upper Peninsula (about 290 miles north), and Indiana Dunes National Park (about 170 miles southwest). Canada is a great add-on (Niagara Falls or Tobermory via the Sarnia border crossing) and many hosts allow it with advance notice for insurance documentation; message the host before you book. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Muskegon Heights RV trip?
Fuel is easy to plan for in West Michigan. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 18 MPG for a Class B campervan rental in Muskegon Heights or a truck towing a travel trailer. Michigan gas prices typically track close to the national average. Check current local prices on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's gasoline update before you roll. For a 200-mile loop from Muskegon Heights to Ludington and back, budget roughly $60 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Meijer or Costco on Henry Street before heading north, where prices are usually the lowest in the county.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Muskegon Heights?
For summer weekends, book as early as possible. Michigan state park campgrounds, including Muskegon State Park and P.J. Hoffmaster, open reservations 6 months ahead through midnrreservations.com, and prime Lake Michigan sites for July and August Saturdays sell out within minutes of release. Muskegon County parks (Pioneer Park and Blue Lake) open their seasonal reservations each winter; check the Muskegon County Parks website for the current release date. Private parks like Muskegon KOA and Duck Creek RV Resort fill up 2 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: midweek availability (Sunday through Thursday) is dramatically easier, and Channel Campground at Muskegon State Park often has cancellations that pop up the week of your trip.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Muskegon Heights?
Driving an RV around Muskegon Heights is refreshingly stress-free. Roads here are flat lakeshore terrain with wide lanes on US-31, I-96, and Seaway Drive, so you won't deal with mountain grades or tight switchbacks. Summer brings beach traffic on Friday afternoons heading toward Pere Marquette Beach and Sunday returns south to Grand Rapids, so plan to travel early morning or after 7 p.m. for an easy run. Winter from December through March can bring lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Michigan, with reduced visibility on US-31, so check the National Weather Service Grand Rapids forecast before you roll. Watch for low railroad underpasses in downtown Muskegon (some 11 feet or less); your host will share a recommended route.
weather.gov/grr/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Muskegon Heights?
Most campgrounds near Muskegon Heights are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Muskegon State Park and P.J. Hoffmaster offer modern campgrounds with 30/50-amp electric hookups, potable water spigots throughout the loops (seasonally), flush toilets, hot showers, and on-site sanitation (dump) stations, but no individual sewer hookups at the site. Private parks like Muskegon KOA and Duck Creek RV Resort offer full hookups (water, sewer, and electric at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Pro tip: pick up a Michigan Recreation Passport (about $14 for residents when added to license plate renewal) for unlimited day-use entry to every state park all year.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passportWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Muskegon Heights?
Plenty. Your motorhome rental in Muskegon Heights is essentially a small apartment on wheels. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (most RVs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, furnace, and propane heat are standard, and most rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and either an onboard generator or shore-power capability. Many hosts also include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of toilet paper and tank chemicals; check the Amenities section of each listing. Wi-Fi and cellular boosters are common add-ons. All passengers must use seatbelted seats while the RV is moving.
rvezy.com/trust-and-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts in Muskegon Heights offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generator-hour packages, bike racks, kayak or SUP add-ons, fire pits, outdoor grills, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in the Muskegon Heights, Norton Shores, or North Muskegon area, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough so nothing is a mystery. Many hosts also offer delivery directly to Muskegon State Park, P.J. Hoffmaster, or your rental cottage. Mileage policies vary by listing, with options to prepay extra miles or upgrade to unlimited where the host offers it. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking; it's almost always cheaper than adding them later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Muskegon%20Heights%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is smooth and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. When you book your RV rental in Muskegon Heights, you'll pay securely online with a credit or debit card, including the protection plan and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment, is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after return, assuming no damage and the RV comes back with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff with the host to keep everything transparent and protect your deposit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I go winter RV camping near Muskegon Heights?
Yes, and it's a hidden gem of West Michigan. Muskegon State Park's Lake Michigan Campground stays open for winter RV camping year-round, with electric sites available even in January, plus direct access to the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park's Olympian-designed luge track, ice-skating trail, and cross-country ski trails. For a comfortable cold-weather family RV trip in Muskegon Heights, filter RVezy listings for RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, a propane furnace, and 30-amp shore power so you can stay plugged in at the campground. Daytime January highs hover around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, so layer up. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery so you skip winter driving on the lake-effect snow belt.
