Campgrounds near Pigeon, Michigan
Pigeon sits in Michigan's Thumb region, roughly midway between Saginaw Bay and the tip of the peninsula at Port Austin. The village is a practical base for exploring Huron County's Lake Huron shoreline, farm country, and the state parks that hug the coast. RV travelers typically use Pigeon as a launch point for beach camping on Saginaw Bay and the outer Thumb.
Albert E. Sleeper State Park covers 723 acres of forest, wetlands, forested dunes and half a mile of sandy shoreline along Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay, with a modern campground shaded by trees near the beach. Farther north, Port Crescent State Park sits just outside Port Austin at the tip of Michigan's thumb, set along 3 miles of sandy Lake Huron shoreline, with a modern campground featuring waterfront views plus lodging options like geodesic domes, camper cabins and cottages.
Closer to town, Camper's Haven Family Campground and Sebewaing River Campground offer private, family-oriented options with hookups. Brown's Landing RV Park rounds out the local list for RV travelers who want simpler stays without the state park reservation window.
Things to do near Pigeon
Lake Huron dominates the itinerary. A day-use beach with a half-mile of sandy shoreline sits across M-25 from Sleeper State Park's campground, connected by a pedestrian overpass, and kayakers routinely paddle from Port Austin to Turnip Rock. The rock formation rises from the water and is accessible via a 7-mile out-and-back canoe or kayak trip, with local outfitters providing rentals.
Port Crescent State Park is a birding and stargazing destination. An observation platform near Parking Lot D is popular for viewing birds of prey during migration and for dark-sky viewing in the park's dark sky preserve. Seasonal naturalists offer weekly nature programming from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Inland, families visit Caseville for shops and beaches, and the region is known for walleye fishing on Saginaw Bay.

The camping season in the Thumb is short and predictable. Sleeper State Park's campground typically operates from May through October, and Port Crescent State Park's campground is open from mid-April through mid-October, though winter visitors can still enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on park trails. Private parks in the area tend to open in mid-April and close in mid-October.
Summer is peak. The lakeside beaches provide relief from the heat, and while spring and fall bring cooler weather suited to hiking and beach walks, weekday visits can feel almost empty. Waterfront and electric sites fill quickly for summer weekends and holidays, so booking as soon as the six-month window opens is advised, especially for a specific site.
Winter effectively closes the coastal campgrounds. Heavy snowfall and lake-effect winds limit access, and RV travel through the Thumb gives way to day-use trails and skiing.
How to book campgrounds near Pigeon
Michigan state parks use one central system. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips at Sleeper and Port Crescent can be reserved at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. The reservation window opens six months to the date of arrival in advance, and popular Saginaw Bay weekends are often claimed the day the window opens.
Every vehicle also needs a park pass. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all Michigan state park and forest campgrounds. It can be added when renewing a Michigan license plate or purchased at a park entrance.
Private campgrounds such as Camper's Haven Family Campground, Sebewaing River Campground, and Brown's Landing RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. These generally have shorter lead times than the state parks but still fill for holiday weekends.
What to expect on-site
State park sites in the area are modern but straightforward. Sleeper offers 226 sites with 30- or 50-amp electric hookups but no individual water hookups; potable water is available at spigots throughout the campground, along with modern restrooms, showers, and a sanitation station. There are no pull-through sites at Sleeper, so RVs are assigned a plot and configured to fit.
Port Crescent's campground has over 140 modern sites, all with electric service (20-, 30-, or 50-amp) and some with full hookups, plus fire rings and picnic tables. Many sites are on or a short walk from the Saginaw Bay or Old Pinnebog River shoreline, and RVs and trailers up to 50 feet can be accommodated.
Private parks in the area typically trade lake frontage for resort-style amenities alongside standard restrooms, showers, and a dump station.
