Camping near Reading, Michigan
Reading is a small village in Hillsdale County in south-central Michigan, close to the Indiana state line and within the broader Irish Hills region. Camping options near Reading sit in the rolling farmland and lake country of Hillsdale County, at roughly 1,100 feet above sea level. The area is a quiet rural base for RV travelers who want lake access, county backroads, and easy driving distance to Ann Arbor, Jackson, and northern Indiana.
Most campgrounds in the surrounding countryside are privately operated, with a mix of full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and lakefront tent areas. Gateway Park Campground, Marble Springs Campground, 6 Lakes Campground, Way Back In Campground, and Sunset Cove Resort are among the closest options and cover a range of styles from full-service RV parks to more rustic lakeside settings.
Public land camping in the wider region is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at state parks, recreation areas, and state forest campgrounds within a short drive. Hillsdale, Jonesville, and Coldwater are the nearest towns for fuel, groceries, and supply runs.
Things to do around Reading
Inland lakes are the main draw. Hillsdale County has roughly 70 lakes, including Baw Beese Lake, an all-sports lake of just over 400 acres with public boat access. Fishing for bluegill, bass, pike, perch, crappie, muskie, and catfish is popular across the small lakes throughout the county.
On land, the paved Baw Beese Trail runs about eight miles from Sandy Beach at Baw Beese Lake in Hillsdale to downtown Jonesville, winding past water features, wooded areas, and neighborhoods. Sandy Beach itself offers swimming, picnic tables, a shelter, and a boat dock. A section of the North Country Trail also crosses Hillsdale County through the Lost Nation State Game Area.
For day trips, Warren Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan sits about two hours west, and the Ann Arbor and Jackson areas are within easy reach to the northeast.

The camping season in southern Michigan runs roughly from mid-spring through mid-fall, and most private parks in Hillsdale County follow that pattern. Typical open dates fall between April or May and mid-October, though exact windows vary by operator and should be confirmed directly with each campground before booking.
July and August are the busiest months, with lakeside sites and holiday weekends booking out first. Late May, June, and September tend to offer easier availability, cooler nights, and fewer bugs. Fall color in the Irish Hills usually peaks in mid-October.
Winter camping is limited. Most private campgrounds close by late October or early November, and Michigan state forest campgrounds in the region shift to first-come, first-served or closed status. Southern Michigan sees strong seasonal swings, with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters, so RV travelers planning a shoulder-season trip should confirm each park's exact open and close dates and check whether hookups remain active late in the year.
How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds near Reading, including Gateway Park Campground, Marble Springs Campground, 6 Lakes Campground, Way Back In Campground, and Sunset Cove Resort, typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and lakefront sites go first, so booking several weeks or months ahead is recommended for July and August.
For Michigan state parks, recreation areas, and state forest campgrounds in the wider region, reservations run through the MiDNR Reservations system. Camping, lodging, and harbor reservations can be booked up to six months in advance, while shelters and pavilions can be booked up to a year ahead. Most state forest campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, and DNR-managed boating access sites, so add it at the time of booking or vehicle registration.
What to expect on the ground
Roads around Reading are rural and RV-friendly. Two-lane routes like M-99, M-34, and US-12 have light traffic, low speeds, and plenty of straight, flat stretches, which suit first-time RV renters. Fuel, groceries, and dump stations are easiest to find in Hillsdale, Coldwater, and Jonesville.
Sites vary widely in size and levelness. Some pads are grass or gravel and can hold water after rain, so leveling blocks and a small tarp are worth packing. Cell service is generally usable on major carriers along US-12 and near Hillsdale, though it thins out on back roads and around the smaller lakes.
Most private campgrounds in the area welcome leashed pets and sell firewood on site. Buying wood locally matters: Michigan asks campers not to move firewood between regions to limit the spread of invasive insects.
