Campgrounds near Oscoda, Michigan
Oscoda sits on Lake Huron's Sunrise Coast at the mouth of the Au Sable River, with the Huron-Manistee National Forest wrapping the town to the west. That mix of Great Lake shoreline, river frontage, and public forest gives RV travelers an unusual range of options within a short drive, from full-hookup commercial parks to lakeshore state park campgrounds.
The closest anchor properties are Oscoda / Tawas KOA Holiday for full-service RV camping, plus Tawas River RV Park and Brown's Landing RV Park for river-oriented stays. State park camping is centered at Tawas Point State Park, roughly fifteen miles south on a Lake Huron sand spit, and Harrisville State Park about twenty miles north along the same shoreline.
The area is also cut by the River Road National Scenic Byway, which follows the Au Sable River west of town past several Consumers Energy impoundments and Forest Service recreation sites. Most RV travelers use Oscoda itself as a base and day-trip from there.
Things to do around Oscoda
The Au Sable River is the headline activity. Canoe and kayak liveries operate in Oscoda, Mio, Hale, and Glennie, and the river supports salmon and trout runs, with additional fishing for perch, bass, walleye, and pike in Lake Huron.
Lake Huron beaches run for miles in both directions. Tawas Point State Park has shallow, warm swimming water on the Tawas Bay side and a historic Victorian-era lighthouse, while Harrisville State Park has a designated swim beach on Lake Huron and a stand of pine and cedar shading most of the campground.
Inland, the River Road National Scenic Byway leads to the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center and overlooks of the Au Sable valley. The Tawas Bay Multi-Use Trails and Alabaster Pathway, part of Michigan's Iron Belle Trail, connect to Tawas Point State Park for cycling straight from a campsite.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Lake Huron water temperatures are swimmable and every campground is fully staffed. Summer weekends and holidays book out first, especially shoreline sites at Tawas Point State Park and Harrisville State Park, which regularly fill months ahead.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and still viable for RV travel. Harrisville State Park's camping facilities operate from mid-April through early November, and Tawas Point State Park follows a similar modern-camping window. Fall brings color along the River Road byway and cooler nights that suit campfires.
Winter shuts down most developed campgrounds in the area, including the state park modern loops. A few mini-cabins at Harrisville State Park remain in the reservation system for travelers equipped for cold-weather use, but RV services are limited in the cold months and much of the Huron-Manistee National Forest recreation infrastructure closes for the season.
How to book
Michigan state park campsites and lodging at Tawas Point State Park and Harrisville State Park are reserved through the Michigan DNR system at midnrreservations.com or by phone at 1-800-447-2757. The booking window opens six months before the arrival date, and a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
Oscoda / Tawas KOA Holiday reserves directly through the KOA website or by calling the property. Tawas River RV Park and Brown's Landing RV Park are private operators that take bookings direct through their own sites or by phone.
For U.S. Forest Service campgrounds along the Au Sable River corridor off the River Road byway, reservations are handled through Recreation.gov where required. Book summer weekends as early as the window opens; walk-up availability near Oscoda is rare in July and August.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Tawas Point State Park are on a low sand spit with water on three sides, meaning sunrise over Lake Huron and sunset over Tawas Bay from the same campground. Modern sites are electric with access to water spigots and a dump station, and lines can form at the sanitation station on turnover days.
Harrisville State Park has 195 modern sites in a pine and cedar stand, with a paved trail into the town of Harrisville and a swim beach on Lake Huron. Some low-lying sites can hold water after heavy rain.
Oscoda / Tawas KOA Holiday runs full-hookup RV sites with a seasonal pool, camp store, and family amenities. Tawas River RV Park and Brown's Landing RV Park are smaller, river-focused properties. Cell service can be spotty inside the Huron-Manistee National Forest, so download maps before leaving town.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Oscoda, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Oscoda, MI?
RV rental in Oscoda is one of the best values in northern Michigan, with most rentals ranging from about $90 to $250 per night depending on the RV type. Travel trailers and pop-ups tend to be the cheapest RV rental Oscoda offers, while Class C motorhomes and larger fifth wheels sit at the higher end. You can save by booking midweek, traveling in May or September shoulder season, or choosing a delivered trailer so you skip towing fees. Pro tip: AuSable River Canoe Marathon weekend in late July books up fast, so lock in your dates 2 to 3 months ahead for the best pricing on Lake Huron waterfront getaways.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oscoda,%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Oscoda, Michigan?
