Campgrounds and RV parks near Harbor Springs, MI

The Little Traverse Wheelway, a 26-mile paved trail that passes by the state park entrance linking Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, is well suited for family cycling. Inside Petoskey State Park, the Old Baldy Trail is a half-mile loop leading to the summit of Old Baldy Dune with panoramic views, and the Portage Trail is a 1-mile out-and-back hike through a wooded dune area. Lake Michigan beaches are the main draw. The park's mile of sandy shoreline is one of the more reliable spots to hunt for Petoskey stones, Michigan's state stone. Lake to Lake Rentals, at the beach house in the day-use area, rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards Memorial Day through Labor Day. Off-park, the M-119 Tunnel of Trees scenic drive runs north from Harbor Springs to Cross Village, and downtown Petoskey's Gaslight District offers shops, restaurants, and a marina.

July and August are the peak months, with warm days, warmer Lake Michigan water temperatures, and the fullest campground occupancy. Weekends and holiday weeks in this window sell out first, and reservations often need to be secured months in advance. Late spring and early fall offer cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and easier site availability. September and early October offer a compelling alternative, with fall color peaks around the first week of October, cooler temperatures for hiking, and campground availability that opens up considerably. Lake water carried over from August also tends to stay warm into September, when the surface temperature typically peaks in the low 70s Fahrenheit. Winter closes most campgrounds. Harbor Springs sees heavy lake-effect snow, with January the snowiest and coldest month. RV travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm each campground's specific open and close dates, as private parks and state park sites do not always share the same schedule.

Petoskey State Park operates two modern campgrounds, Tannery Creek and Dunes, with electrical service, a modern toilet and shower building, a sanitation station, and pull-through sites available. Two mini cabins, Trillium and Orchid, are located in the Tannery Creek Campground; each sleeps four and includes a mini refrigerator, an electric wall heater, and electricity, but campers must provide their own linens. Pets are not allowed along the lakeshore but are welcome in other areas of the park, and must always be on a six-foot leash. Maximum stay at Michigan state parks is 15 nights. Cellular coverage in the immediate Petoskey and Harbor Springs area is generally reliable, though it thins along the Tunnel of Trees route north of town. Parts of the Lake Michigan beach are rocky, so water shoes are useful. Firewood is sold on site at Petoskey State Park and should not be brought in from outside the region.
