Campgrounds near Okemos, Michigan
Okemos sits just east of Lansing in Ingham County, putting RV travelers within a short drive of Michigan State University, the state capitol, and the Grand River corridor. The area is flat to gently rolling, with a mix of woodlots, farmland, and small lakes typical of mid-Michigan.
Options close to town lean private and full-service. Lansing Cottonwood Campground operates on the south side of Lansing with 135 sites, 30 and 50-amp hookups, a pool, laundry, and a camp store, and serves as a common base for MSU visits and Capitol-area sightseeing. Heartland Woods Family RV and Campgrounds-R-Us round out the private choices in the region, while the Michigan Trapshooting Association property serves visitors attending events at the shooting grounds.
For public land, Sleepy Hollow State Park is the closest Michigan DNR campground, roughly 20 minutes north near Laingsburg. The park centers on 410-acre Lake Ovid and offers 181 modern campsites with electric service, along with two cabins.
Things to do near Okemos
Sleepy Hollow State Park anchors most outdoor plans. The park has about 16 miles of hiking and biking trails through prairie grasses, hardwood forest, and stands of pine, a swim beach on Lake Ovid, a boating access site, four fishing piers, a disc golf course, and a designated metal-detecting area. Anglers target largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and muskie on the no-wake lake, and dedicated trails serve horseback riders. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent at the campground office during summer.
In town, families can visit Potter Park Zoo, the Impression 5 Science Center, and the Michigan History Center. The Lansing River Trail runs along the Grand and Red Cedar rivers and is easy to reach from Lansing Cottonwood Campground for biking, running, or an evening walk.

The private campgrounds around Lansing follow the standard mid-Michigan season. Lansing Cottonwood Campground operates from May 1 through November 1, and other private parks in the area run on similar spring-to-fall schedules. Sleepy Hollow State Park keeps its 181 modern campsites open through the warm months and offers two cabins as an additional lodging option.
Summer is the busiest stretch. School-break weekends, the Fourth of July holiday, and MSU move-in and football weekends push demand at both private parks and the state park. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color through the hardwoods, generally peaking in mid-October.
Winter closes most sites. Sleepy Hollow stays open for day use, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing on Lake Ovid, but modern campground loops are typically shut down and services are limited. Spring can be muddy and wet, with variable temperatures into May.

Neil was great with communication on questions I had about the camper. They were on time for delivery and came out again after the trailer had settled and helped us. Great folks to rent from. We will definitely use them again!

We had a great weekend! Pickup and drop off were easy to coordinate and the unit was so light to tow with our Subaru outback. The camper came well equipped and was perfect for off-grid camping.

How to book a campsite near Okemos
Sleepy Hollow State Park uses the Michigan DNR reservation system, powered by Reserve America, at MiDNRReservations.com or by phone at 1-800-447-2757. Campsites, cabins, and harbor slips can be reserved up to six months to the date of arrival on a rolling window, so each day another day six months out becomes available. Popular summer weekends often fill within minutes of opening, so setting a calendar reminder six months out is the standard tactic.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into any state park, recreation area, state boat launch, or state forest campground. Non-resident annual passes cost more than the resident rate, and daily passes are available at park entrances.
Private campgrounds including Lansing Cottonwood, Heartland Woods Family RV, and Campgrounds-R-Us book directly through each operator by phone or website, with policies set by each park.
What to expect
Sleepy Hollow's campground is divided into a north loop and a south loop, each with modern restrooms and showers. Sites are semi-private, most with an asphalt or concrete pad, shrubs for natural privacy, electric service, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Water is available at the sanitation station rather than at individual sites, so RVers typically fill fresh tanks on arrival. Firewood is sold at the park, and out-of-state wood is restricted to slow the spread of tree pests.
Lansing Cottonwood Campground has 135 sites ranging from 50-amp full hookups and premium lakeside sites to 30-amp water and electric and rustic tent areas, with an outdoor pool, laundry, a camp store, and a playground on site. Front loops feel more open; primitive sites in the back are shaded and quieter.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Okemos%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Okemos?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Okemos for the vast majority of motorhomes and trailers on the road. Michigan only requires special endorsements for unusually heavy combinations over 26,000 pounds or for towing a fifth-wheel plus a second trailer (the rare Recreational Double 'R' endorsement), which is not relevant for typical rentals. To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit before you fly. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they are approved and ready to roll.

Your host is typically reachable by message too, and most Okemos-area hosts are quick responders. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number from your booking confirmation and save it in your phone before you leave the driveway.

The main things to watch for are winter conditions from late November through March (snow, ice, and lake-effect bands west of US-127), summer thunderstorms, and the occasional deer at dawn and dusk, especially on rural roads near Mason and Williamston. Avoid low-clearance bridges in downtown Lansing's older neighborhoods. Mileage policies vary by host (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and overage rates are clearly posted. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Okemos%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, no cash or e-transfers to the host. You will see the full breakdown (nightly rate, fees, taxes, add-ons) before confirming, so there are no surprises. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment, typically as a pre-authorization hold before pickup, and released after the trip if the RV comes back in the same condition. Avoid issues by doing a thorough walkaround photo or video with your host at pickup and drop-off, RVezy's in-app messaging keeps everything documented. Pro tip: use a credit card with travel protections for the deposit hold, it keeps your checking account untouched while you enjoy your rent an RV in Okemos getaway.