Good news, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oscoda. Michigan does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers used recreationally, even for big Class A coaches. You'll just need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. That's it, no Michigan-specific paperwork, no DMV visits, no surprise tests before you hit US-23 toward the lake.
michigan.gov/sos/license-id/types-of-licensesIs there protection or roadside assistance included with my Oscoda RV rental?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Oscoda comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can enjoy the Lake Huron shoreline with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on M-65 or a dead battery at Old Orchard Park, one call gets help dispatched. It is meaningful financial protection that makes first time RV renters feel a lot more relaxed before heading out on their Oscoda RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Oscoda RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Oscoda is low risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money back grace period right after you book. After that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel before your trip start date. Northern Michigan weather can shift quickly, so this structure matters. You will see the exact terms before you confirm, and RVezy support is available if plans change. Book the dates you want now and you still have room to adjust later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Oscoda RV rental?
Absolutely, pet friendly RV rental Oscoda options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet Friendly filter when you search. Many local hosts welcome dogs because Oscoda is a great dog town: Huron National Forest trails, the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center grounds, and Lake Huron public beaches near Oscoda Township Park allow leashed pets. The River Road National Scenic Byway is a beautiful leashed dog stroll along the AuSable. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (often $25 to $75) and share your dog's size and breed so check in goes smoothly.
fs.usda.gov/hmnfCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Oscoda?
Yes, RV delivery Oscoda is one of the most popular options on RVezy and the easiest path for first time renters. Many local hosts will tow the trailer or motorhome directly to your campsite at places like Old Orchard Park or Tawas Point State Park, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. You just show up with groceries. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this, and check each listing for delivery fees (often based on mileage from the host's location). It is the closest thing to a turn key Oscoda RV trip you will find.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/tawas-pointHow far can I drive on a typical Oscoda RV rental?
You have plenty of range for a great Michigan road trip. Most Oscoda hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per mile fee beyond that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer loop. From Oscoda you can reach Mackinaw City in about 3 hours, Traverse City in roughly 3 hours, Detroit in about 3.5 hours, and Sleeping Bear Dunes in around 3.5 to 4 hours. Filter listings by mileage policy or message the host directly to confirm. Pro tip: if you are staying within Iosco County and bouncing between the AuSable and Lake Huron beaches, even a low mileage cap is plenty.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oscoda,%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Oscoda, MI?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Oscoda. Top picks include Old Orchard Park (a Iosco County campground right on the AuSable River with full hookups and a boat launch), Tawas Point State Park about 15 minutes south (the "Cape Cod of the Midwest" with Lake Huron beaches), Monument Campground in the Huron National Forest along River Road, and Rollways Campground on the bluff above the AuSable. For a more rustic vibe, try Round Lake Campground deeper in the national forest. Pro tip: Old Orchard sites with river frontage are the most coveted, so book those first when reservations open.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/tawas-pointWhen is the best time of year for an Oscoda RV trip?
Late June through early September is the sweet spot for an Oscoda RV trip, with daytime highs in the upper 70s to low 80s F and Lake Huron warm enough for swimming by mid July. May and early June are quieter and great for fishing the AuSable, though nights can dip into the 40s. September brings comfortable 70s, fewer bugs, and the start of fall color along River Road, peaking in early to mid October. Winters are cold with lake effect snow, so most RV hosts operate April through October. Pro tip: time your visit to the AuSable River Canoe Marathon in late July for one of Michigan's most iconic events.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Oscoda?
You will do great, Oscoda is one of the most forgiving places in Michigan for a first time renting an RV. Roads like US-23 and M-65 are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to downstate, and most campgrounds have pull through sites so you barely need to back up. Every RVezy host gives you a hands on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through propane, the water system, slide outs, and dumping. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions. Pro tip: choose a delivered travel trailer for your first booking so you can focus on enjoying the AuSable instead of towing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003107574-For-RentersWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Oscoda?
You are covered, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one call away whether you are parked at Lumberman's Monument or driving the River Road Scenic Byway. The service handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Oscoda has local mechanics in town and in Tawas City (10 minutes south), with larger service centers in Bay City about an hour away if something major comes up. Your host is also a phone call away for RV specific questions like resetting the generator or troubleshooting the fridge. You are never stranded on this trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Oscoda?
