Campgrounds and RV parks near Rose City, MI

Water is the main draw. The Rifle River is a gentle waterway well suited to tubing, canoeing, and kayaking, with liveries operating in the warmer months. Inside the Rifle River Recreation Area, lakes such as Devoe and Grousehaven offer fishing for panfish, bass, pike, and stocked trout, and all lakes and waterways inside the park are no-wake, which keeps paddling calm. On land, families can hike the park's multiuse trails, cross the swinging suspension bridge across the Rifle River and climb the observation tower along Ridge Road overlooking many of the park's features. A 3-D archery range with 10 different targets is open April through October for a small fee. Off-park attractions include the Ogemaw Hills Pathway trail system, ORV routes in the Huron National Forest, and the Ogemaw County Fair in West Branch each August.

Summer is peak season. June through August brings warm days, comfortable humidity, and the busiest weekends at both state and private campgrounds. Canoe, kayak, and tubing rentals on the Rifle River generally run Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the Ogemaw County Fair draws thousands of visitors every August to the fairgrounds in West Branch. Holiday weekends and fair week fill fastest, so early booking is important. Spring and fall are quieter shoulder seasons. Wildflowers and returning waterfowl arrive as ice leaves the lakes, and September and October deliver strong hardwood color through the Huron-Manistee National Forest. Nights turn cold quickly after Labor Day, and some private resorts wind down amenities like pools and canoe liveries at that point. Winter is severely cold. Winters can be severely cold, with over 165 days below freezing on average in a given year around West Branch. Snow typically covers the ground from late November into April. Rifle River Recreation Area remains open year-round for activities like ice fishing and snowshoeing, but many private campgrounds close and services are limited.

Sites in the area vary from full-hookup RV pads at private resorts to rustic state and national forest sites with vault toilets and hand-pumped water. Rifle River State Recreation Area offers 75 modern sites at Grousehaven Modern Campground with electricity, an accessible toilet and shower building, and a designated swim beach, plus three rustic campgrounds with a total of 99 rustic campsites. The Ogemaw County Fairgrounds camping area features 80 wooded sites with water and electric 30/50 amp hookups, more than 100 wooded rustic sites, and 20 wooded group camping areas with electricity. At Michigan state park campsites, check-in starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Campfires are permitted only in designated rings. Michigan restricts moving firewood between areas because of invasive pests, so plan to buy certified heat-treated firewood locally. Cell coverage is spotty in wooded and low-lying areas. Bring bug spray in early summer and layered clothing year-round, as nights cool sharply even in July.
