Campgrounds and RV parks near Negaunee, MI

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail runs through Negaunee and connects the city to Ishpeming and Marquette, giving riders a paved, mostly flat route for bikes and e-bikes. The Michigan Iron Industry Museum sits on the Carp River just outside town and covers the region's mining history at no cost to visitors. Mountain biking is a major draw in Marquette County, with singletrack networks around Marquette Mountain and the RAMBA trails near Ishpeming. Paddlers head to Teal Lake, Lake Michigamme at Van Riper State Park, a 1,100-acre park with 1.5 miles of waterfront on both Lake Michigamme and the Peshekee River, and the many small lakes scattered through the surrounding state and county forest lands. Day trips within reach include Presque Isle Park on Lake Superior in Marquette, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore about an hour and a half east near Munising, and the waterfalls along the Dead River and Yellow Dog Plains.

Camping season in the Negaunee area is short and weather-driven. Most private RV parks and state park modern campgrounds open in May and close in mid-October, with a few offering shoulder-season stays into late fall. The Van Riper campground is closed in the winter; however the rustic cabin is available for rent year round. Summer is peak season: July and August bring the warmest, driest conditions and the highest demand, and Independence Day and the weeks around Negaunee's Pioneer Days festival are the busiest stretches in town. Late May and June are quieter but blackfly and mosquito pressure can be intense in the woods, particularly near rivers and standing water. September and early October bring cool nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color across the ridges, and this is one of the better windows for RV travelers who want space at popular sites. Winter is long and snowy in this part of the Upper Peninsula, with cold winters and very snowy conditions, often enhanced by lake-effect snowfall from the Great Lakes. Most campgrounds are closed from November through April, and access roads to backcountry areas like Craig Lake State Park are not plowed.

Sites in the Negaunee area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private RV resorts to water-and-electric or rustic loops at public campgrounds. Van Riper has 147 electric-only sites in a mix of 50 and 30 amp, plus 40 rustic sites for tents and small RVs, with drinking water available at the dump station, and a swim beach on Lake Michigamme. Craig Lake State Park is hike-in backcountry only, with a rough access road and no drive-up RV sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the US-41 corridor through Negaunee, Ishpeming, and Marquette, but drops quickly on backroads and inside larger tracts of state and federal forest. Fuel, groceries, propane, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Marquette. Wildlife includes black bears, deer, and, in the Craig Lake area, moose, so food storage and bear-aware practices apply at rustic and backcountry sites. Biting insects peak from late May through July.
