Camping near Otsego, Michigan
Otsego sits in southwest Michigan's Allegan County, roughly midway between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids along the US-131 corridor. The area is glacial lake country, with kettle lakes, wooded ridges, and small rivers within a short drive of town, giving RV travelers a mix of full-service private resorts and state-managed lakeside campgrounds to choose from.
The closest large public option is Gun Lake - Yankee Springs RA, a Michigan DNR park east of Otsego. The recreation area covers roughly 5,200 acres with multiple inland lakes inside its boundaries, supporting fishing, water sports, hiking, biking, and winter activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Private resorts such as Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort and Sun Retreats Gun Lake add pool complexes, planned activities, and full-hookup pull-throughs sized for larger rigs.
Smaller lake-focused options round out the mix. East Lake Camping and Dumont Lake Campground are family-oriented sites within easy reach of Otsego, useful for shorter stays or when the state park loops are full on summer weekends.
Things to do near Otsego
Water is the main draw. Gun Lake is the largest lake inside Yankee Springs and supports fishing, boating, and swimming, and the park's inland lakes are popular with anglers for panfish, northern pike, muskie, and bass. Kayaks and paddleboards launch easily from the day-use beach, and the boat ramp handles trailered craft.
On land, Yankee Springs has an extensive trail network used for hiking and mountain biking, including a 13-mile mountain bike loop. Points of interest inside the park include the Devil's Soupbowl kettle formation, Graves Hill scenic overlook, and the Sassafras Interpretive Trail near the Gun Lake campground office.
Off-park attractions include Gun Lake Casino, wineries and breweries along the Kalamazoo corridor, the Air Zoo aerospace museum, and the Kal-Haven Trail for cycling.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This is when beaches, boat ramps, and modern campgrounds operate at full capacity, and it is also when reservations disappear fastest for waterfront sites. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends at Gun Lake, so early booking is essential for waterfront spots. Private resorts follow a similar pattern, with water service typically shut off during the coldest months and full amenities running Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and often more comfortable for RV travel. Bugs ease off, sites open up midweek, and the surrounding hardwoods deliver strong fall color through October. Nights cool quickly after Labor Day, so a furnace or catalytic heater is useful for shoulder-season trips.
Winter shifts the region toward snow sports. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing are popular at Yankee Springs, though the modern campground loop closes for the season and services scale back sharply.

How to book campsites near Otsego
State park sites at Gun Lake - Yankee Springs RA are booked through the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com or by phone. Sites are available up to six months in advance, and booking early is advisable for weekends during peak season. A Michigan Recreation Passport is also required for vehicle entry. The Recreation Passport covers state parks and recreation areas, state-managed boating access sites, state forest campgrounds, and thousands of miles of trails.
Private resorts use their own booking channels. Sun Retreats Gun Lake reserves through the Sun Outdoors platform, while Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort operates on a membership model with limited nightly access. East Lake Camping and Dumont Lake Campground handle bookings directly by phone or through their websites.
Standard state-park check-in is 3 p.m. with a 1 p.m. checkout, and quiet hours run 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.
What to expect on the ground
Site style varies more than the map suggests. The Gun Lake modern loop at Yankee Springs offers around 200 sites for tent, trailer, and RV camping, equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and electric hookups. Sites are semi-modern with varying sizes, some tight for larger rigs, and most are wooded and fairly level. There is no sewer at individual sites, so plan on a dump-station stop near the park entrance.
Private resorts skew larger and more amenity-heavy. Sun Retreats Gun Lake sites are pet-friendly with full hookups and 30- or 50-amp electric, and Outdoor Adventures Kalamazoo Resort offers full 50-amp hookups on solid pads with picnic tables and fire rings.
Cell coverage is generally solid across the corridor but can drop in the park's deeper valleys, resort Wi-Fi is common but variable, and firewood is best purchased locally to comply with Michigan's movement restrictions.

Many first time renting an RV guests opt for delivery so the host parks it for you. Private parks like Schnable Lake and Jellystone Wabasis typically allow bookings a year out. For shoulder season (May or late September), two to four weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Driving around Otsego is genuinely relaxed compared to Michigan's bigger metros. US-131 is a 4-lane divided highway with easy on-ramps, and M-89 through downtown Otsego is straightforward, though watch the railroad crossing on Farmer Street. Summer brings occasional thunderstorms and the occasional deer on rural roads at dusk, so drive a bit slower around sunset. In winter, lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan can roll in fast between November and March, making US-131 slick, plan extra travel time and check MDOT's Mi Drive map before heading out. Pro tip: avoid the M-89 stretch through Plainwell during the 3 to 5 p.m. school rush if you're driving a big Class A.

Mileage policies vary by listing, so check before booking. Pro tip: ask your host about a generator add-on if you're heading to rustic Allegan State Game Area sites without electric hookups.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/orv-trailsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Booking an RV rental in Otsego, MI through RVezy is straightforward and secure, all payments are handled inside the platform with no cash handoffs. You pay your trip total upfront when you book (rental cost, protection plan, taxes, and any fees), and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition with no traffic violations, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to ensure your deposit comes back fast and avoid any miscommunication.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Otsego RV rental to Canada?
Possibly, yes, but it requires a quick conversation first. Many RVezy hosts in Otsego allow cross-border trips into Canada (Windsor, Toronto, and Niagara are popular runs from Michigan), but it depends on the individual host and insurance confirmation, so message them directly from the listing before booking to get written approval. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. If you're heading to Canada, bring your passport, vehicle registration, the host's written authorization, and proof of the protection plan. Pro tip: the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron is about 3 hours from Otsego and is usually a faster crossing than the Detroit-Windsor tunnel for big rigs.
