Campgrounds and RV parks near North Muskegon, MI

Lake Michigan is the anchor activity. Campers use the beaches at Muskegon State Park and PJ Hoffmaster State Park for swimming, paddling, and sunset viewing. One of Hoffmaster's main attractions is the dune climb along the Dune Overlook Trail, an approximately half-mile roundtrip climb with about 220 steps and benches along the way. For a more moderate hike, the 2-mile Homestead Trail includes a stop at Lake Michigan and the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center exhibits explain how the dunes formed. Families often pair camping with Michigan's Adventure amusement park, the USS Silversides Submarine Museum, and downtown Muskegon. Potable water in that campground runs late April to mid-October, so off-season campers must bring their own water. Summer, late June through August, is peak season. Weekends, holidays, and prime lakefront sites fill quickly, and Michigan DNR sites often book to capacity within minutes of the reservation window opening. Late May and September are quieter shoulder periods with cooler nights and lower occupancy. Lake Michigan has a strong impact on the climate throughout the year. The lake increases cloudiness and snowfall during the fall and winter and moderates the temperature the rest of the year. The area seldom experiences prolonged periods of hot, humid weather in summer or extreme cold in winter. Fall brings the region's heaviest rain months and rapid temperature drops after mid-October.

State park campgrounds in the Muskegon area are modern: paved or hard-packed sites, electric hookups (including 30- and 50-amp service at many sites), flush toilets, and shower buildings. Full sewer hookups are not offered at state parks, but sanitation stations are on site. Muskegon KOA and Duck Creek RV Resort offer full-hookup sites suited to larger rigs.
