Campgrounds near Pinckney, Michigan
Pinckney sits in Livingston County in southeast Michigan, roughly 20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, and serves as the base for one of the busiest state-park camping clusters in the Lower Peninsula. With a total land area of 11,000 acres, Pinckney Recreation Area is a popular destination in south-central Michigan, made up of several connected but spread-out parcels of land, and the village of Pinckney sits directly east of the park's northeast corner. The landscape is glacial: kettle lakes, swampy lowlands, and glacial moraines shape the trails, campsites, and paddling routes.
RV travelers typically choose between Michigan DNR state-park campgrounds inside Pinckney Recreation Area and the neighboring Brighton Recreation Area, or private full-hookup options like Hell Creek Ranch and Campground. Pinckney State Recreation Area is home to several campgrounds and many miles of hiking trails. Bruin Lake Modern Campground has 186 modern campsites with electric service for recreational vehicles and modern restrooms, plus a boat launch, fishing and swimming areas, and a playground. Blind Lake Rustic Campground has ten rustic campsites with vault toilets and is a hike-in camping area. Crooked Lake Campground is also a rustic campsite with 12 camping areas.
A short drive east, the 4,947-acre Brighton Recreation Area is home to nine lakes, five campgrounds, a designated swim beach, boating access sites, picnic areas and a disc golf course, as well as fishing, boating and paddling amenities. Together the two parks give RV travelers a wide range of site types within a short drive of downtown Pinckney.
Things to do around Pinckney
Trails dominate the area. Pinckney State Recreation Area is one of the larger state parks in Michigan with 11,000 acres, 20 lakes, and more than 40 miles of multi-use trails. Silver Lake is a center of park activities with swimming beach on the lake as well as access to a number of trails including the 17-mile Potawatomi mountain bike trail.
Water activities are the second draw. The chain of lakes supports swimming, boating, canoeing, and fishing. Bishop Lake Campground Office offers kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards for rent. You can rent them for 2 hours, 4 hours, or all day. They provide life jackets, and the vessels are first come, first served.
Horse camping is a distinctive feature. The Equestrian Camp at Brighton State Recreation Area gives riders direct access to 21 miles of well-maintained bridle trails, offering diverse terrain and scenic views. Murray Lake at Brighton adds a quieter rustic option for tent and small-rig campers.

Seasonal info for Pinckney camping

March - May
57° / 37°F 80 mmMild and wet; parks reopen, trails often muddy

June - August
81° / 61°F 88 mmPeak season; modern electric sites book months out

December - February
32° / 19°F 55 mmCold and snowy; rustic loops and hike-in sites impractical
The prime RV window runs from spring through early fall. Reservations are strongly recommended in the Pinckney area, especially on summer weekends when modern loops book out quickly. Private grounds run a similar calendar, and Hell Creek Ranch and Campground operates roughly April through October. Bruin Lake Modern Campground is open from the end of March through November and features 186 sites with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric hookups available.
Rustic sites at Brighton follow a shorter season. Reservations can be made in advance, and the campground is typically open seasonally from April through October. Shoulder-season trips can be productive: spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds, while summers are warm and humid, though the lakes help campers cool off.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Modern loops with electric service remain the practical choice once temperatures drop, while rustic and hike-in sites like Blind Lake become far less usable in snow. Firewood must be sourced locally: invasive insects and diseases have spread in Michigan on firewood hauled between regions, so campers should purchase certified heat-treated firewood at state parks, local stores, and roadside stands.

Vanessa was a fantastic host! We appreciated the helpful walk through. The RV was fantastic and really made our vacation a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!!!

My wife and I had a fantastic first-time RV rental from Vanessa. We attended a 3-day music festival and our accommodations were everything we had hoped for. Right from the start we were able to totally enjoy our trip. Vanessa's associate did a fantastic job orienting us to the RV and covered everything that we needed to know; nothing was missed. We were able to level the RV and set it up for three days of fun with no problem at all. Vanessa thought of everything that we would need to be self sufficient; from garbage bags to paper towels, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, salt and pepper, dish soap, hangers, fly swatter, etc., etc. We had EVERYTHING we needed, all we had to pack was our clothes and food. We had no issues with the RV at all. We couldn't have asked for a better RV rental experience than we had with Vanessa. When we rent again, it will be through Vanessa for sure!!! Thank you Vanessa!!!