An RV road trip from Oscoda opens up some of Michigan's most beautiful country. The classic Sunrise Coast run heads north on US-23 to Alpena (about 1 hour) and Mackinaw City (around 3 hours), with stops at Negwegon State Park and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Westbound, you can reach Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes in roughly 3 to 4 hours via M-72. The Upper Peninsula is doable in 4 to 5 hours over the Mackinac Bridge. Heading south, Frankenmuth's Bavarian charm is about 2 hours away. Pro tip: the River Road National Scenic Byway right out your door is a 22 mile must drive along the AuSable, perfect for a half day loop.
fs.usda.gov/hmnfWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost in Oscoda?
Budget realistically and you'll have no surprises. Class C motorhomes in the Oscoda area typically get 8-12 MPG, Class A coaches 6-10 MPG, campervans 15-20 MPG, and trucks towing travel trailers around 10-14 MPG. Gas prices in northern Michigan generally track close to the state average (often $3.00-$3.75 per gallon recently), with stations in Oscoda, Tawas City, and along US-23 being convenient fill-up points. Diesel is widely available at the larger Tawas-area stations. Pro tip: top off before you head into the Huron National Forest, because gas stations get sparse once you turn off River Road toward Mio.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Oscoda?
For the best campgrounds near Oscoda, book as early as you can, Michigan State Parks like Tawas Point release reservations 6 months in advance through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and the AuSable River Canoe Marathon weekend) can sell out within minutes. Iosco County parks like Old Orchard also book up fast for waterfront sites. For Huron National Forest campgrounds, use Recreation.gov, also bookable 6 months out. Pro tip: if you missed the window, midweek nights almost always have openings, and many private parks around Oscoda hold sites for walk-ins, just call ahead.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Oscoda?
Driving an RV around Oscoda is refreshingly easy. US-23 along the Lake Huron shoreline is flat, two lane, and scenic with light traffic outside of summer weekends. M-65 and River Road have gentle curves with no significant grades, and you will not deal with low bridges or tight tunnels in Iosco County. Watch for white tailed deer at dawn and dusk (especially on M-65 north of Glennie) and for sandy shoulders if you pull off. Winter brings lake effect snow and ice from November through March, which is why most RV hosts operate spring through fall. Pro tip: avoid driving the long sandy two tracks into the national forest unless your host has specifically okayed it.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at Oscoda-area campgrounds?
You'll find a great mix of options. Full-hookup sites (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer) are standard at Old Orchard Park and most private RV parks around Oscoda, while Tawas Point State Park offers electric and water with a central dump station. Huron National Forest campgrounds like Monument and Rollways are more rustic, typically with vault toilets and hand-pump water, perfect if you want quiet. Dump stations are easy to find at Tawas Point, Old Orchard, and several gas stations along US-23. Most parks have potable water fills near the entrance. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a basic sewer kit, even on full-hookup sites the spigots aren't always close.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/tawas-pointWhat features and amenities come in a typical Oscoda RV rental?
Most motorhome rental Oscoda and travel trailer listings come fully equipped for a comfortable Up North trip: a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, furnace, and propane are standard. Many rentals also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and an onboard generator for boondocking, with WiFi hotspots offered as add ons by some hosts. Seatbelt counts vary by RV, so check the listing if you have a bigger crew. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and amenities to match exactly what your family RV trip Oscoda needs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oscoda,%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options are available when I rent an RV in Oscoda?
Hosts in Oscoda offer genuinely useful extras to customize your trip. Common add ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes, outdoor grills, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (a huge win for the AuSable River), generators, and portable WiFi. Pickup is usually at the host's address in or near Oscoda, but many also offer delivery straight to your campsite. Mileage policies vary by listing and are shown clearly on each page, so you can compare easily. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a paddleboard add on turns your campervan rental Oscoda into a full waterfront vacation with zero hauling on your end.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oscoda,%20MichiganHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, so your booking is protected end to end. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after your trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid deposit issues, take date stamped photos at pickup and drop off, return the RV with the fuel and propane level noted in your agreement, and follow the dumping and cleaning expectations the host walks you through. Pro tip: ask your host at pickup which dump station they prefer you use.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Oscoda RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross border travel from Oscoda into Canada is possible on some rentals but not all, it depends on the host and the insurance terms on the specific listing. Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because coverage does not extend there. If you are dreaming of crossing at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron (about 2.5 hours south) to explore Ontario's Lake Huron shoreline or the Bruce Peninsula, message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm it is permitted. Bring your passport or enhanced driver's license for the border. Pro tip: many renters find Michigan's own Sunrise Coast and Upper Peninsula offer plenty of adventure without the border crossing.