How to book a campsite near Pinckney
State-park sites at Pinckney and Brighton run through the Michigan DNR reservation system. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance. Bookings can be made online at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling the Michigan state parks reservation line. Modern lake-view and electric sites at Bruin Lake fill quickly once the window opens.
Rustic and hike-in sites still need to be booked ahead. Reservations are required for hike-in sites at Blind Lake, and campers check in at the park office on the day of arrival.
A park pass is required on top of the site fee. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds. Hell Creek Ranch and Campground books directly through the operator's own website rather than the DNR portal.
What to expect at Pinckney-area campgrounds
Site styles vary widely. Modern loops at Bruin Lake and Bishop Lake offer electric hookups, flush restrooms, and shower buildings; rustic loops such as Crooked Lake, Blind Lake, and Murray Lake have vault toilets and no electric service. Sites have electric, no water. There is a dump station. Water spigots are spread throughout the modern loops, and leveling blocks are useful on the older grass and dirt sites.
Hell Creek Ranch and Campground trends more full-service, with a mix of electric and primitive sites, restrooms and showers, a dump station, and a swimming pool. It can accommodate larger rigs than most rustic state-park loops.
Bring standard Michigan-woods gear: bug spray in summer, layers in shoulder seasons, and a plan for food storage. Wildlife is common throughout the Pinckney area, so food needs to be stored properly. Pets are allowed in the Pinckney Recreation Area, but must always be kept on a six-foot leash. Your furry friends are not permitted on any designated beaches or in any state-owned structures.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pinckney, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pinckney, MI?
RV rental in Pinckney is more affordable than most travelers expect, especially since you are renting directly from local owners rather than a big rental fleet. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range about $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs land between about $225 and $400 nightly. For a cheap RV rental Pinckney getaway, target weekdays in May or September when both nightly rates and Bruin Lake campsites are easier to grab. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy to skip the cost of towing or fuel from pickup. Many Livingston County hosts will drop the RV right at your Pinckney Recreation Area campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pinckney%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Pinckney, Michigan?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pinckney for nearly every rig on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking flow. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club along with your home license. That is it: no extra paperwork and no Secretary of State visit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Pinckney protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Pinckney booked through RVezy comes with a built-in protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Potawatomi Trail trailheads or head to Hell, Michigan with peace of mind. The renter protection plan covers most accidental damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage tier during checkout, not the host. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial protection, especially helpful for first-timers navigating gravel roads around Bruin Lake or tight kettle-lake campground loops. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers at booking and pick the level that matches your comfort. Higher tiers significantly reduce your out-of-pocket exposure if something happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Pinckney RV trip?
You can book your Pinckney RV trip with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, so the terms apply consistently across every listing. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. Because the policy is standardized, you do not have to compare fine print between rigs. Just pick the RV you love, lock in your dates around Pinckney Recreation Area, and know the safety net is built in. Pro tip: review the cancellation details on the listing before you book, and reach out to RVezy support if severe weather or another major disruption affects your plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Pinckney, MI?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental Pinckney trip is one of the most popular ways to explore Livingston County, and your dog will love it as much as you do. On RVezy, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome four-legged guests, then message them about any cleaning fees or breed notes before booking. Pinckney Recreation Area allows leashed pets (6-foot leash maximum) on most trails, including the Potawatomi Trail and Crooked Lake Trail, though they are not permitted on designated swim beaches or inside park buildings. Pro tip: Silver Lake's perimeter walk is a great off-the-beach option for dogs, and Hell Creek Ranch just down the road is well known for being dog-friendly.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Pinckney?
Yes, RV delivery in Pinckney is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig down North Territorial Road. Many RVezy hosts in the Pinckney, Brighton, Howell, and Ann Arbor area offer delivery directly to Bruin Lake Modern Campground, Crooked Lake Rustic, Hell Creek Ranch, or even your driveway if you are hosting visiting family. The host will level the RV, hook up to shore power and water, and walk you through every system from the propane stove to the awning. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message to confirm the fee, which typically scales with distance from their home base.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pinckney%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive on a Pinckney RV trip and how does mileage work?
You've got plenty of road to explore on a Pinckney RV trip without worrying about racking up huge mileage fees. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer Michigan loops. From Pinckney you're roughly 55 miles to Detroit, 65 miles to Lansing, 130 miles to Grand Rapids, 240 miles to Mackinaw City, and 290 miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Each listing displays the mileage policy and any per-mile overage rate. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop up to the Mitten's pinky, message the host before booking and ask about an unlimited-mileage upgrade.
michigan.gov/mdotWhere are the best campgrounds near Pinckney, MI for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice for best campgrounds near Pinckney, MI, all within 20 minutes of downtown. Bruin Lake Modern Campground (21237 Kaiser Rd, Gregory) inside Pinckney Recreation Area has roughly 160 sites with 30/50-amp electric, paved pads on the lower loop, and direct lake access. Crooked Lake Rustic Campground offers a quieter, no-hookup experience three miles east. Hell Creek Ranch & Campground (10866 Cedar Lake Rd) is the local family favorite with a pool, full hookups, and trail access. Bishop Lake Campground in nearby Brighton Recreation Area has flush toilets and a swim beach about six miles from town. Pro tip: book Bruin Lake six months ahead on MiDNRReservations.com, especially for waterfront sites #7 and #20.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/pinckneyWhen is the best time of year for RV camping Pinckney?
The sweet spot for RV camping Pinckney is mid-May through early October, with June and September standing out as the smartest combination of mild weather and lighter crowds. Summer highs in Pinckney average 78 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for swimming at Halfmoon Lake or paddling the Chain of Lakes. Spring brings 50 to 70 degree days and budding trails (great for the Potawatomi Loop), while fall delivers spectacular color across the glacial moraine landscape from late September through mid-October. Winter camping is possible at Bruin Lake (it's open year-round with electric sites), but expect 15 to 36 degree lows. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak foliage on the Crooked Lake Trail.
weather.gov/dtx/I am a first time renting an RV. How do I know I will not get stuck figuring it out?
You will not be stuck. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough before you drive off, which is especially helpful when you are first time renting an RV in a rural area like Pinckney with its narrow lake roads. Expect 30 to 60 minutes covering propane, slide-outs, the water system, dump valves, and the generator. Many Pinckney-area hosts also send a printed cheat sheet and stay reachable by phone during your trip, and RVezy customer support is available if you need backup. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Pinckney for your first trip. They handle like a large truck and fit easily into Bruin Lake's tree-lined sites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I get a flat tire or breakdown during my Pinckney RV trip?
You are covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so a flat on North Territorial Road or a dead battery at Silver Lake does not turn into a trip-ender. One call connects you to dispatch for tire changes, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Cell service can be spotty deep inside Pinckney Recreation Area, especially near Blind Lake, so save the roadside number in your contacts and screenshot the host's number before you head into the trees. Pro tip: the nearest RV-capable service hubs are in Ann Arbor and Brighton, both under 20 miles from downtown Pinckney, so help is genuinely close.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are good RV road trip routes from Pinckney?
An RV road trip from Pinckney can take you almost anywhere in the Lower Peninsula in a single day. Popular routes include the run west to Saugatuck and Lake Michigan's sunset beaches (about 150 miles), the drive north to Mackinaw City via I-75 (about 245 miles), the haul to Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 240 miles, an easy 2-night stop), and a loop through Lansing to Grand Ledge's sandstone cliffs (about 75 miles). Cross-border trips into Canada via the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron (about 90 miles east) are typically allowed, but message your host first to confirm coverage extends. Heads up: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: add Tahquamenon Falls if you have a full week.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhat should I budget for fuel during a Pinckney RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items on an RV rental in Michigan, but it is easy to plan for. Michigan's regular unleaded prices fluctuate week to week, so check the current AAA Michigan average before your trip; Ann Arbor (12 miles south of Pinckney) often runs a few cents above the state average. Class B campervans typically get about 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes about 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs about 6 to 10 MPG. For a weekend of local exploring (roughly 200 miles total), plan a fuel budget based on the current price and your rig's MPG. Pro tip: top off in Brighton or Howell where prices tend to run a bit lower than Ann Arbor.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=MIHow far in advance should I reserve a campground near Pinckney?
Book early and you'll get the site you want, Michigan State Parks open reservations exactly six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com, and Bruin Lake's waterfront and electric sites can sell out within minutes for summer weekends. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day at Pinckney Recreation Area, set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark. Private parks like Hell Creek Ranch take direct bookings and tend to fill 1 to 3 months out for peak weekends. Mid-week stays in June or September are usually easy to grab even a week ahead. Pro tip: all Michigan state campgrounds require a Recreation Passport (around $14 for residents, $11 daily for out-of-state) for vehicle entry, add it during your reservation.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like around Pinckney?
Driving an RV in Pinckney is refreshingly low-stress compared to a major metro, you're in rolling glacial-moraine country with two-lane roads, light traffic, and well-maintained pavement on the main routes (M-36, D-19, North Territorial Road, and Dexter-Pinckney Road). The biggest things to watch are winding lake-edge curves, the occasional deer, and a few low-clearance railroad underpasses near Hamburg, so plan your route on Google Maps with the RV's height in mind (most rigs are 10 to 13 feet tall). Winter brings snow and lake-effect ice from December through March. Pro tip: avoid US-23 northbound through Ann Arbor at 5 PM on weekdays, take Whitmore Lake Road instead for a calmer ride home.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities can I expect at Pinckney-area campgrounds?
You'll find a real range of campground equipment and amenities around Pinckney, from full hookups to true rustic. Bruin Lake Modern Campground offers 30 and 50-amp electric at all sites, two renovated bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, a dump station, potable water spigots, a sand swim area, and a boat launch on the Chain of Lakes. Crooked Lake and Blind Lake Rustic offer vault toilets, hand-pump water, and fire rings only. Hell Creek Ranch adds full hookups (water/electric/sewer), a swimming pool, and clean showers. Pro tip: the Bruin Lake dump station is the most convenient empty-and-fill stop in the area before you return your rental, build in 20 minutes for it on departure day.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/pinckneyWhat's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Pinckney?
You'll be surprised how livable a modern RV is, even on a budget motorhome rental Pinckney booking. Expect a queen or king bed, dinette and/or sofa that convert to additional sleeping (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, outdoor awning with lights, and a generator for off-grid nights at Crooked Lake Rustic. Wi-Fi is usually BYO hotspot (cell coverage in Pinckney Recreation Area is patchy). Pro tip: filter by Sleeps and RV Type on RVezy to match your group exactly.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about when I rent an RV in Pinckney?
Hosts in the Pinckney area get creative with add-ons that make your trip easier. Common options include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator use ($5 to $15 per hour), bike racks, kayak racks, and propane top-offs. Standard pickup is at the host's home, typically within 15 miles of downtown Pinckney, and most hosts offer a 3 PM pickup / 11 AM return window that lines up neatly with Bruin Lake's 3 PM check-in. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing. Pro tip: ask about a Festival-Friendly listing if you're heading to Faster Horses near Brooklyn, an hour southwest, where festival approval is required.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/pinckneyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward. You pay securely through RVezy when you book (never directly to the host), and your card is charged for the trip total at confirmation. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup; the amount is set by the host and shown clearly on the listing, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with no new damage, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with the host at pickup and return. It is the easiest way to avoid any back-and-forth on the deposit for your Pinckney, Michigan RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I do a winter RV trip in Pinckney?
Yes, winter camping is genuinely a thing in Pinckney, and it's a quiet, magical way to experience the Potawatomi Trail under snow. Bruin Lake Modern Campground stays open year-round with electric hookups, though water spigots are shut off from late October to mid-April, so you'll fill your RV's fresh tank before arrival. Look for RVezy listings that mention heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and shore-power capability, message the host directly to confirm cold-weather readiness. Winter lows average 15 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, and Pinckney Recreation Area offers groomed cross-country ski and snowmobile trails right out the door. Pro tip: park with the slide-outs facing south, the extra solar gain meaningfully cuts furnace runtime and propane use.
